Maybe the way to listen to it is to play just a few songs at a time and then really try to get into Syds world.

> Thing is, I'm a completist and once I like something I end up wanting it all, so maybe the best thing for me is to track down the Crazy Diamond box set, after I've sampled some of the material and like it.

I'm also very much a completist, but maybe not quite as much as you, Erik. With Floyd, I had to get all their official studio albums plus the solo albums. I have some of the concerts on CD, but I dont feel presently that I need more Floyd stuff. There's so much great stuff comin out constantly - DT, SyX, Redemption, excited bout Clive and Co's work toward the new album, and good old Percy has now also made a new album with Alison Krauss, which I'v heard should be fabulous.
Yeah, I know, there's just too much good stuff to explore, both new releases ánd older stuff that was released before my own "release date". ;) As much as I may purchase, my album shopping list never really gets any shorter.

Actually I don't have many of the Floyd solo albums, only Waters' Amused To Death and Gilmour's On An Island. And I have heard Wright's Broken China. Barrett is on the check out list now.

I would say, get Dave's other two solo albums and Rick's too before anything else, Erik. Roger's Ca Ira is also a gem, quite special, as much musical as opera, but far more exciting than the Lloyd Webber stuff (for a proggie).

Any of them as good as Riverside?

Appreciate that you have a girlfriend who's practical - good balance - like with Ms 007 and me. Me and money? Forget it!

I haven't listened to Riverside (yet - that's quite a confession to make here in the room, where there's all this talk about them... I will check them out eventually but have been held back a bit by all the hype surrounding them and the many Porcupine Tree and Anathema references in the reviews, do they add something new?). So I can't say how they compare to Riverside, but I would like to state that Collage, Satellite and Quidam are GREAT! I consider these to be amongst my all-time favourite albums:

Collage - Moonshine
Satellite - A Street Between Sunrise And Sunset
Quidam - Quidam

Collage and Satellite are two sides of the same coin. Great neo-prog with wonderful melodies. Collage's final album Safe is also good, but definitely not the masterpiece that Moonshine is. I don't know their pre-Moonshine work. Still have to get the second Satellite album and the third is soon to be released.

Turquoise (their eponymous debut) is also highly recommended (sort of a Quidam "lite"). Both have great female vocalists and make beautiful melodic neo-prog. Beware though that these bands both sing in Polish (I don't mind but some might) and have had several line up changes and therefore changes in sound as well, so start with their debuts.

Now, if I tell you, Erik, that Riverside remind me mainly of Floyd, although heavier, that might make the difference.

Of course that makes sense, since Porcupine Tree and Anathema also have a fair share of Floyd influences ::) Allrighty, moving Riverside upwards on my must check out list, together with the Floyd solo efforts you mentioned. :P

Riverside is Porcupine Tree meets Opeth. Sort of. To be honest Riverside is (although I can appreciate it) not my cup of tea.

I would say that the second disc of Satellite is much better than their first. "Evening Games" is one of the most melodic neo-prog I've ever heard. Beautiful!
I ordered it, but it's still not here.

Know how to keep a marsh monster occupied for hours? Giv'm a piece of paper on which there's written "Please turn over" on both sides  ;D

Sure you're not confusing Opeth with Pink Floyd, Paco?

Opeth up to and including the grunts? If so I think I'll pass...

Don't know it [the band]. Does it have great hook lines? :P
I have heard of a Dutch band called Peter Pan Speedrock but that's something completely different as te name already suggests ;)

There are some grunts, but that's for about 10%. The most is clean vocals, and these clean vocals sound very much like Mikael Akerfeldt's clean vocals.
In other words, the vocals are good!

It's Satellite but with a harder edge, a bit rockier. It's catchy indeed. You'll like it.

LOL

I have no idea. The drummer with the difficult name has alot of inspiration, so maybe there's more coming out from this brain.

NP: still Threshold's Dead Reckoning
Fighting For Breath

I really love this band. I need some more of their albums. The 2004 album is also great. I think I'll get that next time!

I don't know what Paco is up to here. Opeth and Riverside have about as much in common as Marilyn Manson and James LaBrie (not making any value judgements).

As far as I remember, there aint any growls on the three Riverside albums that I'v heard.

Erik, get Second Life Syndrome, and you'll be hearing a fine second-gen Floyd group, with their own sound.
