Just: Marillion - Season's End
Now: Genesis - Trespass

I think I'll join you with Trespass.  I like that album more every time I play it.  It's Genesis, but it's got those Anthony Phillips touches in there that makes it a little different and interesting in comparison to the next several albums (all of which are great).

Re: Marillion   They've got me.  What would you recommend for my next purchase from Rackett (unless it's one that doesn't have an enhanced Rackett version in which case I can probably get a better price on Amazon marketplace)?

This is really growing on me especially the first and last tracks.

Another band that I still have to discover !

What albums are lacking in your collection ? Do you have Seasons End and Holidays In Eden ? If not, go for the double cd remastered versions  8) They sell pretty low on the web (at least on Amazon France)

Me too on Phideaux.  It sounds interesting, but I've only heard small bits and pieces so far.

I'm lacking almost the entire Marillion collection.  I have the first three (with Fish) albums on vinyl, and I have Afraid of Sunlight and Marbles on CD (as well as the free "Crash Course" download which duplicates a few of the songs on those other two).  I've heard some people are big on Brave.  It may well be a great album, but I've heard one song from it several times and frankly dislike it, so I'm inclined to try something else.  I know Steve is keen on the newest pair of albums.

There's the Rub, as Wishbone Ash would tell you.  It's all down to personal opinion because (in my opinion!) every H era studio outing is absolute top quality.  There are no albums where they go disco or otherwise jump sharks or even Manatees.  It took me some years before Brave finally clicked for me but now I'd be inclined to suggest it's one of my top 3.  As you've spotted, I'm rather partial to the Happiness double CD and would obviously suggest that as a good next step.  I'd say it's just a matter of picking your next one(s) and getting stuck in.  From memory, there wasn't a single Marillion studio album that clicked with me straight away, some investment in time was always required.

Just: King Crimson - Cirkus/Neon Heat Disease
Now: Afforested - Wolf's Heads And Woodlanders E.P.

The latter is folk rock (a bit prog-ish) that should go down well with anyone with a fondness for Tull circa 'Songs from the Wood' or even Blackmore's Night.  A free download can be had from http://afforested.bandcamp.com/album/wolfs-heads-and-woodlanders-e-p in a variety of formats including Apple lossless - makes a pleasing change from sh1tty low bitrate stuff 8)

I just gave Afforested a try.  It's nice.  I agree it has a Songs from the Wood feel to it, although it's mostly instrumental and definitely uses more synths/keys than Tull did in that period (or ever as far as I know).

Marillion question: Are there any additional tracks on certain versions of the Happiness is the Road albums?   I found Rackett a bit confusing on this, although the answer appears to be no.  If this is the case, my best value would be getting the two individual albums from Amazon Marketplace (the current low prices are from an outfit I've bought from before with no problems).  On the other hand, I certainly wouldn't want to miss an Ocean Cloud if Rackett has an exclusive version with extra tracks.  As best as I can tell their "campaign edition" is the same music with enhanced packaging.  Is that accurate?

Sincerely,

Pandora played "Paper Lies" a lot.  I found it lacking in subtlety.  It's possible I've heard something else from the album, but that's the only one I recall.   I rather liked "The Uninvited Guest," also a Pandora staple, but I think that's on another album.  For now I think I'll buy the two Happinesses, domestically since Steve Hogarth-Jones has confirmed that there are no extra tracks to be had directly from Rackett.   ;D

That would be Season's End that has the Uninvited Guest on.

Your other option is to work through the albums chronologically which is what I often do with bands that are new to me.

The first albums are often weaker than later albums so it avoids dissappointment later. Although in Marillion's case this doesn't hold true.

I did Arena in reverse order, largely cause I got Pepper's Ghost first and because the first couple are bloody hard to find.  I do think the later ones tend to be better, although the Visitor breaks up that pattern in a big way, being a candidate for their best.

Also in R.E.M.'s case, I think the earlier albums tend to be stronger than the later ones, although it's not a straight line progression at all.

Gazpacho's early albums are probably already spoiled for me because it's taken as written that none of the earlier albums come close to Night and Tick Tock, which are the only ones I've got.

JP: The Count of Tuscany a whole buncha times.  I may not really figure out if I like the album until I get tired of playing that one song.   ;D
