Me too.  I've been getting the urge to play Mr Tate and his merry minstrels, eventually it dawned on me that it's because some parts of Amaseffer are very Queensrÿche like.

NP  Magnum:  Storyteller

I'm beginning to quite enjoy this album. Thanks for pressing, Deenie  :)  and nice to know that there's some intelligence north of Copenhagen  ::)  ;D

There's something distinctly English about this music, old chaps, which I as a back-up Englishman appreciate. In fact, Magnum are from Birmingham, which is my hometown, if any  :-\

Nicky.

You're a BRUMMIE?!?!!! :D

No, no... be proud, laddie!! I'd love to say I was from the city of Magnum, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest (?)... and who else... SHY!!!!

As a native of those parts myself, I've been fortunate enough to see Magnum a good number of times throughout their career - they always play a blinder  *horns*  But, whilst I accept that 'Storyteller' is a classic album and contains many of Magnum's classic tracks, I find I personally prefer versions to be found elsewhere. The double-live set 'The Last Dance' kicks serious bottom, for example, whilst 'Storyteller' always leaves me vaguely unsatisfied - sonically not musically.  Shades of Purple's Machine Head/Made in Japan here, perhaps?

On another note, Magnum seem to have a lot of war songs, almost one per album.  'Morts' is definitely my favourite, very emotional.  If it catches me in the right mood I can blub like a baby and don't care who knows it!  ;D

Top band.  Made in Birmingham.  *horns*

I could never even begin to imagine what there is not to be satisfied about, but let's leave it at that. If there's anything, I don't wanna know. I love their sound. When you mention "The last dance", I think you should go for "Stronghold". It's the same concert, but with three more tracks, and the mixing is better.

Anyone checked out the 20th anniversary Wings of Heaven live double cd? -I have it, obviously, and it's Magnumificent!!! :D

I've settled down to almost always playing The Last Dance, I don't think Stronghold works as well for me.  To my ears, TLD comes the closest to being there so far.  8)

Indeed it is.  8)  Ignoring the fact that they've now done around 1,067 live CDs ;) and that TLD is still my overall fave *horns* I still rushed home to hear it on release day, as excited as a kid at Christmas.   Top stuff.  *horns*

Top tip:  Any UK-based members wishing to build their Magnum collections should note that 'The Spirit' (another live set!) is currently a mere 2.98 GB pounds at Amazon.co.uk.  Talk about a bargain!  :)

IQ - Subterranea.

When in an IQ mood, I almost always play either 'Seventh House' or 'Dark Matter' because they seem to have some unknown quality that really makes them irresistible for me.  But Subterranea is a hauntingly beautiful album - when I play it I can't think how anything could be better.  8)

I would add City Boy. If you guys aint familiar with this band, then ya got some thrills waitin for ya. Very melodic, nice harmonies, intelligent lyrics, lots'o Brummie humor (that's the sorta city where you learn not to take things tooo seriously - aint that so, Stevie ? ).

A significant improvement over the Manic Bible (and reminds me of my birth)  :D

It does sound like it's not produced, and that's where I get a bit cold. It is very live, but the balance between the five guys is rarely if ever the same on a mixing desk tap as it is in the ears of the attending crowd. That's what I think Stronghold has got. But what is better than to enjoy an album? I'm the loser here.

The Last Dance had me in tears before I even heard it. "Magnum was..." it says in the booklet. I actually cried. Most important band in my life, and I hadn't seen them live, and here was the sonic proof of their last tour.

"The Spirit" is probably the highest quality live recording you'll ever hear from Magnum. It was in their big budget days. It is a tremendous bargain Steve has tipped you about.

Subterranea is magnificent. Coolest album they ever made. I also like 'Seventh house' a lot. 'Dark matter' has yet to grab me. I don't understand why, but it just doesn't.

;D ;D Although I did realise there was a link, it was genuinely what I was listening to - I'm very Osada Vida at the moment.  If I'd have been playing 'Triangle' I don't suppose it would have helped.  ;)

EUROPE - Rock the night DVD

This is a collection of their videos, and a nice thing to have and to watch. To listen, however, is partly horrid, because the sound is warped!! Not much on the other tracks, but the show opener, The final countdown, is ruined for it. How is this possible, in 2004?!! >:(

But the DVD's got great bonus material. News features from Swedish TV that have me in stitches every time. My GOD, that pronounciation of the name JOEY. It's like IIIOOOIIII... Great tour report and great everything. Interviews...

But most important of all: Recordings from the place where it all started to take off: The Swedish "competition" or what to call it, where they won their first record contract. I've got a funny story about that one, but that'll have to wait until my EUROPE album by album review series! ;)

NP Van Der Graaf Generator / Trisector / Interference Patterns

These guys really rock, still!

Before this I played a load of the sound clips on Fish' website, both 13th Star as his back catalogue. Only have Vigil in my collection, next purchase was the then current Suits which I did not like and in the end got rid of, have left Fish aside since. But all this raving about 13th Star has made me curious, I may give Fish a try again.

All three great albums, although my favourite is probably Ever. Dark Matter is a really great album, but it is a bit (too) derivative I think, with all those classic Genesis and Yes references and quotations thrown in. Especially Harvest Of Souls, cool track but it's really Supper's Ready meets Heart Of The Sunrise and some Gates Of Delirium with an IQ twist.
