You must live far from Manhattan  :o

Nicky.

Not super far, but I'd rather eat a beet than go to Manhattan for shopping.  It's much easier to get around the suburbs, and there are plenty of stores in the area.  Liquor stores aren't open so late (not sure if they are even in the city), although I know a bar/restaurant I can walk to if I feel myself going into Guinness-deprivation shock.   ;)

Into the bonus disc now.  The live version of Ghost Opera (the song) is really nice.

Yeah, they probably don't play prog there  :-\

Yeah, it's fun and scary, but I don't consider this song one of the best on the album. I'm hot on Rule The World, with the wonderful introductory Solitaire, The Human Stain, Blücher, Love You To Death, and Mourning Star  *horns*

NP  Queensrÿche:  Q2k

Tom, it has a mood similar to the QOTSA albums. I'm just wondering: What's holding you back from gettin some Queensrÿche albums ?

I don't know, for some reason I'm not really triggered to play some Queensrÿche, although I do like O:M 1. Maybe I should visit their MySpace someday soon, and just listen to some songs. Maybe that will do the trick.  :-\

Thanks for the Mastodon tip. I have all their other albums. Clearly gotta get Crack too  :)

What are the other albums like? From what I've heard (quite a few years ago already) they are pretty aggressive, especially in the vocal-department. But I'm willing to invest some time in getting familiar with their back-catalogue, since I'm really amazed by their latest album! And besides, these days I actually like growling, as long as it's done to serve the song, and not just for the sake of it!

One of the tracks on this single (Black Bart Blues) is probably my favourite Maiden song.

... I'm really amazed by their latest album!

Do you mean OM II, Take Cover, or American Soldier ? AS is technically their latest album, altho it's not yet released.

What are the other albums like?

Very different from each other, proving that Q are a true prog group.

Jonesy and I already described several of the Q-albums. In short, taking the best, Rage For Order and OM I are proggish rockin rock and wonderful melodies. Empire is lighter and even more melodic. Promised Land is dark and brooding. Q2k is grungy and edgy, a bit like QOTSA. OM II is back to form, but heavier than OM I, and also has some esoteric elements.

But all this is basically f*in around. Q are a phenomena, a group of highly intelligent seeking musicians struggling to express their angst, fears, lusts, joys, dreams, and emotions in their music, like Arena, like DT, SyX, Aghora, Opeth, and all of our beloved prog bands.

Of course, Geoff Tate's singing is overwhelming, and it creeps under your skin. But the other guys are terrific too. Scott Rockenfield is one of the most attentive and expressive drummers, close to Tool's Danny Carey  8)

You really only know what Q is when you have their entire catalog and dig yourself into their music for hours on end. Isnt that the case for Arena and DT, guys ? Well, it's sure as your h*ons the case for Q too  *horns* *horns* *horns*

Speaking of which: I shouldn't be saying this but... I like AS.  :-[ :-[ :-[ ;)
A return to massive form if you ask me.  :)

Hmm, grungy and a bit like QOTSA.
I agree with the Grungy part to some extend but i can't here Queens Of The Stone Age in Q2K.
I do like the album though. It's much, much way better than Hear. That one was awful. Multiplied by ten.  :-\
Rage is also quite good but OM I is a gem. A Masterpiece. An essential masterpiece.

QuoteOM II is back to form, but heavier than OM I, and also has some esoteric elements.

See, that's where you and i differ.  ;)
I like the first half of OM II but after that...well it goes on and on. A bit too long if you ask me and the elements that made OM I a masterpiece are simply missing in OM II.
The chemistry isn't there. For me it's not a follow up to OM I but an album that stands on its own.
Just a Q. release. Nothing more, nothing less.
And they really really really ( though i think he was/is a heck of a singer ) shouldn't have asked RJD (dio) to do the vocals for DR. X.

QuoteScott Rockenfield is one of the most attentive and expressive drummers, close to Tool's Danny Carey  8)

Sure?
He's good, nothing wrong with that but Danny is way better. More technical then Scott.
But all of this is coming from a non-musician so why take that seriously?  :D

Danny is more obviously ingenious. But if you listen in to Scott's playing, you realise that he too is a wizard at percussion  *horns*

But iac the purpose of this exercise was to get Tom involved, and I recken that this should do it  :D

NP  Slayer Live At The Roskile Festival June 1998

Pretty heavy, man !

Not much variation, but they do grip ya with their sheer massive onslaugt and insane guitars. Sorta Metallica even heavier and faster  *horns*

But I have to hear their studio albums too.
