NP  Queens Of The Stone Age:  Songs For The Deaf

Altho also quite grungy, this album is far more pleasant; also more pleasant than QOTSA's latest, Era Vulgaris - altho I agree with the asumption that we live in a vulgar age:  I think that all people seek immortality in this transient world, but it seems to me that, more and more, people seek it in acquiring and owning things (materialism) - and that I find frightening  :(

Anyone else into this thoughtline ?

Nicky.

Interesting observation Nicky. And where will you find immortality? Materialism certainly is a trend, but what I think is really vulgar about this age is that so many people seem to be seeking his or her 15 seconds of fame which has turned into a race to the bottom - how low can you go - in the media and especially on the TV (Big Brother, talkshows like Jerry Springer etc). I've simply stopped watching TV, only turn it on to watch a DVD of my liking and otherwise prefer listening a cd or reading a book 8)

Songs For The Deaf is a great album BTW! Don't play it much cause the missus really hates it. She "tolerates" a lot (even some DT sometimes), but she urged me to turn this one off immediately and never put it on in her presence ever again :-\

It's frustrating when partners can't tolerate your music.

NP Heaven and Hell - Vangelis

I found a few of the cd's for £3.

I hadn't listened to them since my brother left home 30 years ago. As I recognise the music and can remember it I guess he played it to death.  ;D

Afterthought: this is not completely new of course, in ancient Egypt the pharaos already made a stab at it ;)
But it seems to have spread to the masses these days.

Ah well, as I said, she "tolerates" a lot, it's a bit of a mood thing as well, when she's tired etc it can really get on her nerves, which I can understand.

Yeah, that sure is vulgar. There was an old Roman who said (and now I think I'm repeating myself in the Room, but this one is worth repeating) that one should give the vulgar (common) people bread and show, and then they'l be satisfied and won't cause trouble. Well, that seems to be the case still today. As I also mentioned earlier, people who are into Chanson Grand Prix and stuff arent really musical, instead they get fascinated by all the glamour (and of course the men are on the outlook for b*s and stuff - well, I guess I also watch a bit of this stuff occasionally  ;D::)

In Denmark, we also have X-factor. (Yeah, I know you also have these shows in all other European and North American countries). Now, what surprises me is that even intelligent people - man, even some of my friends  :o - watch this type of vulgarity. What this tells me is that there's so little access to real rock music (classic music and jazz are far better off) that a lot of people have gotten the impression that this glamorous junk is the best there is. Man, it's sooo sad, considering how unbelievably many fine prog groups there are around now, and how much great music they're making these days. I think that some of the administrators in the music business oughtta really consider whether they maybe are committing the Crime Of The Century  >:(

;D ;D

I'm surprised about her reaction, cause my lady actually enjoyed Deaf, while she found Era Vulgaris disturbing - and that I understand far better, cause EV is disturbing, but in Nixworld in an enjoyable way, yaknow, like titillating.

And these QOTSA guys gotta sense'o humor that really strikes home with me  ;)

The Tubes - Outside Inside

I often play albums after I've seen mention of them somewhere and thought 'I've not played that in ages!' - this is a classic example.  Pete Trewavas has it in his top ten on the Marillion site and I couldn't resist the urge 8)

It's worth scrolling up and down the page to read the other band-member's comments, too.  Steve Hogarth's are particularly elegant and enthusiastic, but then I'd expect no less...

Just played: Aragon - The Angel's Tear and Pendragon - Pure (the latter twice in a row)

Have to proceed with tiny baby steps with my lady, she likes Asia and Saga now and is joining me to the upcoming Marillion acoustic gig this fall. Neo-prog is more or less ok, the above mentioned albums were played in her presence, not complained about and even got some approval. Getting her to like QOTSA is not within reach I'm afraid ::)

Spot on Nicky. The thing is that the "common people" are by far the majority so if you look at it from a demand and supply perspective it makes sense that so much inferior stuff is around everywhere. And because it makes for easy diversion there is a lot of demand for it, many people just want to enjoy themselves without having to think to much. But we're talking like elitists now...

NP  The Smiths:  Meat Is Murder

Not really my thing, but since Moz has done so tremendously much for animals and vegetarianism, I feel I owe it to him to listen to his music  :-\ :D

Guess one can be progressive in different ways:  While Moz is real prog with regard to ethics, and his lyrics are quite original and biting, his music is rather Britpop. Otoh so-called proggies, outside of music, are in general rather conventional and have stone-age habits like meateating  :-\ ;)

Road trip play list:

Gazpacho - Night
Gazpacho - Tick Tock
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Martin Orford - The Old Road
IQ - Frequency
Devin Townsend - Terria
R.E.M. - Reckoning

Most of these got played twice, and I think Martin had the hat-trick.  I brought along several other choice selections, but for the most part, I decided I was quite happy with the discs already in the player.  The music definitely gets credit for whatever shreds of my sanity survived the trip intact.  Oddly Gazpacho sounded great in the car, no problems with road noise drowning it out at all, while the Devin Townsend actually did have parts that didn't take to the road that well.  I'd have guessed the opposite.

JP: The Killers - Sam's Town
NP: Killing Joke - Pandemonium

I think Ki ships in two days...

Just: Peter Gabriel - So
Now: Peter Gabriel - Us

I've been having a bit of a Gabriel urge (as you can see) and so dumped a bundle of 'em to the iProg.  Actually, I'm on the last track of 'Us' now - must play something different next and avoid going for that hat-trick!

A logical step after Gabriel, given that Hammill has contributed backvox to Gabriel's work in the past *horns*

NP  Queensrÿche:  Hear In The Now Frontier

Guess this is a hat trick too. This album has slowly crept under my skin and I find myself more and more longing for it, and therefore it's one of my most played and enjoyed. Never thought that initially, as it seemed bland.

And guess that's a bit like with women (here's a tip, Greenie): The ones that come and smear their b*s in yer face are the ones you get tired of fast, while the subtle ones are the growers (and the ones that make it g* for real (guess these are the sorta images that work in the R*))  ;D

Queensrÿche really changed a lot (read: are progressive like crazy). OM I and Empire are definitely radio-friendly, altho if you dig deeper you keep finding more and more interesting stuff.

However, the albums I go for more and more (in the long run) are the ones from Promised Land on. Simply divine  *horns*  ;D

Yes, Erik, we can seem so. But it's not that I like priding myself in being an elitist, I'v become one cause (in the long run) I don't compromise on quality  :-\

Interesting Nicky, Hear In The Now Frontier has received a lot of harsh criticism and is widely regarded as their worst effort. I don't have it, but maybe I should give it a try cause I have all the other albums from OM I onward except the latest one and agree with you they got more interesting from Promised Land onwards (that's still my fave). I found Q2K also a grower.
