Echolyn - echolyn

Now on progstreaming.com. Second spin, can't help it, I find it boring ::)

NP: (the same)

My first play, but I think I like it.  Some songs are more immediately catchy than others for certain, but this grabs me more than the small sampling of Echolyn I'd heard before.

You do?  :o :o :o

I find it great!
Definitely better than their previous album The End is Beautiful.
Especially the epic Islands is breathtaking.  *horns* *horns* *horns*

I guess I am going to have to listen to see which camp I am in

Np Sean Filkins - War and Peace etc. which is another of my recent favorite cds

Just played a couple of songs from the above on YouTube.  Must've been in my mind from you having just mentioned it, although I'd forgotten that until I came here to post.

Epitaph for a Mariner is quite a good epic on first listen.  Learn How to Learn seemed ok but didn't immediately grab me.  Worth listening some more certainly.

It is the Prisoner of Conscience Pts1 and 2 that are probably my favorite tracks. So search harder  ;D

NP:  Moon Safari (on YouTube) - "The Other Half of the Sky" from the album Blomljud

This is a 31:45 minute epic (also appears on the live album The Gettysburg Address).  Fantastic, symphonic prog with superb vocal harmonies.  The wrinkle with these guys is they sound so upbeat.  Normally not something I enjoy in music, but I can't help but like this.  I must buy either this (double) album or The Gettysburg Address (also double), which I heard on progstreaming.

By the way, has anyone heard Squackett (the Chris Squire/ Steve Hackett) collaboration?  Could be exciting, but I haven't heard any of it yet.

I find it not very versatile. All of the tracks are too song oriented and lack guitar- and keyboardsolos, I miss the 'fire'. Imho of course ;).

+1. Now there's also a track called 'Madness' from the upcoming album on YouTube. Also very 'different'. Takes many listenings to get used to it.  Their previous album 'The Resistance' was love at first hearing, with these tracks this is not the case  ::).

Today:
Gazpacho - Missa Atropos
Sylvan - Sceneries
'I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh, our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time'

I have it. I think the best way to describe it is melodic and lightweight and more Hackett influenced than Squire.

If you like Steve Hacketts recent cd's then you will probably like this. It is better than Beyond the Shrouded Horizon but not as good as Out of the Tunnel's Mouth imo.

I have only spun it a couple of times though.

Now time for somethin else  ;)

NP  Roger Waters (with Eric Clapton):  The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking

Thru recent years, I have acquired several Roger Waters albums - Pros and Cons (1984), Radio K.A.O.S (1987), Amused to Death (1992), and Ça Ira (2005) - which I have only listened to slightly.

I have now decided that my next musical project is to become familiar with these albums.

His live album In The Flesh – Live (2000) I have listened to a lot  *horns*

Well I've listened to Madness and at the beginning I was very skeptical. But it turns out it is much better than the first seconds make you think it is. Reminds me somewhat of Undisclosed Desires; bold, but efficient in the end. What surprises me is that so far, the tracks are unconnected - Survival, Unsustainable and Madness have very little in common. I feel like the album is going to be inequal and will lack cohesion. But once again, time will tell.

What would be even more interesting is:

Asia - Toto
Toto - Asia

;D

Played:

Roger Waters:  The Pros and Cons

More  ???  than  *horns*

Well, let's not forget that this album is 28 years old. Guess some people my age will like to hear Clapton plinking away to Waters' wailing, but I'd say that this album is somewhat dated  :-\

With Waters it was always very up and down, but credit goes to him for always having been willing to experiment a lot, and he definitely is one of the great genii of rock  *horns*

Roger was the one who gave Floyd its bite. Without him, Floyd would'v gone overboard in spaciness, which they in fact did after Roger left  :-\

Well, needed somethin with some more punch:

NP  Stealing Axion:  Moments

Needs some adaption, but is definitely a grower  *horns*

I agree both Pink Floyd and Roger Waters were better when they were together.  One thing I found about Waters on his own (and for that matter, also Gilmour on his own) was that he was really depressing, even by my standards.  A pity they didn't remain as a unit -- they might have produced a few more albums as brilliant as Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and Animals.

Seems like it's more typical than not for the sum of the parts to be less than the whole when a key member leaves a great band, but I guess that's part of what comes with the evolution of a progressive band -- things change, sometimes not for the better.

Played:  Agents of Mercy - The Black Forest                Still highly recommended.   *horns*
Anathema - A Fine Time to Exit                  Excellent stuff from their prime (IMO) era

NP: Demians - Mute

I've found this one a disappointing follow-up to his superb first album -- giving it another try after some time off.

I think Spock's Beard is a nice exception. I like both Neal Morse's solo material and post-Neal Spocks' material better than Spock's-Neal-Beard material.
Are there any other typical exceptions?

Would be a dream come true, but it's not likely. Asia's album titles usually start with an 'a' and Toto doesn't record studio albums anymore :D.

I only played 'Madness' once and found 'Survival' and 'Unsustainable' no 'wowsers' either at first hearing. But I won't be playing these tracks till I own the whole album. I will definitely buy it. Muse doesn't stick to their old music and is progressive for sure ;).

On progstreaming.com. Is is a collection of instrumental tracks. Although the individual songs are really worth listening, a whole album with instrumentals can't hold my full attention. Hopefully the 'Live In Gettysburg' album from him is more interesting.

I should have known, it's the same album as yesterday, but now live  ::) ;). Many instrumental tracks also, with a few exeptions, sung by his wife Lana Lane. Okay, nice, but I won't run to the record store for these cd's.
