Just finished: Eels - Blinking Lights & Other Revelations.  I'm a huge admirer of all E's stuff, but this one is the least appealing to my ears.  I'm in the mood for Eels, though, having read E's book over the last 2 days.  :)

Just started: Def Leppard - Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.  Brain to standby, air guitar to eleven...  *horns*

I've just bought a whole load of Lacuna Coil - HMV have them on "special - < £4 each" - delivered.

Save your money - load of old gonads - VERY Poor Man's Nightwish / Sirenia / gothic stuff / etc.

Tisuue box empty again - but this time from wiping-away tears....  :'(

Probably a higher note, in fact.  Although I think everything I've heard from Sylvan is excellent (definitely a fave band) Presets is about 0.000001% behind the others for me.  Nothing serious, nothing wrong, just I very, very slightly prefer all the rest  8)

NP: Stride - Imagine.  Not played this for ages, just dug it out as Nicky mentioned it.  *horns*

Presets got surprisingly negative reviews by two Amazon reviewers who seem quite knowledgable. They are enthusiastic about Posthumous Silence, Artificial Paradise, and X-Rayed. They find Presets a big disappointment:

Whadaya guys think of that ?

I think the only thing those reviewers are expecting is a Posthumous Silence 2 but Sylvan actually goes on and comes with something completely different. Sure, Presets is far more accessible than PS. So what? Does that mean it is bad?

Abydos -  Little boy's heavy metal shadow opera about the inhabitants of his diary

Still one of the all time CD titles and a brilliant album.

Although I'm always very aware that we all have different tastes, indeed my own change with the weather, sometimes I've gotta wonder if somebody is on the same planet as me.  "It seems like they changed their whole sound" says one Amazon reviewer.  Really?  Sounds like the same band to me, far less variation over albums than the likes of Porcupine Tree or even Dream Theater.  Presets is a tad more laid back than Posthumous Silence, but it's clearly the same band at exactly the same point in their careers.

Personally I prefer X-Rayed and Artificial Silence as, in my opinion, they have a bit more of an edge to the sound.  But I don't prefer them by a large margin.  These days I'm playing more edgey stuff, Dream Theater rather than Genesis, Souljacker Eels rather than Blinking Lights Eels.  But next time I'm in a Marillion Marbles mood, I'm pretty damned sure that Presets will be the Sylvan CD I'm playing.

Me, I don't want every album to sound the same.  I prefer a more varied catalogue into which I can dip as my mood varies and my whims whim.  8)

It still is my favorite Sylvan album, I don't take the reviewers too serious and will always judge for myself  ;).

Simon Says - Paradise Square

Just arrived from ProgFactory in Switzerland after 2 weeks...

Not as tissue-intensive as Tardigrade, but worth every penny...so much Citizen Cain / Cyrus flavour to it, with some great Hackett / Rothery / Camel axe motifs.

Lots of widdley-widdley Moog, and lashings and lashings of Mellontro...not to mention sitar-and-TR808 Beat-box malarkey a la Barbell Is In...

Royal Hunt - Collision Course.

Fairly standard metal fayre, just a little bit to the left of Yngwie.  In theory this is just another album in the collection, nothing special, but I've noticed that I do tend to play it reasonably often.  Quite what that means I have no idea.  ;D

Yes In a word

Yeah, Iggy, these guys are really great. I'v had periods where I ate Yes for breakfast, lunch, supper, and midnight snack - yessiree   *horns*

My alltime Yes favorite is Going For The One, although The Ladder is a close second.

Ms 007 and I saw Jon perform alone - with all his funny gadgetry - in Malmö two years ago. That was sooo wonderful. That guy's a real special person   *horns*

I'm up to wondrous stories having started from the beginning!

Yep JA is very entertaining. We met him at HMV a few years ago (around the Albert Hall dates) and he was happily talking to mrs iggy and promised to give her a wave which he did  ;D.

We were in the second row what a fantastic night.

Worked out the other day that Clive was born on 30th June 1961. I was born exactly one week later what a great week that was  :D
