Steve, are you into Jugulator and Demolition, the two Ripper-albums ? Very different from the Halford-albums, and great too.

Yup, shame they often get slagged simply 'cause it's not Rob Halford.

Anathema - Weather Systems (probably still my favourite 2012 release, but Neal Morse is coming closer ...)
Marillion - Sounds That Can't Be Made (already better, but far from convinced ::)).
Katatonia - Dead End Kings (dark, but pretty enjoyable)

Oh, our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time'

You wont regret  *horns*

Then get Fear, Paper Blood, and X, in that order. Then you'l have the essential Royal Hunt albums  :)

You know that AndrĂ© Anderen released three excellent albums under his own name ? - Changing Skin (1997), Black on Black (2001), and OceanView (2003). I'm planning to get those asap too  8)

NP  Royal Hunt:  Season's Change  (on Paper Blood)

Wonderful song  *horns*

So you've come of age
And so you want to meet God
Sure you can
He's right here next to me

NP  Anubis Gate:  The Detached  *horns*

Ya know this other great Danish prog group, Jonesey ? Heavier and more jarring than RH, but just as fascinating, in a different way  8)

The Detached and Andromeda Unchained are the essential AG albums, I'd say  ;)

Toto - Wings of time (Kingdom of Desire)

PH

Devin Townsend - Epicloud

Not bad! But for now there are no songs that really stick except for maybe True North and Liberation.
But this will probably change, cause it's very powerful and strangely catchy stuff.

Deep Purple - Made in Japan.

A classic classic 8)

Sometimes it seems that an album calls out to you.
This time "Storm Corrosion" called me to play it.
It's always nice when an albums does that.

Especially when it's an album that has not been played that often. It means that it's a grower. It means there's something in it that says: "Like me! Like me! You know you want to! There's this instrumental middle section, and there's that intro. Oh! And have you already heard this nice bit here?"

Other albums say: "If you play me, I'll make sure it will be a very long and boring road. There's nothing here for you!"
But when you decide to play these kind of discs anyway and you actually made it to the end, it says: "Told you so! Now, leave me alone!"

In the very end, some of those malignant albums finally say something like this: "Oh well, okay. Try me once more and I promise you there might be some nice bits..."
Do you trust them?

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black

One I keep coming back to *horns*

I actually like all Nevermore albums, the first one a bit less  8)

Jonesey, ya know that Jeff Loomis has issued two albums under his own name: Zero Order Phase (2008) & Plains of Oblivion (2012).

Superduper stuff, tellya  *horns*

NP  Several Royal Hunt albums, jumpin around  :)

I know all the songs now. Gonna make a mix with my faves for friends who like RH (cuz I brought'm there)  ;)

Frankly speaking: if I don't like a new album of my favourite bands/artists immediately, I just want to like it and give it several spins until it clicks. But often, after getting recommendations from a band you don't know and you don't like it at first listening, you don't give it enough time. Proggers do need more than 24 hours in a day ;). So I do recognise what you wrote ;D.

just: Asia - XXX
now: Toto - The Seventh One

Cheers, yup.  Got both of those plus Mr Dane's particularly pleasant platter *horns*

Recently Played:

Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud (2 disc version, of course, with Epiclouder)  -second play, going to like this one a lot
Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction             -giving it more of a chance now, does have growth potential
Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine                         -went back to this after Nicky's question.  Yup, I still like it a bunch.
Rush - 2112                                                      -old album, recent purchase -- the music is good, the lyrics frankly are a bit silly
Yes - Close to the Edge                                      -vinyl replacement, still a winner
Discipline. - To Shatter All Accord                        -simply one of my favorite albums now
Trevor Rabin - Jacaranda                                    -on progstreaming, some nice instrumental work, not sure if I'd play it a lot long-term though
Threshold - March of Progress                            -on progrstreaming, thumbs up, probably will buy
Big Big Train - English Electric, Part One               -on progrstreaming, now safely on my "to buy" list

NP: Discipline. - Push & Profit

Their first album.  Still getting to know it, but I like it.  It's a bit lighter than their other two, perhaps not quite as complex, but still good.

I see progrstreaming has new Marillion and new Pendragon now.  Guess I have a lot of listening to do.   :)
"What is that sound?  It's confusing, and boy is it loud!"

NP: Pendragon - Out of Order Comes Chaos

on progstreaming.  Turns out this is a live album, a very long one.  Seems pretty good so far.  I only know a few of the songs from before as I've only got Pure.  I'm not a huge fan of the singer's voice, but it's not album-destroying or anything.  Probably will go over well with serious Pendragon fans, I'd think.

Actually, it's the audio from a DVD release. Has not been released on cd, it's not clear if there will ever be a cd release from this gig. I own the DVD, really great. More people do like the music and are not fond of the singer.

NP  Dream Theater:  A Dramatic Turn of Events

This group always delivers top quality, and this album is no exception  *horns*
