Any other forum members into The Reasoning ?

Thanks a lot for the tip, Bupie and CD. I'm just listening to their samples on thereasoning.com. Great stuff, must say, very much to my taste!

One of the things I really like is all the voices mingling with each other. Redemption do similar stuff occasionally.

My computer audio system took a holiday for a few days, but now it decided to work again   ???

I'm on my way to my LP to note Awakening on my SL  :)

Ian, this is really great! You'v developed some music that is both highly original, cuts into the flesh, and rocks!

Great stereo effects too.

Roomies, we must support this talent. I know that Bluey and John are enthusiastic too.

NP  Andromeda: Extension Of The Wish  (debut)

This is a tremendous album. Vintage Swedish Metal! Johan Reinholdz had been working himself up for a long time before he handpicked his companions and recorded this classic album. The lyrics are also remarkably mature for a 20-year old. Well, he was on his way to university studies in philosophy. The singer is Lawrence Mackrory, and he does a great job too.

So much power, so much melody .... whew.

Unfortunately, Andromeda haven't been able to keep the flame quite as strong as it is here, but who knows what can come out of them again. I'm looking very much forward to their performance at Prog Power Scandinavia.

NP Beatles / Love

I had discarded this one as irrelevant at best, sacrilege at worst, but it did get rave reviews and as I stumbled across it for a bargain this weekend, I decided to give it a try. It's a very enjoyable and inventive Beatles "trip" and it all sounds very fresh and crisp. Really still waiting for those remasters of the old albums that are supposed to be in the pipeline...

Read today that they finally caved in to rehashing the old songs by others, Wu Tang Clan gets permission to sample While My Guitar Gently Weeps.. :-\

Nicky.
It is definitely the 'darkest' part of the trilogy. Not only the lyrics, but it is also less melodious and heavier than the previous albums, but still absolutely Riverside. It's a great album.

Didn't Michael Jackson have the copyrights for most Beatles songs? But I seem to remember that with all his court cases (in the States, you can get away with double premeditated brutal murder, if you have the money, and/or rub some political sore, re O.J.  :o ), he sold the rights, and to whom was that?

But disregarding all that wonderful Americana, the Beatles songs are great, and I really look forward to hearing some new exciting takes on them. I wonder what JM could make out of While My Guitar  ::)

The rights to the Beatles' songs is a complex issue, this is what Wikpedia says:

"In 1963 Lennon and McCartney agreed to assign their song publishing rights to Northern Songs, a company created by music publisher Dick James. The company was administered by James' own company Dick James Music. Northern Songs went public in 1965, with Lennon and McCartney each holding 15% of the company's shares whilst Dick James and the company's chairman, Charles Silver, held a controlling 37.5%. In 1969, following a failed attempt by Lennon and McCartney to buy the company, James and Silver sold Northern Songs to British TV company Associated TeleVision (ATV), from which Lennon and McCartney received stock.

In 1985, after a short period in which the parent company was owned by Australian business magnate Robert Holmes à Court, ATV Music was sold to Michael Jackson for a reported $47 million (trumping a joint bid by McCartney and Yoko Ono), including the publishing rights to over 200 songs composed by Lennon and McCartney.

A decade later Jackson and Sony merged its music publishing businesses. Since 1995, Jackson and Sony/ATV Music Publishing have jointly owned most of the Lennon-McCartney songs recorded by The Beatles. Sony later reported that Jackson had used his share of their co-owned Beatles' catalogue as collateral for a loan from the music company. Meanwhile, Lennon's estate and McCartney still receive their respective songwriter shares of the royalties. (Despite his ownership of most of the Lennon-McCartney publishing, Jackson has only recorded one Lennon-McCartney composition himself, "Come Together" which was featured in his film Moonwalker.)

Although the Jackson-Sony catalogue includes most of The Beatles' greatest hits, four of their earliest songs had been published by one of EMI's publishing companies prior to Lennon and McCartney signing with Dick James — and McCartney later succeeded in personally acquiring the publishing rights to "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "P.S. I Love You" and "Ask Me Why" from EMI.

Harrison and Starr did not renew their songwriting contracts with Northern Songs in 1968, signing with Apple Publishing instead. Harrison later created Harrisongs, which still owns the rights to his post-1967 songs such as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something". Starr also created his own company, called Startling Music. It holds the rights to his two post-1967 songs recorded by The Beatles, "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden".

