Special is indeed a good word to describe it. Love that album.

At last a serious newbie  8)

Welcome, Ben-R  :)  - extra welcome cause we had some very unwelcome intruders recently  >:(

Yup, QOTSA have their own very special niche in progworld. Indescribable, gotta be experienced  *horns*

I also love all their albums. Era seems most far out, so that's probably why I like it best  ;D

NP  SyX:  The Damnation Game

Already this second album of theirs was/is excellent, has a lotta drive, melody, full-fledged musicianship, and the special SyX sound, altho it's still a long way to "V: The New Mythology Suite"  *horns*

Damnation was the first album with Russ Allen. He seems to have been a big improvement over Rod Tyler for the band.

I can thus recom all SyX albums from Damnation to Paradise Lost (2-7) + Live On The Edge Of Forever  *horns*

Nicky.

Revolution Renaissance is a multinational heavy metal band founded by guitarist Timo Tolkki after he left Stratovarius in 2008. The studio lineup for the New Era album was Michael Kiske, Tobias Sammet and Pasi Rantanen on vocals, Pasi Heikkilä on bass, Joonas Puolakka on keyboards, and Mirka Rantanen on drums. Tolkki himself is the only one included in the permanent lineup, which was announced later. In March of 2009, the band released their second album Age of Aquarius with a permanent lineup. The Band said that it was "by far the darkest, heaviest and most symphonic album that Tolkki has ever been involved in." In October of 2009 Timo Tokki announced that both Justin Biggs and Mike Khalilov have left the band due to musical differences.

Hope that helps. I wouldn't call it run of the mill but neither will it be one of my all time favourites. They're quite good.  ;D

NP Dark Matter - IQ currently the awesome Harvest of Souls.

By the way Stratovarious are quite good too.

Thanks, Iggy, very informative  :)

Looks like it's not top priority for me.

Till now, the only Finnish metal that has gripped me is Children Of Bodom.

I have Sonata Arctica's Unia on my shopping list; I'v heard some tracks and it sounds promising.

I'v also heard some Stratovarius, but it hasnt clicked yet.

Can any of you recom some other good Finnish groups/albums (not Nightwish) ?

NP  Library rustles

Nice that it's so quiet here.

Occasionally a Pakistani guy sits here and plays some (what I call) Punjabi jive that all pc users join in on, but that's ok too. I have a good concentration  :)

Else it's difficult to listen to music here. That's why I usually wait till my sojourns in Malmö with that  ;)

The Butterfly Man

NP: Dredg - El Cielo

I went to see Dredg live for the first time a few weeks ago and they were fantastic! Really a great live-band. They maybe are a little too 'alternative' for Roomies at first sight but just underneath the surface there are a lot of proggy moments to be found. Delving deeper into this band is really rewarding. I think their music is pretty original as well. They sound like no other band and I think that's very rare these days. 8)

Dredg is unfortunately also a band that has taken a big hit by today's download-culture. They even stated in a recent interview that this years output 'The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion' may well be their swansong, which makes me very sad... :(

My fave from Sonata Artica is Silence : very melodic and rather easy listening light speed metal. Unia is more demanding, not bad but it hasn't clicked with me so far despite a half dozen listens ...

NP Ten - The Essential Collection 1995-2005  CD 2 : The Ballads

Don't think I have any more Finish music.

A friend at work 'forced' me to listen to Stratovarius and I quite liked them. I think Elements is one of their better ones. As I say nice for a change. You may have noticed but I am far more into prog than metal.

NP  Dark Tranquillity:  Fiction  &  Character

One of the big Gothenburg metal groups.

The singing is mainly growl, but else the music is not so extreme, and there is a lot of melody, keyboard atmosphere, and tranquil passages. A bit like Skyfire and Andromeda, tho heavier.

Yeah, the heavy metal parts of Opeth; but Opeth have a much greater scope.

Still, Dark Tranquillity's (a third DT) Fiction is worth a listen, sufficiently different from anything else, and Fiction is probably their most varied album to date  ;)

Pleasant with some nice bits to it, but yeah, not exactly a revolution.  Wrong Simone, although she is a redhead.  And Arjen's partner in crime would no doubt be pleased to see someone else playing like a girl (which is the motto of Lori's shredding website).
"What is that sound?  It's confusing, and boy is it loud!"
