Robert Reed - "Sanctuary"

A.k.a. Tubular Ommaridge, or Ommular Bridge, or Tubular Bells 10.

Yes I really need to try Magenta properly. Is that album the best way to start? Robert Reed probably is some sort of a humble genius. I love the Mike Oldfield album that he did.

Yes, I would definitively say that Seven is the best way to start. And it's also the right time if you are in a retroprog mood these days.

Speaking of what :

NP : Kaipa - Sattyg

funkster

Recently I have been listening to ...

Enslaved - In times and Riitr. Very good indeed and I would have thought right up Nicky's street ?

Gojira - Way of all flesh

It should make Nick happy, Funkster. You are the one who comes the closest to his metallic tastes.

NP Dream Theater - The Astonishing

Don't know what to think of it yet. Let's call it a work in progress.

NP The Neal Morse Band - The Great Experiment

Wow, this one took me by surprise ... and what a great one. Very impressed !

You hadn't heard it earlier? So is it in your 2015 top ten list? ;D

The Tangent - "The World That We Drive Through"

Ahhh I love the sound of good Prog in the morning.

Right, Funky Boy, Enslaved and Gojira are both pantheon with me *horns*

Purchased RIITIIR and In Times recently, so I got'm back to Ruun.

With Gojira, I have Flesh and Mars. Haven't listened to'm for a while tho.

I can recommend Borknager, another Bergen-band. Their latest Winter Thrice is tremendous. Got ICS and Vintersorg in the mix, should get your mouthwater a-runnin ;)

And of course Wintersun's Time I, particularly to you, Funky, as you can take the full arsenal :)  My current fave. Think Wagner, Mike Oldfield, and warmetal all in one - quite a cocktail, but that's really what it's like *horns*  Super lyrics too by Jari M - sets yer f*n mind spigginn :o

C'est vrai, Msieur Býpï

You guys are resting a bit much on yer laurels. Let me remind you: A proggie should be fearless, readily casting him/herself into the fire!

Vintage DT, I'd say, very recognisable, but also going new ways *horns*

How can one say anything derogatory about DT since Innocence Faded ;)

My new discovery:

NP  Tribulation:  Children of the Night

Allround metal, I'd say, very melodic and catchy, but also devious. Super *horns*

Doing a lot of The Doors too these days. Just got some of the the latest remasters.

Waiting For The Sun was my first love in rock, so it means something very special to me :)

Doors I and Strange Days are *horns* too, but after Sun, stardom and booze took over in Jim's life :(

Hi Nicky

I have listened to some Borknagar and it is slowly sinking in. That was recommended on here - https://manofmuchmetal.wordpress.com/  which I can highly recommend.

Bit of thrash recently as off to see Exodus the week after next.

I have same 2 Gojira albums and they are a bit good  *horns*

Must check out Wintersun then as well. Plenty to keep me going ...

Gazpacho - Demon

I was also listening to a lot of Gazpacho today:

Gazpacho - "Molok"
Gazpacho - "Tick Tock"
Gazpacho - "Night"

Listening to "Night" is such an amazing experience. I also think that "Night", "Tick Tock", "Missa Atropos" and "March Of Ghosts" on the one hand sound very different from "Demon" and "Molok" on the other hand. With "March of Ghosts" as somewhat of a transitional album I guess. Of course, the very first three albums in Gazpacho's discography are something entirely different altogether. I find the last two Gazpacho albums very difficult to get into.

Absolutely true, that's why I love them so much. ;)

I really believe they haven't made a single bad album since Night, but the last two definitely need some time to sink in.
With Demon it helped that I attended at their concert last year, all the pieces fell into place, so to speak.
And because I didn't have the cd Molok at that time, it took a while longer with Molok, but it's so good.

I can really call myself a fan these days. :)

Yes, no doubt about it ... even if I have no list actually. But it deserves to be on everybody's list.

And by the way I really enjoy Kaïpa' Sattyg that you recommended  ;)

NP Stratovarius - Infinite

Teunis

Peter Gee - East Of Eden
Subsignal - The Beacons Of Somewhere Sometime

np: nothing yet, but it'll be probably something from Riverside :'(

Previously played:

Beardfish - "Sleeping In Traffic, Part 1"

Now playing:

Riverside - "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves"

Still my favourite Riverside album. Really focusing on the guitars now.

