The only song that I really dislike -maybe the worst for me in all of DT's catalog- is Just Let Me Breathe   :P

Agree, Bups, it also leaves me cold  :(

However, the following song, Anna Lee, is wonderful, and both Jamie and Petrucci are sublime.

So, I conclude at this point that FII has some 3-4 poor songs, and unfortunately the albums starts with two of'm, but most of FII is vintage DT  *horns*

NP: Martin Orford - Classical Music and Popular Songs

His first solo.  Despite the somewhat off-putting title, thus far it seems similar in style and quality to the The Old Road, perhaps a bit heavier on extended keyboard solos (but if you buy something by a noted keyboardist, I'd think this wouldn't be a shock).  Nay for the Amazon $1 off a download if you've bought something else promo apparently only applying once, not that I needed the dollar off to buy this one, but as Lord Jönes will confirm, cheaper is better, especially when you're expecting it.  By the way, MO's equivalent to ashes and trains would appear to be roads.

After listening all the way through once, I report the following: It has more of an instrumental focus than The Old Road  (some songs are completely instrumental).  It's perhaps a bit lighter than TOR; vocals when there are some are similar (Wetton appears again).  Obviously prog house rules require multiple listens, but my first impression is: pretty and pleasant but probably not five stars.

To further muddy the water, the 'road' on the cover of 'The Old Road' is actually the trackbed of an abandoned railway, or railroad in CookieSpeak ;)

NP  DT:  Falling Into Infinity  (on repeat)

Actually, I'd now say that FII turns out to be a very fine album if one has the patience to get properly into it - as Jonesy also commented earlier. Yesterday I ended up playing it the whole day, some four times thru (with the necessary repeats).

The main problem imo is that the first two tracks are poor. In fact, I find New Millenium a lousy track - don't understand why they included it, and particularly why they chose it as first track. I'l probably skip it in the future.

Once you get past these two tracks, the album gets better and better. Track three, Peruvian Skies, is a Petrucci classic, and Hollow Years a Portnoy classic. Then comes Burning My Soul, which I find boring. The rest of the album is pure bliss.

And Master Petrucci has done some of his finest stuff on FII.

Guess I have to make the same effort with Scenes .....  :)
Falling Into Infinity is quite a fine album indeed. I'm ok with the first two tracks and rather like You Not Me actually, prefer it over, say, I Walk Beside You on Octavarium. Burning My Soul and Just Let Me Breathe put me off as well.
And yes, you really should make an effort with Scenes, Nicky, it's worthwhile and I don't really understand why it hasn't clicked with you yet!

However, Erik, I can't share your enthusiasm for H-Marillion. I'd say their music is too laid back for me. DT are far more hard-driving - I need that.
Fair enough, everybody his/her own cup of tea (or coffee)  ;)

Like it as well, altough it's a bit uneven [the album]. It would have been a better album if Hope For The Future and An Accidental Man would have been left off. Hope For The Future should just never have been recorded/released (even the band themselves think so). An Accidental Man is a great track but seems out of place here (and is indeed from the AOS sessions). I think it would have fitted better on Marillion.com. Without those two tracks wwe would've had a set of shorter, more acoustic based songs and one big epic (would also have made it an perfect Vinyl set up actually!).

I am listening to Octavarium right now and I really enjoy I Walk Beside You. It's the best song U2 has made those last twenty years  ;) Seriously, what I also really appreciate on Octavarium is that the first six songs are short and tight with no excessive noodling. I like them all (well, I don't care much for TALW), especially Never Enough ... the best song Muse has ever made  ;D

QuoteAnd yes, you really should make an effort with Scenes, Nicky, it's worthwhile and I don't really understand why it hasn't clicked with you yet!

Although I was thrilled at first listens, Scenes ... is the DT album that I play the less (WDADU excepted) since I think it showcases all DT's excesses and flaws. It's also the only studio album where I struggle with James' voice. Cut a good quarter of hour off (mainly on Beyond This Life, Home and Finally Free) and tune James down a bit (like they did on BC&SL) and I guess things would be different for me. But I know I am clearly in the minority here. I still find that Through Her Eyes is DT's most moving ballad, though  :'(

QuoteHope For The Future should just never have been recorded/released (even the band themselves think so).

Sometimes I prefer not to know what a band thinks of his own songs. For example, I read some harsh words from Steve H on No One Can. Still, I find it to be a great poppy tune with lyrics that really move me :

The days before you came
Were really all the same
A greyness I used to call freedom
Endless nights out with the boys
The boasting and the noise
To think that I ever believed them

Well, let's see  ;)

Guess one reason is that the DT-albums require so much effort of the listener ( ;) Greenie ). Once I had gotten properly into Six Degrees and the following DT-albums, I felt that I oughtta devote some time to other groups too  ;D

Earlier:  Chris Cornell:  Euphoria Morning

One of my gems, maybe not a repeat-album (like FII), but very enjoyable every so often  :)

NP  DT:  Falling Into Infinity  (on repeat)

A week ago, I would have sworn that this was DT's lapse album. Now it's become a drug, better than s! ... well, maybe not quite, but close up  ::) ;D

Greenie, have you considered whether you might be an idiot  :o

Maybe your ex is right about that  ;D

I mean, you live nextdoor to what is arguably this planet's best rock group, and you don't even know whether you like'm  ::)

Otoh I don't know whether Manatees can be idiots. It's a step further from having a *  ;D
