I read that the sound of this one [Metallica's Death Magnetic] is very poor due to mixing issues.

That's one of the several vicious rumors that particularly Metallica are prey to, probably spread by people whose lives are so boring that they get a kick out'f running down others.

Who's the producer of DM ?  Answer: Rick Rubin !  Do you seriously think that he'd settle for anything less than perfection ?  And in my ears the production is perfect.

Another vicious rumor about Metallica, prevalent in Denmark strangely, is that Lars Ulrich can't play drums. Now isnt that silly  ::)  OK, he might not be a Mike Portnoy, but he sure is top professional.

Nicky, who seems to be the only person in the world that loves St-Anger  ;D, has certainly an opinion about it ...

Metallica is not one of my favorite prog metal groups (top league: Nevermore, Dream Theater; second league: Kamelot, Tool, Iced Earth, Symphony X, Steve Vai, Thought Chamber, Zero Hour, Redemption, Circus Maximus, Sieges Even, Opeth, Stride, Aghora, Mercenary, Seventh Wonder, Vanden Plas; third league: Metallica, Helloween, Andromeda, Threshold, Dark Tranquillity, Wuthering Heights, Pagan's Mind, Enchant, Section A, Spiral Architect, and probably some others that I have to check up more).

What I like about them is that they havent sold out despite being multiplatinum. They're still ingenuous, if not ingenious  ;D  They continue to challenge themselves and their fans, in contrast to bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Motörhead (the ¨ for you, Mad) that find a formula that sells and continue to use this formula for ensuing albums. Plus that James & Co. seem like down-to-earth guys that you can have a beer with and shoot the bull.

I can't say whether St. Anger is my fave M-album - havent listened enough to their albums - but it sure is an adventure. The problem with it is that it's rather monotonous, so after some 4-5 songs I actually tire of it and long for something else.

So if this doesnt set off a discussion ...  ;)

After several spins, this album really does grip me by the b*s. It definitely is the masterpiece that it has been touted to be.

I can't talk about an album that I have not listened to but I can swear you that on the French DT forum, MANY real Metallica fans complain about the production of DM although they do like the songs. And to their ears, the problem is obvious. And they don't seem to be the only ones : http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=105530

Go to disagree with you there mate

I think the most recent Maiden and Piest albums are far more challenging as opposed to death magnetic which sounds like metallica crica 86-91 ie when they were good as oppsed to 95-05 when they were complete and utter pony  ;)

Got to disagree with you there, mate ....

That's fine with me, Funkster, but it looks like you made quite a mess of the quote  :)

I just don't find that Maiden and Priest have evolved/progressed much since they found their respective styles some thirty years ago, while Metallica have really taken some serious risks - that's just what many fans have criticised them for - and for me that's essential:  That every new album from a group takes you utterly by surprise. That's what I understand by "progressive".

NP  Bo Kaspers Orkester:  Hund

... which is "dog" in Swedish (and German).

Quite different, and quite refreshing  :)

Yeah man, some of those songs are absolutely fantastic!
Like The Fleeting Existence Of Time (I think that's the best one of the album!)

NP  Nevermore:  The Politics Of Ecstasy

Recorded together with In Memory in 1996, POE being the very heavy experimental brother.

I now skip the title song and Love Bites cause they're so grating. But the other tracks are nothing less than exhilarating  *horns*

Maybe this can whet some appetite (from Century Media's page on Nevermore):  "Seattle's Nevermore welcome you to This Godless Endeavor, a grand overture where musical tapestries are fascinatingly complex while entirely accessible. Interwoven, multi-faceted melodies ceaselessly crisscross creating a fabric portraying life's labyrinthine mosaic. Intense solo work dips and weaves effortlessly into the album's material creating a colorful while consistent whole. A Century Media cornerstone artist, Nevermore's unique combination of dark melody and rhythmic brutality, has solidified their place in metals elite hierarchy."

Hey guys, don't ya need somethin that kicks ass once in a while ?  Or are we settling into middle-aged complacency ?  :P

Oh, man... there is a lot in this thread I'd love to discuss.

Nicky... the sound problem on "Death magnetic" isn't a rumour. It is a nerve-wracking, ear-bleeding fact, and it's worse on the single than on any other songs - only natural, since the problem has to do with loudness. It's mastered beyond reason, although the guy doing the mastering says it was distorted already in the mixdown that he got to master. Much stuff about this all over the net, including a petition to have them remix or remaster it. The album is now popular to download in its Guitar Hero form, because the sound is supposed to be much better. This I can not verify.

At last, there is a movement among fans, screaming for the business to call off the "loudness war" before they take all the life out of the music.

I've been talking about this for years, and I had a few words about it on our website in 2005. I got a lot of acclaim for what I wrote, so it's clear people have been getting enough for quite a while.
