Now playing:
Magic Pie - "Circus Of Life"

Not many people here, who listen to Magic Pie, I guess.

I listened to'm a bit some years ago, on your recom, Paxi, but they didn't take hold - and there's so much that does ;)

JP:
Yes - "Tales From Topographic Oceans"
First two 'songs' (or the first 40 minutes) are really nice. After that, it's not that consistent. But overall I like it!

Agree. The beginning of the album is well-thought and -tried ... but then it's as if they ran out of ideas and just experimented and jammed.

Well, everyone was doing that at the time ;)

A.C.T - "Circus Pandemonium"
Wow, this album still amazes me. A.C.T really made progress. I can only imagine what their sixth album (which will probably be released in 2023) will sound like!

Yeah, I have to get back to'm. They're actually pantheon with me, ya know ? It's just that I've been into heavier stuff lately ;)

NP:
Opeth - "Pale Communion"
Even my dad likes this one! ;) He listens to it once in a while.

Opeth were once leaders and genre-defining in metal. Ghost Reveries is imo the pinnacle of that course. Seems like Mike Å tired of the very dark and heavy stuff - which is understandable when one lives it so long. Now Opeth make fine albums, but it's not the stuff you look to for revolution.

Hello everyone  :D

Hell-O, my dear Funky Boy :)

Everything well?

Yesterday I listened to Ghost Reveries by Opeth for the first time in a bit. Defo my favourite of their albums.

Defo meaning what ?

But else I agree: Ghost Reveries rules *horns*

Quote
Today it was Target Earth by Voivod which is another solid album by one of the most interesting , challenging progressive bands over the last 30 years. Not their best but pretty damn good anyway.

Yeah, I have to get back to them too ....

Which are your faves, Funky?

Magellan - Impossible Figures 8)

You seem to have become quite a Magellan fan, Jonesey.

So, how dya like Age of Impact ? Pretty cool, huh ?

Yes - "Going For The One"

That one was revolution!!!

Funky, here are a few great albums that can compensate for your disappointments:

First, two super Christian metal albums:

WASP:  Golgatha

7 Horns 7 Eyes:  Throes of Absolution

WASP need no explanation.

7H7E are a metal group from Seattle. They were recommended to me by a local dude at a concert with Jeff Loomis (Nevermore were also based in Seattle). The name is from the Apocalypse. The music is top-league, and the lyrics very thoughtful, about being a person of Faith in these times - and lovin' metal ;)

One of my recent, very gratifying, discoveries is Tribulation, from Arvika, way up in the Swedish woods, near the border to Norway. They got the black thingy, and goth too, and with surprisingly modest means, they create a very atmospheric, flowing, constantly shifty and thus catchy mood, quite of their own, and it just begs for more, and more ....

Get both their recent albums:  Children of the Night  &  The Formulas of Death

If ya need to blow out yer remainin brain cells, then here's the fix:

Fear Factory:  Genexus

I expect you're familiar with FF. They're one of the few bands that have kept themselves at the cutting edge of metal for three decades now, and also tailored their own very special sound. This is their latest and best album. It's very busy, and brutal - they pretty much draw in everything metal - so it takes time to adapt to.

One can start with the slow, pensive, and very atmospheric Expiration Date, YouTube link in a previous NP post of mine.

This sounds much better, Funky 8)

I actually wrote some lines to you specifically in my previous post - if you scroll up, ya know ;)

But with the latest three Fear Factory albums, you simply can't go wrong. Best of all, get Genexus, that's the latest and most brutal. You can warm up with the wonderful atmospheric Expiration Date, last track, nb 9.

FF have something with battering up yer mind for quite a while, and then they wrap up their albums with a slow atmospheric piece. Works well!

They were quite a surprise to me. I thought I had trawled up everything top-league by now ... but life has its surprises in store for us all :D

I actually found them on a side track: I have long planned to go to the Textures concert in Pumpehuset, Copenhagen, August 25 - a super Dutch group by the way, similar to FF. Turned out that Textures were nb 2 priority that eve, playing before FF. So I pondered ... hm, how can this be ... I thought FF were some outdated metal band from the 90's, couldn't be all that big any longer. I decided to check'm out just the same, as they were boxed together with Textures. Man, what a surprise, whew: This is some of the absolute best metal around, musically maybe even the best, if not lyrically; but with several listens, Burton C. Bell's lyrics really go deep too.

The musical maestro is Dino Cazares. And Rhys Fulber on special efx (a better contraction) and co-production also adds his.

Funky, tell me what ya think of'm ... :)

Hey guys, this is not only for Funky, don't miss out on this very exciting band *horns*

I've dug the Magellan albums out prompted by Trent's regrettable demise.  The Explorers Club outings are excellent too, I think I originally overlooked them thinking they were by The Explorers Club, a very different band altogether :-[

Just started listening to:

Iron Maiden - "Book Of Souls" (on Spotify)

Have listened to "Brave New World" a few years ago, when I was trying them, and thought it was nice. I heard they put out a double album with the new one and that intrigued me. So now I'm listening to see if I can find anything in it. It's not really progressive rock, but it rocks nevertheless. I'm only three songs in at my first listening, so not fair to give a full opinion on it yet. What I can say, is that the sound quality is not really good... Badly mixed or something. A muffled sound.

The fourth song: The Red And The Black is not bad at all!

Paxi, metal has been around for so long that we now have pop metal and progressive metal. That has always been the basic difference between resp. Maiden and Priest. Nightwish, Rammstein and Volbeat also belong to the first category.

If you wanna hear what metal is capable of today, I suggest you listen to Fear Factory - their latest albums - my fave group now *horns*

Well, I wouldn't call those bands Pop Metal. But not Progressive Metal either. Iron Maiden seems to be a true Heavy Metal band (although, I heard some Progressive Metal elements yesterday). Nightwish is more at home at Gothic Metal, or probably even Symphonic Metal. Rammstein is some sort of Industrial Metal (but with a very own style within this subgenre). I think Pop Metal is more or less something like Van Halen, or Kiss, AC/DC perhaps. Although I probably would describe these bands as Hard Rock nowadays.
