NP  Kamelot:  Several albums

I'm doin Kamelot intensely atm  *horns*

Invited four friends for a prog evening tomorrow. They'r music lovers, but within other genres: blues, classical music, classic rock.

Additionally they'r interested in philosophy and theosophy. As I mentioned earlier, I'm trying to build a bridge between philosophy/theosophy and prog.

So I did a lot of thinkin about which music to play for'm, and I ended up with five groups:  Dream Theater, Symphony X, Kamelot, Nevermore, and Jeff Loomis (my friend Claus is a guitar enthusiast, he owns twenty guitars himself). These groups are strong in both lyrics and music (Loomis with music alone). In fact, they'r among my absolute faves. So I expect that my guests will be impressed.

I'm makin an Indian curry (I'm strong in the Indian cuisine, quite natural for veggies), and they'r bringin drinks. If I know'm well, nobody's gonna be walking straight home / to bed.

Gotta do somethin to keep the germs away  ;D

Nicky.

I killed a buncha germs over the weekend.  My buddy had his annual Oktoberfest party.  I managed not to be dumb enough to let his wife force tequila on me after I'd had several beers already (she does that), so I survived, more or less.  To any unaware: if you're going to drink tequila, start with it and end with it.  Anything else, and you'll be an unhappy puppy, although chances are good you'll have a good story to tell (or be told).   ;D

I don't have too many promising targets for spreading prog to.  I'm trying with my brother (who already likes some of it) -- he used to be heavily into King Crimson, Fripp, and Eno among others, so he's definitely not a Top 40 guy.  I'm still wounded by his comment that IQ sounded like Triumph though.  :-\   Might try my friend Dave out on Pepper's Ghost.  I think he could get it.

I don't know all of the artists you mentioned well (although of course I do some of them), but it strikes me that they might be a bit on the "grower/needs time to sink in" side of things, so don't be too discouraged if they don't all swoon right away.  I'm a bit of a blues hound myself.  If I think of any bluesy prog to suggest, I'll let you know.

Intriguing.  Does he noodle less on this one than on the FK albums?  I've been meaning to pick up some Pallas too.  Heard some of For the Greater Glory and liked what I heard.

NP: The get a little exercise by walking to buy a large coffee game.
When I get back: Marillion - Marbles

I'm making some headway with the Happiness albums, but Marbles has definitely gotten under my skin.   *horns*

He and/or his band are among the foremost practitioners of noodling in prog.  It's what keeps me from buying all of their albums because they certainly have the right idea aside from that.  Along with DrTh, they are the prog band I most *want* to like but can't quite due to too much noodle, not enough soup.   ::)    Assuming you know what I mean even if you don't agree with it, if you care to recommend an album of theirs that's, as I think I put it before, more "direct" than the norm for them, I'm game to take a UK punt on it because I do like their general sound and respect their talent.

NP: The promised coffee-enhanced Marbles.   ;D

No, I don't know what you mean, there's no noodle there to my ears.  Given that our tastes are so radically different in this case, I'd don't think a recommendation from me has any real merit.  Except perhaps "avoid TFK" :D

Okay, fair enough.  Perhaps someone else who notices some noodle factor there can suggest one where there's less of it.

The guide vocals of Mike in the Best Of Times?

I can understand that it's a personal track and it's also the last track he let his father listen to but besides all the aching of Mike, man can only agree on one thing: He's not a good singer. Better yet, he will never be.  :-\

But still i'm sorry for his loss.  :(

My mistake, I thought you were referring to The Count of Tuscany.  Isn't that the last one?  I'm probably confused.  As you'll recall, I'm an ignorant heathen about all things Dream Theater.   :-[

Mad and I were talking about the Wither-EP Dream Theater released digitally a few weeks ago. The tracklisting is as follows:

1: Wither (Album Version) 5:25
2: Wither (Piano Version) 5:07
3: Wither (John Petrucci Vocal Demo) 5:24
4: The Best of Times (Mike Portnoy Vocal Demo) 13:04

Track 1 taken from the album Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Track 2-4 previously unreleased.

I hope that de-confuses you... ;)

One of my favourites is Space Revolver.

NP Talk - Yes

Not really a Yes CD (imo)  I consider this era to be Trevor Rabin with a backing band which is full of talented musicians.

It is however a superb album.  *horns* *horns* *horns*

Please, Nick (and other SX fans), don't take it badly, but IMHO trying to have a philosophical discussion about SX lyrics is like, well, forget it :-\

I don't know all of the artists you mentioned well

These are some of the most challenging groups I'v found in progworld. The more it sounds like noise to other people, the more it gets me rockin.

I'v reached the point where I slumber away to most of the stuff in the Room (particularly groups like H-Marillion and Flower Kings), but DT, SyX, Kamelot, Nevermore and Loomis always call me to attention - musically and intellectually  *horns* *horns* *horns*

Donno what you mean, Bups  :-\

SyX's "V: The New Mythology Suite" is one of the most challenging set of lyrics I'v ever encountered. They mesh in Dies Irae, the dawn of mankind, the Atlantis myth, Ancient Egypt, Apocalypse; and even when you'r finished looking up their sources and figuring how they fit together, you'r still left wondering .....  ??? 8)
