These are some of the most challenging groups I'v found in progworld. The more it sounds like noise to other people, the more it gets me rockin.

That's sort of what I was getting at.  Challenging groups are often hard to appreciate on first listen, and if you throw talking with friends and drinking into the mix, there's a good chance most of them won't really see what you're getting at, although perhaps some will be intrigued enough to try another listen.

l'v reached the point where I slumber away to most of the stuff in the Room (particularly groups like H-Marillion and Flower Kings)

I'm somewhere in between.  I'm always looking for new ideas, so I do find prog metal (which is still fairly new to me as a genre, let alone the individual bands) of interest.  On the other hand, my heart probably still belongs to things more along the lines of Genesis, and I missed so many good non-metal prog bands in the past 10-15 years, that I'm still playing catch-up in that area as well.  Good news for me mostly since it means I have lots of good stuff still to discover.

I  have come to the point where I can tell that I think that I like your humour  ;D

You mean you don't take everything I say deadly seriously?   ???
Thank you, though.  I like to laugh when I'm not being very serious.

One of my favourites is Space Revolver.

Thanks for the rec, Iggy.  I take it you feel that one is fairly "direct" by FK standards?

And no, apparently I don't sleep much ever anymore.  For some reason I feel pretty good anyway, although I shouldn't.

NP: Transatlantic - SMPT:e

BTW, anyone have a particular Spock's Beard album to recommend?  I've heard one incredible song from Snow, which I love (Long Time Suffering), but I've only heard bits and pieces otherwise.

That's another "which Marillion" kinda question, to which I'll inevitably respond "get 'em all"  ;D  As you like one off Snow, why not start with that one?  It's pretty awesome.  Or Octane, or...

Would you like noodles with that? ;)

Donno what you mean, Bups  :-\

SyX's "V: The New Mythology Suite" is one of the most challenging set of lyrics I'v ever encountered. They mesh in Dies Irae, the dawn of mankind, the Atlantis myth, Ancient Egypt, Apocalypse; and even when you'r finished looking up their sources and figuring how they fit together, you'r still left wondering .....  ??? 8)

Music for the feeling and thinking wo/man  *horns*

Ok, Nicky, I don't share your opinion but I do respect it and I am glad for you if you find some food for thought in SX's lyrics.

Well, since you like Marillion without restriction, Dream Theater without vocals and flowers without noodles, I guess the best recommandation for a future purchase would be the next Transatlantic album  :)

But maybe I didn't exactly answer your question ?  ;D

I might just do that, although I think your Marillion picks have been pretty solid so far (ok, it IS possible they're just all good).

You're joking right?

Never heard any track of Spock's Beard? No Morse-era and no D'virgilio-era?

Well, lets keep it with 'never to old to learn' then.  ;)

From the Morse-era definitely:

  • The Light (one of the albums in history that defines Prog.)
  • The Kindness Of Strangers (you should really hear Flow for it holds one of the best solo's ever recorded!  8))
  • V
  • Snow (beyond doubt: a daimond)

From the D'virgilio-era:

  • Octane (since it has A Flash Before My Eyes upon it)
  • album no. 9, simply called, how original: Spock's Beard

Mad is abolutely right, do check out Spock's Beard. He omitted the excellent and my personal favourite Beware Of Darkness, though, with the great track The Doorway.

My mistake, I thought you were referring to The Count of Tuscany.  Isn't that the last one?  I'm probably confused.  As you'll recall, I'm an ignorant heathen about all things Dream Theater.   :-[

To clear the confusion, I think they're referring to the new Wither EP, not the album..

Couldn't agree more. Both era's are great but quite different.

I started of with V and ended up buying the rest very quickly. The one I play the least is Feel Euphoria and yet it has the beautiful Ghosts of Autumn on.

On Don't Try This At Home DVD they play an extended version of The Doorway. Both hilarious and great.  *horns*

I've got the same problem with Feel Euphoria.
It isn't a bad album though they've should have deleted the title track and the 'epic' A Guy Named Syd, but you're right: Ghosts Of Autumn is breathtaking.  8)

I'm not joking, but I didn't say I'd *never* heard Spock's Beard.  I've just only heard the one song often enough to form an impression.  I heard a few songs from the later era once or twice each but not enough to really get a good sense of if I'd get into it or not.  Thanks for the rec again.  Maybe I will go for Snow since I know there's one song at least that I'll love on it.
