The overall sound of Asia has always been a little too lightweight and AOR/poppy for my tastes ...

+ the lyrics are soooooooooooooooooooo banal  ::)

I don't understand howe Steve could put up with that. After all, he worked out Tales From Topographic Oceans together with Jon. TFTO is about as philosophic as it gets.

Btw Stevie, how many tastes do you have ?  ;D

I see from your posts that you're into some of the earlier stuff, so you might not automatically go for the later stuff, but it's certainly worth a chew.  ;)

I will certainly put my teeth into it ;)

Peter Hammill is one of my all-time favourite lyricists and there's some great stuff on World Record. 'Perfume coiled like a Thuggee scarf' from the track 'When She Comes' is one that's been stuck in my head for over 30 years now and just won't let go.  'Meurglys III (The Songwriter's Guild)' is one of the best VDGG tracks for me, and includes the following brooding:
"These days, I mainly just talk to plants and dogs,
all human contact seem painful, risky, odd."

It might not look much written down, but when Hammill wails and barks it at you I think it's incredible.  *horns*

Cool and I really recognize that last remark, I was thinking of posting some VDGG in the Great Lyrics thread, but they need the Hammill vocal delivery to make 'm really work. It does work when you know VDGG, I can imagine these lines you've provided here sung by Hammill. Heck, I'm just going to post in the Great Lyrics thread!

NP Marillion / Whatever Is Wrong With You, on YouTube

Marillion issued a video contest for this song of their upcoming 15th studio album, Happiness Is The Road.  This South Park video is nicely done 8)

Really looking forward to the album, a double album and one of the discs is conceptual - now that harks back to their masterworks Marbles and Brave, very promising! Got it preordered, have tickets for the Tour end of the year and for the Convention in 2009, patience is required but good things to come! 8)

NP  Nevermore:  In Memory

This is their second album (formally an EP, only five songs). It's a significant development from their self-titled debut. More confidence, passion, complexity - signature N-music. Definitely an album to get for prog metal fans.

I have the 2006 Century Media re-release, on which there are five bonus tracks. These are for N-aficionados: undated, badly recorded demos that sound like some mediocre garage band, except that you can identify Warrel's unique singing.

But, guys, the official five songs are pure prog metal heaven  :) :) :)

Asia - Alpha.

Lightweight sound or not, I still fancied playing another one.  ;D

I think this is my favourite Asia album.

NP  Candlemass:  King Of The Grey Islands

First spin.

Doom/goth metal. Swedish band with American singer, Robert Lowe.

There could be less drone and more complexity ala Nevermore if you asked me (but nobody ever does  ;D ), but they certainly are one of the most exciting goth metal groups, and better (musically) than all the flourishing nightgownwishes, After Forever excepted.

Disclaimer: This is only my opinion - and not the absolute truth  :D

NP Marillion / Fugazi / Emerald Lies

Killer intro!! *horns*  Before that I played Van Der Graaf Generator, Still Life and H To He Who Am The Only One. Still not sure about the latter (latest I bought), for VdGG it's almost mellow, have to get used to it and doesn't quite have the same impact (yet?) after my previous VDGG purchases Godbluff, Pawn Hearts, Still Life and Trisector (in that order).

It's not one of my favourites, either.  Whilst at work today I got through Vital, Present and Trisector - not a bad VDGG day.  8)

NP: Fish - Fortunes of War.  The live acoustic album of that name, I mean, not the track!

NP Genesis / We Can't Dance / Dreaming While You Sleep

I have listened to this album a zillion times. One reason is I had like 5 cd's then, but mostly because I loved it (still do), my first steps into prog.
