Probably not. Seems like they're more "something" than "old"  8)

And seems like Styx is a better option if you're looking for old melodic prog. Anybody familiar with Pieces Of Eight or The Grand Illusion ?  I did hear them in those days, but not enough to remember what they sounded like.

Dream Theater - Octavarium
7. Sacrified Sons

I always think of this as the less best of the album.

My Octavarium top 8 (at the moment):

1. Octavarium
2. The Root Of All Evil
3. Never Enough
4. Panic Attack
5. I Walk Beside You
6. The Answer Lies Within
7. Sacrified Sons
8. These Walls

In this list, 1 till 5 are often shifting a lot, but thanks to its lenght the song Octavarium is almost always on top. Numbers 6, 7 and 8 are always at the end, rarely shifting.

What is your Octavarium top 8?

NP  Pearl Jam:  Self-titled

I really like Eddie's singing, but somehow the music isnt quite up there - too Coldplayish.

Queensrÿche are related, but their moods are much more vivid. Guess that's what makes them prog, while PJ arent quite  :-\

And guess that's what makes PJ more popular (read: accessible)  :-X

Hey, you're asking for a lot, Paxi.

If you're so much of a DT fan, how about giving Kamelot a spin ?  They're up there too. And their lyrics are super. And Khan's a better singer.

Since you ask, Paco :

1. Never Enough
2. The Root Of All Evil
3. These Walls
4. I Walk Beside You
5. Octavarium
6. Panic Attack
7. The Answer Lies Within
8. Sacrified Sons

But it's subject to change very often ...

I think it's really a great album with a lot of diversity, beautiful melodies and a brilliant art cover (as always with Hugh Syme). But I don't see Octavarium (the song) as the absolute masterpiece that many describe.

NP Morcheeba - Wonders never cease

PH

Dream Theater - Awake
2. Caught In A Web

James screams very much on this album. I'm not sure whether I like it or not.
The music is good though.

After this one I'm gonna play Falling Into Infinity. But I gotta admit that it's got more to do with duty than beauty...

I wonder why you say that. What's lenght gotta do with a song being good or not? I think it's about quality, not quantity. Not saying it's wrong to have Octavarium at the top though (far from that! ;D) but I just cannot understand why you prefer a song just because it's loooooooooooooooooooong.

But to answer your question regarding a top 8: I like 'em all, however, if I have to choose my top 8 it would look something like this:

1: Octavarium
2: Sacrificed Sons
3: The Root Of All Evil
4: These Walls
5: I Walk Beside You
6: Panic Attack
7: The Answer Lies Within
8: Never Enough

But why don't you like Sacrificed Sons PH and Bupie? I think it's Epic with a capital E!

I agree Tom. Size doesn't matter. And quality always wins from the quantity (science proves it). It's not about how much they put in, but how strong it is that they put in.

Ahem...

Seriously though. I made a mistake, it's not because of its lenght that Octavarium is so good. It's because of its lenght that the song is so varied. And because its so varied, there's so much to like in there. And because there's so much to like in there, it's a good song.

Indirectly lenght brings quality. But this is not always the case indeed. (we should ask women though...)

I am as you, Tom, I like all the songs here, Sacrified Sons included but maybe this is the harvest one to get into and I find that it lacks the energy of some other songs here.
