Nevermore:  This Godless Endeavor

Guys, this is topnotch prog metal, very dense, very ambitious, intelligent cutting lyrics. It's taken me a lot of spins, but now I'm really beginning to enjoy them.

They're quite different from all groups that'v been mentioned in the Room; Redemption, SyX, and Opeth come to mind (just shows how hard it is to compare here), but Nevermore are more dissonantic, pretty grating stuff. They cover a lot of styles including heavy, thrash, black.

From Wikipedia - Nevermore:  "Nevermore incorporates elements from a variety of genres, which makes it difficult to categorize Nevermore's music. Their sound includes elements of power metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, traditional heavy metal, amongst others. They also have used death metal traits such as low tuned and fast paced riffing, and the 2005 record This Godless Endeavor occasionally featured vocals clearly influenced by death metal. The press have used several other genres to describe Nevermore's sound including groove metal, technical speed metal, technical thrash metal, progressive power/thrash metal, death/thrash metal, and melodic thrash metal. In an interview at Metalmania in 2006 singer Warrel Dane doesn't explicitly disagree with the many genres the band has been put in over the years, but he does however say 'I don't think we're power metal.'"

I agree with Warrel:  There's no showmanship here, only serious musicianship.

Something for Tom, Mad, and Steve, but be patient here.

So, Mad, Phideaux sound like nothing  ;)

DT Octavarian.

I seem to be in a DT minority as my favorite cds are Octavarium and Scenes from a memory.

I saw them last year in Wembley and for me the concert didn't quite work in fact I enjoyed Symphony X more who were supporting them that night.

A couple of years earlier I saw both nights at Hammersmith (which is a much better venue) and they played Dark Side of the Moon on the second night.

They were much better then.

Then I'd like to ask you guys:  Is there anything by Asia that stands out above the standard good quality rock ?

I own all their studio albums (both the 'Wetton' and the 'Payne' era). IMO the debut album stands out in the 'Wetton' era and 'Aria' is my favourite 'Payne' album, but I love all their albums. You have to be in the mood for playing it, you're right calling it 'good quality rock' or call it 'AOR'. The 2008 album 'Phoenix' is 'too much of the same', I just hoped for a good mix between ballads and heavier stuff. The latter is not present  >:(. Fortunately the cd has stopped playing now  ;D.

I saw them playing DSOTM live in Rotterdam, Holland. Man, what a glorious night that was.

Actually, I have a live album entitled Asia Live 09-XI-90 Mockba with a poor production but that really rocks. I recommend it  8)

I own that album too. Indeed, it's a great one. With 'The Smile Has Left Your Eyes' as an absolute highlight *horns*.
