Tom and Mad, definitely an album for you.

Difficult to compare, but Yngwie, SyX, Zero Hour come to mind.

Thanks Nicky, I'll do some research when I get home this afternoon!

So far so good, although I wouldn't compare them with SyX...

Tom

EDIT: Now on is the song 'God Of Oblique'. Here I can spot a lot more SyX-references, especially in the vocal department! I like!!!! *horns*

Angular Perceptions is an album about which one can say without a twinge:  This is a masterpiece !

I'm beginning to get into the lyrics. They're masterly too. Written by Michael Harris.

Tom, this is a must.

Steve, what do you say ?

NP  Magnum:  Les Mort Dansant  (on Storyteller)  (on repeat)

Yes, this is a classic, a very special song (not because the title is in French, Bups), a profound reflection about war, really makes you wonder ......

OK, Deenie, I'm getting into Magnum now  *horns*

Definitely a must from where I'm sitting.  I'd rate it up there with Riverside/Sieges Even/Sylvan/Beardfish as Best of (New) Breed.  Some great sounding bass-work on there, too.

NP: O.S.I. - Office of Strategic Influence.  The bonus disc at the moment, the one with the cover of 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'  *horns*

NP  Enchant:  Break

I have their latest four albums. Ted's fine singing on Angular Perceptions inspired me to give Enchant some spins, so the next few days ....

I had problems with their latest Tug Of War (2003) - it lacked melody, and sounded a bit too much like some Blood, Sweat and Tears kinda smooth jazzy thingy - and now I read in some Amazon reviews by long-term Enchant fans that it had been rushed, and that Enchant had lost some inspiration lately, so I'v started this time with Break (1998). It does grip me, so  :)

Sieges Even and Marillion come to mind, also lyrically (strange, huh?), so we're talkin bout smooth elegant prog with topnotch musicianship and intelligent lyrics - and there's quite some melody and nice atmospheric synths on Break. Maybe Paxi for a change.

Anyone else here into Enchant ?

Beardfish seem to be getting popular in the Room. Can you guys give us a characterisation ?

Not me. Not right now.

Still trying to decide what my thoughts are when it comes to Beardfish.

First reaction: it's strange.

Yes indeed.  But then I was brought up on strange, so I took to it like a duck to things that ducks like.  ;)

Difficult to draw comparisons in that it's not in the easy 'should suit fans of Dream Theater' mould beloved of Amazon reviewers.  A common comparison is Gentle Giant and I can see where folk are coming from, although all my GG stuff is vinyl and I can only just remember when I last played it.  Classic keyboard prog, but a bit zany as in Frank Zappa.  Some quote hints of Genesis, but that's not what first sprang into my mind - even though one track sounds very (I think?) 'For Absent Friends'-like.

I'm currently trying to get to grips with their earlier 'The Sane Day' which hasn't grabbed me in the fairly immediate way that SiT 1&2 did.  It's growing on me, though!  *horns*

Mike Rutherford - Smallcreep's Day.

Not sure why I'm spinning this one so much of late.  It's not the greatest album in the world, but when I'm in the right mood I must admit I do enjoy it.

I own that album too. Indeed, it's a great one. With 'The Smile Has Left Your Eyes' as an absolute highlight *horns*.

Yes, with a great guitar solo that you don't find on the studio version  8) We're talking about Asia Live in Mockba here.

Nicky.

I have their debut, A Blue Print of the World (double CD SE  8)) and their last two, Blink of an Eye and Tug of War and I like them all. Give TOW another try since it's a very good album : the opening, Sinking Sand is a killer with an incredible bass line ! I also have the Live at Last DVD. Great band, their only problem being a lack of diversity in the songwriting : the quality is always here but it's more or less the same pattern throughout an album. But being a SX fan, Nicky, that should not bother you  ;D

NP Dire Straits - Communiqué
     Fish - Return to Childhood
Kansas - Two for the Show

Too bad nobody else is on Kansas here since IMHO they are were by far the best US prog band before Dream Theater came along. But I wo'nt try Ten times  ;D to convince you ...

I saw Kansas live in 2005 at the Arrow Rock Festival in Holland. Up to this day the only song of theirs I know is 'Dust In The Wind' but they were actually quite good. Still, I liked DT better that day (well, not only on that day hehe)... 8)

NP: Fish - 13th Star

I'm in a fishy mood today. ;D

See, Bups, the problem I have with TOW is that it's the first two songs that I find so drab that I lose interest. But I will return to TOW. I just wanna do some of the other Enchant albums first. I remember hearing some good stuff later on on TOW.

I don't agree at all. I find SyX very diverse and exciting all thru, particularly Paradise Lost. They're one of my fave groups.

Wrong: I am, although they're too lite to be one of my fave groups.
