Well, let's see  ;)

Guess one reason is that the DT-albums require so much effort of the listener ( ;) Greenie ).

Sort of like it requires a lot of effort to sit still at the dentist.

Quote
Greenie, have you considered whether you might be an idiot  :o

Maybe your ex is right about that  ;D

Actually, she was convinced I was a flippin' genius.  She just wasn't a very nice person.  I'd prefer one that thinks she's smarter than me but is kind about it.  I, on the other hand, assume I'm an idiot.  Not about this though.   ;)

Quote
I mean, you live nextdoor to what is arguably this planet's best rock group, and you don't even know whether you like'm  ::)

Otoh I don't know whether Manatees can be idiots. It's a step further from having a *  ;D

I do know whether I like them: I don't.  I acknowledge their obvious skills as musicians, and yes, a few songs here and there do sound pretty good to me, but overall, just not my thing.  And it cannot be emphasized enough that they need a better singer.  Also, if you've ever been on the Belt Parkway or the LIE (Long Island Expressway, known to my dear departed dad as "The World's Longest Parking Lot"), you'd understand that you can be very far away from Long Island even if you live 2 miles from it -- and being far away from it is a good thing (not unlike being far away from the aforementioned -ex, who happens to live on LI.  Coincidence?  I think not.).

Manatees are idiots by definition.  Anyone can run into a propeller blade or two, but after five or six times, you've got to figure it would be a good idea to avoid powerboats.

Shhhhhhhh!  The guy thinks he's a sea mammal!  Change the subject for frak's sake! ;D

If you guys are going to be mean about it, I'm just going to get my waterproof iPod and listen to Devin by myself in a nice quiet estuary somewhere.  BTW, manatees are veggies like Nicky, so maybe I'm really a shark.

NP: Devin Townsend Project - Ki

P.S. I own .25 of a Dream Theater album now that I have Transatlantic's SMPT:e.   :P

Really Nicky, I disagree, I actually think it's bullshit. With DT it's actually you like it or you simply don't. I can well understand that. It's not overly complex music or anything (although I guess they want you to think so ::) ). I don't think it requires much effort to 'get' what they mean with their music.
At first, I didn't like Dream Theater (I wasn't into metal back then), but when I began to like metal, I liked Octavarium a lot more. After that, I bought every album and didn't have to do much effort to like them. Actually no effort at all.
Instant liking.

I had to do much more effort for Marillion for example. Each album was very difficult to get into. Each one for different reasons.

So, to Manatee: I can understand you there. You're not an idiot. It's ok if you don't like Dream Theater. ;) We don't have to live up to Nicky's standards, fortunately. :D

You're such a nice boy, Paco.  Maybe I'll hypnotize my friends' daughter into thinking beef is the new tofu and ship her off to Holland for you.

And it's a good thing indeed that we don't have to live up to Nicky's standards as that would require figuring out what they are.   ;D

Now deciding between: Playing the first Orford album again or having a nap.  If I had speakers in the bedroom, I'd do both.

I assume iPods are taking longer to reach the colonies than Ki did? ;D

NP: Dream Theater - BC&SL Instrumental.
Just finishing, so I need to decide what's next.  A bit of Nevermore is a contender...

They're here aplenty.  We're usually at the forefront of unnecessary technology.  I just don't feel the need to own one atm.  If I did nap, I wouldn't do it with something in/on my ears anyway.

I was going to try an MP3 download of the other Pure, but tragically, it's not for sale in that format.  The best price for a new CD of it is currently over $30, so that's a bummer.   :(

You're so naïve, Greenie (hëavily naïve)  ;)

Can't you see that the guy is runnin a conspiracy against me ?  :o

First he refuses blankly to follow any of my suggestions. When that doesnt affect me, he's now on a spree to recruit fellow conspirators against me.

Don't ya either see that when he talks about DT as easy stuff, he doesnt really mean it; no, it's part of his conspiration against me  >:(

As my Dad said long ago, "Beware of youth !" I didnt understand him then, but now I sure do  :o

Hey, Greenie, if I promise not to call you an idiot, will you then be on my side ?  Please :-*

I think you might want to consider the possibility that you're drinking too much coffee.  If you want me to take your side, I suggest picking a topic I'm more amenable to (i.e., something other than Dream Theater).  I have been known to take your recommendations on certain other bands (e.g., Kamelot and Mastodon) to favorable effect.  And since you mention them, I've been meaning to get an introduction to The Mars Volta.  I'm led to believe they're weird (which is certainly not a negative in my book), but otherwise I have no real idea what they're like.  Enlighten me.

P.S. I plan to go to sleep as soon as the pretty girls with the sultry voices finish singing to me, so I may not see said enlightenment for several hours.

I am listening to Octavarium right now and I really enjoy I Walk Beside You. It's the best song U2 has made those last twenty years  ;) Seriously, what I also really appreciate on Octavarium is that the first six songs are short and tight with no excessive noodling. I like them all (well, I don't care much for TALW), especially Never Enough ... the best song Muse has ever made  ;D

Some excellent observations there, Bups. Shows you know quite a lot about rock.

However, you seem to be missing something in the heavier areas. Maybe time has come for venturing there. I'd suggest Nevermore, Tool, Opeth, Circus Maximus, Iced Earth, Down. These are brilliant bands - all in my pantheon  *horns*

And don't let Paxi recruit you  ;D

Enlighten me.

Well, you aint gonna see much a*s and b*s with the MV guys. When they rarely appear (that is, the a*s and b*s), they'r warped to disgust.

First off, the guys have been places that you and I havent even had nightmares about, with drugs and stuff.

That gives'm a good platform for making great music.

A lot of their early stuff is rather grating - let's say rather non-Enya - but with time they'v become more melodic.

Octahedron sounds even beautiful in my ears, however with the great, unique MV edge; you never mistake these guys for AOR.

Yup, sure, why not listen to one of the greatest bands around  ;)
