NP  Royal Hunt:  Collision Course

Wow, what a surprise: melodic, atmospheric, great singing, moderately prog, rocks, even a bit edgy  *horns*

In the Arena, Threshold, Ten range  8)

Here's a Royal Hunt YouTube Mix for you guys:

That's sad  :(

I really like that album  *horns*

Maybe it's a bit too metal for you, Teunis  ???

NP  Royal Hunt:  Collision Course

Man, this stuff is sooo hot  *horns*

André Andersen, who writes all the lyrics and composes the (basics of) the music, is also unabashedly religious, and talks straightforwardly about and even with God, which I like a lot  8)

These guys are heading for my pantheon .....  :)

Give'm a run, guys, I'm sure you'l understand my excitement  ;)

JP  R.E.M.:  Automatic for the People

Maybe not mindblowing, but still very moving  *horns*

Well, it may not have the spectacular musicianship of some prog offerings, but I still find it pretty special.  This is my favorite R.E.M. album from their middle period.  I especially like some of the lesser-known songs toward the end -- as you say, very moving.

Played Yesterday:

Royal Hunt - (Youtube songs linked by Nicky)

I remember these guys from my Pandora days.  To me they're enjoyable, fun music, maybe a little over the top.

NP: Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition

Still absolutely love this band.   *horns*

maybe a little over the top.

Yeah, Greenie, that seems to depend on one's temperament. I'v learned to accept that a lotta music that I listen to is over the top for most other people, even proggies.

I'm new to Royal Hunt and basically only know their ep Intervention and full studio album Collision Course. But these sure have a lot of the stuff I go for in music: passion, drive, melody, wonderful choir harmony, voices coming in and out, great guitar solos, keyboard atmospherics and kicks, evocative religious and spiritual lyrics.

And thus Royal Hunt made it to my prog pantheon  *horns*

Really don't know, all I know there's no click. Maybe too metal and too little prog, but I don't like the vocals either.

NP: Discipline. - Push & Profit

Their first album.  Not as heavy and overall more melodic than the other two.  Very good but a somewhat different animal than their other stuff.  A less challenging listen perhaps, although the lyrics to one song are rather disturbing.

JP: Van der Graaf Generator - H to He Who Am the Only One

Excellent album, maybe a little more accessible than Godbluff.  I continue to notice how this band likely influenced several later bands that I like.  The first song, Killer, is a particular favorite.  It occurs to me that King Crimson fans may also enjoy these guys, although they are certainly different.

JP: Anathema - A Fine Day to Exit

A very strong album from their middle period (not Doom Metal, but not happy happy).  No weak songs IMO.

JP: Gazpacho - March of Ghosts

I'm beginning to get this album a bit more.  It still doesn't engulf me the way Night and Tick Tock do, but perhaps it will get there.  In any case, still enjoyable.

Still on my Royal Hunt trip  :)

Got their studio album Blood Paper. Also amazing  *horns*

Still, there's somethin special about Collision Course - maybe cuz it was my "first love"  :-*

That's also the one that I recommend as a starter to all Roomies. It rocks and challenges as much as Contagion  ;)

From Lords of Metal (Dutch site, Wilco interviewed, André told):

Since I only got the promo-issue of 'Collision Course' and I can't find the lyrics on the Internet yet, can you tell me something about the contents of the lyrics? Where do you get your inspiration from?

For me the essence of paradox [André added "Paradox 2" to Collision Course, nb] is the fact that whatever (unjust or flat out monstrous) acts people were/are "committing" (I'm generalizing here) they're always finding a way to include "God's will" of some sort to justify their actions. It is definitely a paradox that a "Holy Book" (whatever it might be - Bible, Koran, you name it), which is all about "the good" and "divine" and showing "the right and merciful way", written by men and for men, then is historically used by men as an excuse (or a reason in some cases) for a majority of the most horrifying crimes of our time. And yet, any "radical" movement – especially involving some kind of religious flavor – is a blatant display of contradiction in terms... absurd. Too much is just what it is – too much. Christians made their mistakes centuries ago (crusades and any equivalent "missions") and even succeeded to bring some of the same stupidity along into the 20th century (Ireland, while not being of exactly the same kind, but nevertheless). And now, after all these historical de-tours some people from the Middle East are just became deranged enough to re-vitalize this disgracefully aged agenda and introduce the world to the "Islamic topic". So lyrically I went back to the very beginning of the story, but back then (on the first album) the main theme was a description of "what did actually happen": on the new one it will be "why did it all happen and why is it all happening".
You see, that very first rock, which was put down to create a physical frame to our concept of religion, gave birth to a very first conflict which can, simply put, be described as "my God is bigger than your God, ergo, I/we and our way of living are superior compared to yours". And while this problem seems to be diminishing in the West, it became almost "the main issue" in some parts of the East, resulting in a row of horrific conflict situations that we've been witnessing - and still do today - and get affected by.

@ Bupie. Have fun with Toto!! I`ve never seen them live. But Bobby Kimball. That was 1994 when he was promoting his solo album. I remember he played a lot of Toto songs too. And you won't guess who he was supporting... Kansas!!  *horns*
Thanks  ;)

I had fun indeed : it was a great show in a great venue  *horns* Lucky you, I would have loved to see Kansas live.

@ Nicky : about Royal Hunt, I have Paradox. I liked it on first listen though it seemed a bit mellow and too much keyboards-driven. But maybe I was not in the right mood. I'll play it again.

Well then, maybe you should get Collision Course. The first three songs, which I consider the best, will rock your pants off which will thrill your fiancée.

NP  Royal Hunt:  Paper Blood  (on repeat)

Excellent too, but somehow not quite up to the genius of CC. Many fans have criticised the replacement of John West (singer on PB) with Mark Boals (CC). Imo both are great singers, and Mark gives it his all. André says in an interview that he spent more time on CC than on any previous album. Guitarist Marcus Jidell (Swedish) upgraded his playing on CC. I find the lyrics on CC more interesting too  8)
