Played:

Blaudzun:  Flame On My Head  &  Quiet German Girls

Cool, but it's enuff for me to hear'm once  :)

Sparks:  Kimono My House

Great group, playful - with both music and language - and highly melodic, a must for proggies, I'd say  ;)

However, I seem to be the only Roomie who likes'm  :(

Teunis, you'r my closest ally these days, how about givin'm a run ?

And Greenie, you must know'm ?

I remember my brother had a 45" single end 70's/beginning 80's from Sparks. Is this the correct band?

I'll have a listen if you confirm this. Maybe you've got a better link to listen somewhere. You're a 'YouTube-y'  ;)

Yes, it is, but my fave Sparks era is 1974-75 with the three wonderful albums Kimono My House, Propaganda, and Indiscreet.

Here are some of my YouTube faves:

Sparks:  Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth  (Dutch tv 1974  :) )   www.youtube.com/watch?v=haf5s0b--zw

Sparks:  Hospitality On Parade   www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSBNE9qnLaI

Sparks:  Get In The Swing   www.youtube.com/watch?v=avypBDJ68AQ

Sparks:  Reinforcements   www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9C50NMZeGc

And here's the YouTube Mix with 100 Sparks songs. Here you also get some more recent pieces:

I've given this album several spins, but I don't know what the fuzz is all about  ::). I prefer the Alan Reed stuff, don't like the voice of the new vocalist and the 'rockier' style on this album. Some fine moments but overall .... 6 out of 10  :).

Now, this is a pity Nicky, but these Sparks vids are not available in Germany. Says something with UMG and GEMA, what are the german copyright sherifs.

However, my list with stuff to check out is long:
Manning, Great Escape by Seventh Wonder, Pendragon: Not of this world and latest albums. These are all from here.
Then I borrowed almost the whole Strawbs discographie from a music buddy, want to listen to Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention too.
Then interesting things on lastfm. And ... and ... and

Now a question: Maybe anyone of you has an idea for an interesting artist/band on Sony music? What I know is Springsteen and Kansas.
Here was an action from a supermarket and I have some downloads for free.
Well, some more than others because I know someone who knows someone who...
Wow, tired of dancing has connections. I'm delighted. :)

I just played them all. The music on the first one 'Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth' reminded me of early Queen so now and then, which is not necessarily a disadvantage ;). Some nice parts but generally it's not my favourite type of music  :-\.

But I found the single my brother had: 'Beat The Clock' http://youtu.be/QE6l0eqVafc

It was fun though  *horns*.

Thanks for the Queen reference by the way, Teunis. I'm now listening to "Made In Heaven" again after some years now.
For some reason I always thought of Queen as a very special band.

Lots of bands are inspired by them. Just to name a few of my favourites: Dream Theater, A.C.T, Muse...
We can't deny Queen's influence on these bands.

Yeah, I know that Sparks are for the few. Donno exactly what it is that does it  ???

When I first heard them some thirty years ago, I liked'm, but they didnt become faves, it was just like I picked up some soundbites of their special music, e.g. Mother Earth and This Town ... tick tick tick ... and then recently, when I by chance ran into'm again, I checked'm up, and then it clicked bigtime, man, that melody and playfulness simply went right in  8)

Well, iac guys, promise me that those of you who are open-minded (not counting the striplings) will revisit  ;)

I'l admit that initially I missed Alan; Paul Mackie seemed to have a more regular type singing, not as personal and under the skin as Alan, but I realised in the course of XXV that PM really unfolds his talent, and has moments where he also creeps under my skin (like look below)  *horns*

We gotta give the PaulMa's a chance, it's always hard to fill out a pair of very big shoes  ;)

And altho I like Dreams a real lot, XXV is simply: right up there, keeps the ball runnin  *horns*

Played:

Amon Amarth:  With Oden On Our Side

Moderately good, but rather monotonous  :-\

Arch Enemy:  Rise of the Tyrant

There's more goin on here, some pretty good riffs and solos  8)

I don't mind the occasional growl and shout (as you know), but on these two albums, the singers growl their way thru, man, from beginning to end, and combined with the rather narrow limits of the bands' music, it doesnt amount to all that much imo. But OK, for youths, who go for rebellion, rather than variation  ;)

Here's more me:

Explorers Club:  Age Of Impact

Guys, give the first track Fate Speaks some more runs. Fading Fast is the endearing one, but Fate Speaks is the one that kicks ass for real, man, those guys, Billy on bass, and Terry on drums *horns*

"We're out of control
We're getting worse now
And we're selling our souls
It's just too dark"

Judas Priest:  Nostradamus

Guys, before you again make fools of yourselves, please listen to some of this album - you'l really be surprised  ;)

If ya want "music for the thinking man", well, then this is it. It sure got me hooked, and also got me searching further in many directions  *horns*

"Desecration I beheld
A world of men gone mad"

Pallas:  XXV

"Your knowledge has made you cynical not wise
Your cleverness is hard and unkind
You think too much and care too little
More than technology, you need humanity
More than cleverness, you need compassion
Without these qualities, your lives will end violently
And all will be lost"

Arena:  Seventh Degree

"It all began with a single spark
The universe, the world and me
That spark - it's still there
The source of living things"

This is for me the vanguard of prog  *horns*

Well, enuff entertainment from me today, guys  :D

I think this one will be a grower.  Still want to give it a few more spins before reviewing.

Nicky - actually no, I don't know Sparks at all beyond having heard the name.  I'll try to listen to some of your links of them soon.
"What is that sound?  It's confusing, and boy is it loud!"

I went ahead and played Nicky's links to Sparks on YouTube.  They sure are catchy.  Seems like the lyrics are what make them really interesting (the goofy melodies are fun, but I'm not sure they'd hold my interest for long on their own).  The video for Hospitality on Parade shows the lyrics, and that really helped me appreciate it.  Certainly worth a listen if you're in the mood for something *different*.

Thanks Bupie, as for Sony catalogue I think I go for 1 or 2 missing Springsteen albums.
There is some nice comedy too and at the moment my son devours audio books,  Justus, Bob and Peter, five friends by Enid Blyton and such stuff is always welcome. :) I cannot type the three questionmarks because its changed to smilies.
I saw you mentioning Kansas the other day and its a band we absolutely have in common!   *horns*

The melodies have a tendency to stick in yer brain after a few runs - that's one of their thingies  ;)
