NP Pink Floyd / The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn [40th anniversary edition promo] / Disc 3 / Arnold Layne

Looks like we have another big Floyd fan here.

I have to have Piper in my CD collection, but I must admit to not listening to it often anymore. Long way from Piper to Dark Side.

It is, isn't it.. You could even say it's a different band. But relistening it now, it strikes me again as a captivating and unique album.

As a further thought, I was wondering whether I should delve into Barrett's solo albums as well (Madcap Laughs, Barrett). From what I read on the internet I gather they're a delicate combination of genius and madness and I wonder if the admiration is more due to the myth surrounding Barrett as a person than the merits of the albums per se. Do you know them and if so what do you think of them?

I bought Falling Into Infinity by Dream Theater today, so I'm giving it the spin.

07. Lines In The Sand

Yeah, it's not as bad as I initially thought. Of course I heard the album already (won't go into detail now), but to have it on disc is giving me the opportunity to listen to it more often and in better sound quality.

Can't say that my eyes are opened though. I consider it inferior to previous and following albums.
But I'm open for it of course!

I second that, Bupie!

And Trial Of Tears is the majestic close of the album, this track alone already makes it worth the price of admission.

Yeah Bupie!
That song is indeed very good!
I didn't know that Dream Theater featured guest singers. Doug Pinnick of King's X sings on that track (making it a bit less interesting to be honest...)

Take Away My Pain is playing now and it starts very nice (reminds me of Genesis).

NP  Syd Barrett: The Madcap Laughs

I'd say that this is an album for the devoted Floyd fan, interesting rather than enjoyable, so it's an album for Erik and Maddox.

Some of the songs are like Barrett's songs on Relics - Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, Bike - and some are more fanciful.

I'v never properly delved into Barrett's lyrics - guess one could get a lot of psychology and metaphysics out of that - think I'd need someone to point out some signs of genius there to get me going on it.

Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters were so kind as to put a lot of energy in the albums The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, as well as Barrett's manager Pete Jenner, and a guy called Malcolm Jones, who I don't know anything about.

But whatever he did seperately, he certainly was an important creative force for Floyd, both actively and passively.

It seems that Korn is reduced to three nowadays. Okay, will try more. But no promises.  ;)

I don't really like Korn...
Their 'popular' provocative language and the lyrics aren't really that smart either (in my opinion).

So, sorry Nicky.
On this level it seems you're more stuck in provocating puberty than I am. ;)

Now playing:
Samples from Ayreon #7 (01011001)
That makes 20 minutes and 18 seconds.

I really like what I hear!

OK, I'll admit that Korn's lyrics are rather shallow. But musically I consider that they're pushing the envelope in a very exciting way. And Jonathan is really upfront with his singing.

In most cases I'm very concerned about the lyrics, like you, Paco. But with Korn and Stone Temple Pilots I'm willing to make an exception, because their music is so fantastic.

Lately I'm actively trying to be consequent in what I think, in my opinions, my mission, my aim and my vision.
Continuity makes for a strong peronality, Nicky.
But I don't reproach you, because of course I fail too. ;)

Now listening to those wonderful guitarsolos by Lori Linstruth, Arjen Lucassen and Michael Romeo!
And we'll have to wait till January 2008 to hear the whole thing!

Ah... one of the few Dream Theater albums I own (apart from "Images and Words", "Awake" and "Metropolis Part 2 - Scenes from a Memory") - and by far the most 'easy listening' they ever were!  ;)

Thanks for that Nicky, confirms that I should at least check out Madcap. Thing is, I'm a completist and once I like something I end up wanting it all, so maybe the best thing for me is to track down the Crazy Diamond box set, after I've sampled some of the material and like it.

Especially remarkable that Gilmour put so much effort into Barrett's solo works, while he was Barrett's successor and not part of the initial band.

Yes, Barrett certainly was an important force for Floyd even after he had left, just listen to certain lyrics on Dark Side Of The Moon and of course Wish You Were Here!

Maybe the way to listen to it is to play just a few songs at a time and then really try to get into Syds world.

> Thing is, I'm a completist and once I like something I end up wanting it all, so maybe the best thing for me is to track down the Crazy Diamond box set, after I've sampled some of the material and like it.

I'm also very much a completist, but maybe not quite as much as you, Erik. With Floyd, I had to get all their official studio albums plus the solo albums. I have some of the concerts on CD, but I dont feel presently that I need more Floyd stuff. There's so much great stuff comin out constantly - DT, SyX, Redemption, excited bout Clive and Co's work toward the new album, and good old Percy has now also made a new album with Alison Krauss, which I'v heard should be fabulous.

> Especially remarkable that Gilmour put so much effort into Barrett's solo works, while he was Barrett's successor and not part of the initial band.

Shows what friendship meant to the band. Syd had reached the stage where things were drifting, so he needed the help of some good old friends.

> Yes, Barrett certainly was an important force for Floyd even after he had left, just listen to certain lyrics on Dark Side Of The Moon and of course Wish You Were Here!

Syd's spirit was there in every note that Floyd played.

But when it turns into impulsive thinking, you should be careful!

Nah, I love you (as a brother).

Quote from: Nicky007 on Wed, 2007-10-24, 10:56:36Who's Lori, and what's this project?
Lori Linstruth is a Swedish female guitar player who was the lead guitarist for Stream Of Passion (that was a project from Arjen "Ayreon" Lucassen, he played the rhythm guitar). I highly recommend Stream Of Passion to all people who like Ayreon and are not afraid for a bit of clever gothic approach.
This mentioned project however, is nothing less than the 7th Ayreon album!!

I was listening to a sample with the three aforementioned guitarists. And it sounds brilliant! Arjen Lucassen's guitarplaying is very much Gilmour-like and first I thought that John Mitchell was playing it (he has some Gilmour-touch too, you know).

At the moment I'm playing nothing yet. Just woke up. (holiday yay!)
