NP  Slayer Live At The Roskile Festival June 1998

Pretty heavy, man !

Not much variation, but they do grip ya with their sheer massive onslaugt and insane guitars. Sorta Metallica even heavier and faster  *horns*

But I have to hear their studio albums too.

I know someone who's into Slayer a lot.
I've seen the booklets and such... Well... I was amazed...

I'll stick to Dream Theater and the likes.

I'll certainly try to put it in should I ever come across her.

Jonesy, it'd be easier if ya reversed the order  :D

Have we learned nothing from the Kinks song, Lola?  A little research ahead of time can be very wise.  ;D

Do you mean OM II, Take Cover, or American Soldier ? AS is technically their latest album, altho it's not yet released.

Very different from each other, proving that Q are a true prog group.

Jonesy and I already described several of the Q-albums. In short, taking the best, Rage For Order and OM I are proggish rockin rock and wonderful melodies. Empire is lighter and even more melodic. Promised Land is dark and brooding. Q2k is grungy and edgy, a bit like QOTSA. OM II is back to form, but heavier than OM I, and also has some esoteric elements.

But all this is basically f*in around. Q are a phenomena, a group of highly intelligent seeking musicians struggling to express their angst, fears, lusts, joys, dreams, and emotions in their music, like Arena, like DT, SyX, Aghora, Opeth, and all of our beloved prog bands.

Of course, Geoff Tate's singing is overwhelming, and it creeps under your skin. But the other guys are terrific too. Scott Rockenfield is one of the most attentive and expressive drummers, close to Tool's Danny Carey  8)

You really only know what Q is when you have their entire catalog and dig yourself into their music for hours on end. Isnt that the case for Arena and DT, guys ? Well, it's sure as your h*ons the case for Q too  *horns* *horns* *horns*

Nicky, I think you misunderstood me. I asked you about Mastodon's back-catalogue, since you mentioned that you have all their albums except the new one... ;) But good to read you're so passionate about Queensrÿche though, it might help me to finally delve into some of their albums!

Right, Tom, it's a bit dumb of me after I made fun of Bupsie's faux pas  :-[

Well, iac I got Mad up from his chair with some interesting takes on Q.

:D I never dared to try Slayer but if Slayer is basically a thrashier/heavier version of Metallica, as Nicky defines it and as I read many times, I guess I will keep my distances too. Plus, I tried Manowar twice and I am still :P :P :P so I am even more cautious than before ...

NP Pendragon - Pure    *horns*

I really like this one more than any of their previous (and numerous) albums. The sharp and heavier guitar riffs -thanks to Karl Groom, I guess- give the energy than Pendragon's music was lacking so far IMHO. Since the great melodies are still there, it's an almost perfect blend  8)  I admit I had given up on the band many years ago (I didn't even listen to Believe) but I am very glad I changed my mind.

To those who found Pendragon too mellow but who like/love PT's FOABP, Pure is a must-listen.

PH, if it's not done yet, give it a try  ;)  Even Nicky should find enough substance to satisfy his prog-metal needs.

It was the electric version.  :)
After that came the acoustic version of course but i don't find it as good as the original.

NP: Live - Awake (The Best Of)

Yeah, I needed something a bit more relaxing after the intensity of Mastodon's Crack The Skye.

I'm not nessecerely a fan of 'best-of' albums, but this one is actually quite nice! Live are a good band to listen to every once in a while! :)

NP  Testament:  Signs Of Chaos: Best Of

Sounds pretty good so far  *horns*

Anyone else into Testament ?  Mad, bet you are  ;D

Rune had a big bag of cd's at work. He told me I could borrow as many as I wanted for weeks. Didnt need to be told twice. Got some thirty of his cd's - just for pleasure  :)

There's some metal, and also Django Reinhardt and gypsy-jazzy stuff (as I told you earlier, he's into that now and plays it himself)  8)

I know someone who's into Slayer a lot.
I've seen the booklets and such... Well... I was amazed...

I avoided Slayer for a long time, mainly cause of what I'd heard about their image and lyrics. But once I started listening seriously to their live album, I was very pleasantly surprised. They are clearly ingenuous and very intense and original. I started reading their lyrics on the net, and it's true, they're about all sorts of frightening and unpleasant things, but what struck me was that they're very wordy and the language is on a quite high level. I think that to some extent iac, just like Nevermore, the Slayer guys wanna confront people with some dark sides of reality and myth, very much in your face.

So if my hunch is correct, they're not that bad at all  ;)

Mad, whadaya say ?

Iac proggies should be a bit daring. We don't goto war with AK's (except for Jonesy, he shoots at everything that moves, one way or the other), but we should dare to explore all parts of progworld  :)
