Threshold - Critical Energy.

Blimey, this album is utterly awesome!  Why didn't somebody tell me to buy it 4 years ago?  *horns*

Yeah, Appy. Nobody told me about it before  ;)  Let's spread the (h)appy gospel now  :)

NP   Yes:  Talk  (on repeat)  *horns* *horns* *horns*

A very happy revisit after suuuch a long time. Certainly one of my fave Yes albums, far more enjoyable than Topographic, which I actually find too contrived, yes really, Iggy.

I Am Waiting and Talk are two of the most wonderful songs eva  *horns*

One of the things I really dig about the album Talk is the dynamics. Trevor did something very special here. The difference between loud and quiet, the heavy bass that comes in now and then, the angelic voices that waft in the background.

To me, the Rabin period is one of the best of the many Yes periods (Yes was almost like a railway station), and Talk is the best of the three Rabin albums. After that came the short-lived reformed classic Yes period with Keys To Ascension, and the Sherwood period with the catastrophic Open Your Eyes.

I know that Trevor broke up with Jon & Co. under drastic circumstances. Then he went off to Hollywood to make music scores for a number of B- and C-films, inter alia Armageddon and the two National Treasure films, seemingly to support his growing family. I can't recall whether I'v seen any of these dumbassed movies, in any case there doesnt seem to be much there of the fabulous music that he did with Yes and solo in those halcyon days. I'm actually rather sorry for Trevor. He certainly deserves to go into rock history as one of the great masters.

Iggy, maybe you could add some interesting info about all this.

I have to agree with that.  8)

Hmm i don't know. It's indeed a really good album but personally i prefer Big Generator. Especially Shoot High, Aim Low is marvellous.

Are you sure it was a decision based on money?
I think he did a good job on those movies and i wouldn't consider National Treasure 1+2 and Armageddon as bad movies. I didn't even know he did the soundtrack for Armageddon but that aside.

The split is from what i recall indeed a bit unfriendly.

I agree from the Trevor Rabin period both Big Generator and Talk are better than 90125.

Shoot Hig Aim Low is also one of my favs as are the 2 mentioned by Nicky from Talk.

Trevor Horn was a successful producer in the UK before Yes and I think the vitriol that he had to put up with on the Drama tour freeked him out big time. I have heard that he didn't enjoy playing live. It was always a big ask to follow Jon Anderson who many people consider to be the biggest part of Yes.

I don't agree about the Rabin period being the best but it certainly kept the group alive and kicking. I think the problem was that Trevor wanted to do all the writing on his own.

I do think that Trevor and Jon's voices went beautifully together especially on Talk.

Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte.

It seems so long ago that he let Genesis, I have to remind myself from time-to-time that 'Acolyte' isn't actually a post-Genesis work.

NP   Yes:  Talk   *horns*

Iggy, I didnt write that the Rabin period was the best, I wrote that it was one of the best. As I mentioned earlier, Going and Ladder are my fave Yes albums, so I'm definitely a sucker for the "classic" lineup.

However, I do find that Talk can be spinned a lot. There's loads of great stuff put into it.

I really dig Chris' bass, it's like being punched in the tummy again and again  ;D

One thing I wondered about:  Jon's lyrics are some of the most spiritual you'l find in rock. What are your thoughts about'm ?

Threshold - Critical Mass

Blimey, this album is utterly awesome!  Why didn't somebody tell me to buy it 4 years ago?  *horns*

Agree, it's one of my fave Threshold albums, melodic and varied. After that they became more thrashy and narrow. Dead Reckoning hasnt really clicked with me - but OK, I will give it some more spins, Threshold certainly merit it. Mac doesnt either seem to have been too happy with the develpment, as he ended up leaving.

But guys, let's get some more takes  ;)

I've not heard 'Critical Mass', it's 'Critical Energy' I was playing.  Very strong set, I was especially impressed by the power of the drummer.  On the CD it sounds like he's pounding away at a Peart-size kit, so I was suprised to see the much smaller reality on the DVD!

Good call.  I've been hoovering up the Gillan re-issues, especially at the low prices Amazon are currently doing.  Annoying that 'Clear Air Turbulence' doesn't seem to have made an appearance, but I can always fondle my vinyl.  ;)

Yeah Steve, I actually knew about the Critical Mass / Energy thingy - just forgot, guess it's cause I havent yet heard/seen Energy, but seems like I should soon  :)

How do you guys like Dead Reckoning ?

NP  Yes:  Open Your Eyes

I'm really tryin hard ... hm ... simply can't make sense of it. It doesnt sound Yes to me, except for Jon's voice. I simply don't understand how Jon, Steve, Chris and Alan could go along with this ... but then again, they've been up to a lot of mischief along the line   :D

Depends what you like.  It's a 'jazzier' one, closer to 'Child in Time' than his later Friday Rock Show style.  Personally I love it, hence my general disgruntlement with it's non-appearance.

NP: Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte again.  It seems to be a double-play day, as I had to press repeat on Pat Travers too!  Perhaps I'm having one of those good times I've been hearing about... ;)

Haven't got it. I assume it is a threshold CD

I only have Hypothetical and haven't played that very often.

I think it is time to stop buying CD's for a while and concentrate on my recent purchases.

It's the first one I bought and the one that converted me to liking Threshold.  I've arrived late to the party and I guess this gives me a distorted perspective as my appreciation didn't evolve along with the band.  But I'm making an effort to catch up.  ;D
