np> Seventh Wonder - [Mercy Falls (2008) #06] A Day Away (3:44)

My absolute favorite these days, absolutely coherent resp. harmonious song. Albeit a little on the short side.
Arriving somewhere, but not here....

Listened to four very special albums:

Pallas:  The Sentinel

During the first run, the first three tracks bored me so much that I gave up. Fortunately I picked up the album again a few days later and started with track 4. Halfway thru this track, I got seriously gripped, and remained so for the rest of the album. Vintage Pallas, already got some of the same wonderful moods as Dreams, and intriguing lyrics   :)

Great album  *horns*

PT:  The Incident

Very special album too. PT are subtle and always take a long time with me; over the many runs, the music and lyrics slowly fall into place and exhilarate.

I'm still wondering what it's about, but the music sure has got me now  *horns*

Alice In Chains:  Black Gives Way to Blue

AIC is more "like it or leave it"  :-\

I loved this album at first run  8)

Alice is back, and with a vengeance !!!  *horns*

Glenn Tipton:  Baptizm of Fire

Most people here will know that Glenn is one of the two guitarists of Judas Priest. However, if you think that this album is about classic metal, then forget it. Already on this album from 1997 you can hear that Glenn was moving far beyond that  8)

I guess one can say that on Baptizm he lays forth some of the highly exploratory tracks that 11 years later would flow into Nostradamus, imo the most exciting rock album of our times.

Baptizm is a demanding and transforming album  *horns*

I think it started off after SW got stuck in a traffic jam on the M1 at junction 8.

Yes indeed but also because of the reason for that traffic jam.

There was an 'incident'.  ;)
And the incident was a car crash.

Quote from: Wikipedia"There was a sign saying 'POLICE – INCIDENT' and everyone was slowing down to rubberneck to see what had happened... Afterwards, it struck me that 'incident' is a very detached word for something so destructive and traumatic for the people involved. And then I had the sensation that the spirit of someone that had died in the accident entered into my car and was sitting next to me.

"The irony of such a cold expression for such seismic events appealed to me, and I began to pick out other 'incidents' reported in the media and news," continues Wilson. "I wrote about the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbours, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage."

Beyond Fear:  Self-titled

First run. Pretty heavy. Tim Ripper's group, where he at last has the opportunity to write the songs. A bit Priest, a bit Iced Earth, and very much Ripper. I guess Demolition would be the precursor  ;)

Thanx for the Incident info, Mad. Was very helpful  :)

NP  Judas Priest:  Close To You  (on Demolition, on repeat)

This song always gives me shivers and makes me cry - man, it's so touching  :'(

Ripper sings sooooo wonderfully on this one. He might not have been the Real McPriest, but Demolition sure is a gem in my cd-collection  *horns*

Funkster, I'm sure you'l like this album  ;)

"And as I stand here by the grave
And the wind calls out your name
I know that time could never heal
The emptiness I feel"

NP  Priest:  Devil Digger  (on Demolition, on repeat)

The follow-up song to Close To You.

Completely different, a real Priest rocker  *horns*

"I was crosswired underground
Nothing seemed to fit
I was fried and memory bound
Then it came to me

See him coming
He has no face
You must stop running
You must have faith

Haha, those lyrics.  :D
I've always considered the lyrics of Priest a bit cheesy. Kinda stereotype to this side of metal.
Just like Saxon by the way. There is no profundity in the lyrics, just standard 'heavy-metal-is-the-law' kind of words.
Strangely enough unlike Saxon, Priest always got away with it.

NP> Votum ~ Metafiction : Falling Dream [9:03]

Have you listened to this one yet, Tom?
I seem to remember that it was you who introduced this Polish band in the Room.
I really like Time Must Have A Stop but this album is really a step forward.  :)

"I was crosswired underground, nothing seemed to fit" is actually quite original, Mad  ;)

And the lyrics of Close To You express some very deep, genuine feelings  :-* :'(

And if you'd make an effort to get into the lyrics of Nostradamus, you'd see that they are very unusual for rock lyrics, more in the vein of medieval mystery dramas  8)

On a deeper level. Priest cannot be compared with Saxon, Motorhead and Maiden. Priest have always had this progressive drive that made them seek within all human spheres and push the frontiers of rock in many different directions.

Of course, on a superficial level, Priest, Saxon, Motorhead and Maiden are all noise  ;D

I'm actually just making my own compilation of Priest tracks for Ms 007 and friends with my choice of gems back to Blood Red Skies  8)

That one, sure but what I meant was that the average lyrics of Priest is a bit standard. Twelve in a dozen as we'd say in the flatlands. ;)

Beg to diver on this matter because if you look to the lyrics of for instance Rhapsody, then you might find that there isn't really much difference there.
Bands like Rhapsody or Labyrinth often write about these kind of things. True also dungeons and dragons, just like Ronny J. Dio (come to think of it, the lyrics of Priest on Nostradamus might be compared with lots of things Dio have written in the past) but they do look similar.

Hmm, not sure about that either (sorry, but I still like you Nick ;)).
You're definitely right about Motorhead although lyirc-wise 1916 was quite not-Motorhead-ish but again, there isn't really a huge difference between the lyrics writing-wise between Saxon and Priest. Saxon is all about strong arm of the law and basic stuff like that and although the lyrics of Priest tend to be a bit evil-ish they are a bit standard in the way I described earlier. Maiden is of course all about hell and damnation but I must say that overall the lyrics of Maiden are better than Priest's and Saxon', especially the Harris-lyrics.

Yeah, if we're talkin about Priest stuff from before 1997. With Baptizm Of Fire and Jugulator, both from 1997, Glenn seems to have decided to dig deeper, and in my appraisal he started taking Priest off into quite new directions.

I think you have to consider that Nostradamus is a very Christian album. To my mind the Nostra lyrics and music reflect a deep mystic sensibility, at this point probably residing in both Glenn, Rob and K.K.

I havent found any of this in Saxon, Rhapsody or Dio  :-\

Not that I'v busied myself much with these groups. But I have the impression that they'r more concerned with fantasy stuff. But OK, if you or any other Roomies find anything that you consider comparable with Nostra, I'd certainly be interested in hearing about it  ;)

A lighter alternative after all this metal noise  ;D ... Speaking of metal and related to Maiden, I read a bunch of rave reviews about Blaze Bailey's last solo album. Has anybodyalready listened to it ?

Edit : Nicky, do you know that the new Dillinger Escape Plan LP is out tomorrow and already listenable on their myspace ?