I'm listening to:
Riverside - "Love, Fear And The Time Machine"

I have arrived at the bonus disc, and it works really well on this monday morning. I'm mesmerized.

PH

Arena - "Immortal?"

It's been a while since I last listened to this album. Regarding this album, the question mark should actually be an exclamation mark!

Bupie

I ordered a Gazpacho double CD compilation (yes, I know, compilations are evil  :-[) so it seems that I will finally discover the band that you guys are talking about so often.

In the meantime :

NP Avantasia - Ghostlights

You evil evil man.
Just for fun, I was checking for compilation albums in my collection. This is what I found (and why I bought it):

Anathema - "Hindsight" (unplugged versions, and was in a real Anathema mood when I bought it)
Anathema - "Falling Deeper" (very cool reinterpretations of earlier songs, and my introduction to Anathema)
Arena - "The Cry" (cool to have all the Cry's in one package, and because they sound very different, and because I'm a fan ;) )
Big Big Train - "Make Some Noise" (bought it because of the 4 new songs)
Steve Hackett - "Genesis Revisited II" (nice 21st century covers by the Genesis guitarist)
Gavin Harrison - "Cheating The Polygraph" (jazzy arrangements of Porcupine Tree songs)
Spock's Beard - "The First Twenty Years" (bought it because of the new 20 minute epic written by Neal Morse)

So actually, I think none of these counts as a real compilation album (except for Spocks). And there's always something special about it that justified the purchase.

That's what I always keep telling myself.

PH

Right now I'm listening to:

Yes - "90125"

PH

Previously played:

Roine Stolt - "Hydrophonia"
Yeah, I think I already said somewhere that I like this album, so I won't do that anymore. And I also said that Roine is a great guitar player, so I will only add that he's very good at keyboard and bass as well!

Yes - "Heaven & Earth"
I'm a bit divided about this release. There are some sweet melodies on this one and therefore I like it a lot. It's not really proggy, although I guess they tried. There's a lot to love, but one thing that makes me a bit sad whenever I listen to it: they sound old, bored, tired and slow. Except for Jon Davison. He sounds like he's performing alongside his heroes, proud and full of childlike energy.
The last song on the album has a keyboard solo that should be played three times faster. And there are more of those moments on this album.
Perhaps I should just play this album at twice its speed. ;D

Nicky, what do you think of this album? Do you recognise anything in what I have just written?

I love it *horns*

Yes, I can follow you, except that I wouldn't say that they sound tired; instead that they're mature gentlemen ;) who still wanna stretch their limbs, as well as they can.

It's vintage Yes, as good as only Yes can do it.

I wasn't expecting something wild and crazy like Mayhem or Wintersun; I was hoping for some more Yes as I know and cherish them - and that's what I got 8)

And yes, Jon D does add a lot of youthful vitality. Of course he feels honored to be in the mix with such personalities - wouldn't you ?

And it's probably the last "real" Yes album, as Chris carried the name - and ensured continuity - and Jon and Rick were gone.

So it does have a very special place in my heart :)

;D

Or maybe listen to something that naturally has a 2-3 times faster tempo, like Wintersun and Mayhem. Maybe you need to stretch out a bit more musically, Paxi Boy ?

Played:

Amoral:  Fallen Leaves & Dead Sparrows *horns*

Fine album, melodic and exploratory; some Sieges Even, some Zero Hour, and other moods. The singer sounds very much like Arno, and the harmonies are like SE.

Tribulation:  The Children of the Night *horns*

Highly original and well crafted, melodic in a weird way. Tribulation have been added to my pantheon 8)

This album was elected by the journalists of Sweden Rock Magazine as "Album of the Year" 2015 - deservedly :)

Just like Priest - up to Nostradamus, their great masterpiece 8)

btw, that's two prog bands in a three 'word' sentence...do I feel a new pub-game coming on?  :-X

NP - XX.
Not too shabby...well played gents!

Next up will be 'Dead Heroes Club'.
Never heard of this lot, but finding that their CDs are listed as 'prog' on eBay and massively pricey, I went to Amazon and bought albums #2 & #3 from Caerllysi at sensible prices.  :)

See y'all in 2024 (that's in circa 50 minutes, er, it sez 'ere).