The Beatles are one of the few major artists who have not released their recorded catalogue through online music services (for example; iTunes, Napster, etc.). Apple Corp's dispute with Apple Computers (the owners of iTunes) over the use of the name "Apple" has played a particular part in this. An uneasy truce between the two companies broke when Apple Computers opened the iTunes Store, after which Apple Corp sued Apple Computers. This was resolved in February 2007, with Apple Computer owning the Apple name but licensing it back to Apple Records."

So Weeps doesn't belong to Jackson but to the Harrison estate who have allowed for the sampling.

QuoteBut disregarding all that wonderful Americana, the Beatles songs are great, and I really look forward to hearing some new exciting takes on them. I wonder what JM could make out of While My Guitar  ::)
The song entitled Gently Weeps features Dhani Harrison the son of George Harrison and Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante on acoustic and guitar respectively and has a rap vocal. It's not a cover as such. It will appear on the Clan's new album 8 Diagrams scheduled for release in December.

An uneasy truce between the two companies broke when Apple Computers opened the iTunes Store, after which Apple Corp sued Apple Computers. This was resolved in February 2007, with Apple Computer owning the Apple name but licensing it back to Apple Records."

And that was the occasion where the long awaited remasters were announced:

Beatles remasters in the works
Neil Aspinall, the managing director of the Beatles' company Apple, revealed that the group is making plans to digitally remaster its back catalogue. The fab four fan website whatgoeson.com reported that last week during his testimony against Apple Computers in London, Aspinall told the court that, "We're remastering the whole Beatles catalog, just to make it sound brighter and better and getting proper booklets to go with each of the packages."

Aspinall added that the company is planning to have the entire catalogue revamped before finally making the albums available online: "I think it would be wrong to offer downloads of the old masters when I am making new masters. It would be better to wait and try to do them both simultaneously so that you then get the publicity of the new masters and the downloading, rather than just doing it ad hoc."

So far none of the group or solo catalogues are available for legal downloading online. The Beatles' catalogue was first released on CD in 1987 and 1988.

Two recent collections, 1999's Yellow Submarine Songtrack and 2003's Let It Be... Naked, were the first new releases featuring completely remixed versions of Beatles classics. There's no word whether the group's other albums will also receive new mixes as well.

Last week, the Beatles' company and Apple Computers, gave closing arguments during the latest bout in the trademark battle over the specifics of the "Apple" name and logo. The fab four filed suit over two years ago after Apple Computers launched their iTunes Music Store, and claimed that the online music service broke the 1991 agreement that prevents the computer company from using its trademark for products "whose principal application is music."

Neil Aspinall, who went to grammar school with Paul McCartney and George Harrison, started out as the Beatles' roadie in 1962. He is the one person to have never left the Beatles employment since their days clubbing around Liverpool. He has been Apple's managing director since 1973.

Bring 'em on! *horns*

NP  Slipknot: The Subliminal Verses

NU-metal, related to Korn and Linkin Park.

Rather strenuous listening initially, but purposeful, exciting, and well crafted.

I expect it's quite enjoyable after some spins. (Not recom for Caps and Bupies.)

They're a multiplatinum name in the States.

"If it's sometimes a chore to get past Slipknot's stratified shock-rock shtick, Iowa's nouveau metal-mongers take the occasion of their third album proper to prove there's a genuinely restless, undeniable musical juggernaut beneath the horror-show masquerade. Producer Rick Rubin has honed their modern metal assault to a fine edge here, tempering it with a compelling sense of dynamics missing from all too many similar heavy forgings in the bargain. But credit the band with hammering together the solid foundations of what stands as their best album to date, a collection that succeeds by--surprise--reverting to more traditional song-forms and occasionally operating at something other than a relentless fevered pitch."  Jerry McCulley, Amazon  (excellent reviewer btw)

A masterpiece. Wow!

Does anybody here know this group?

For a moment in prog history, some of the greatest Norwegian jazz/rock/heavy musicians got together and made this very extraordinary album. To give you a pic, if you would take the wildest parts of DT and make an album of them, that would be a bit like ASU.

So for a Captain, it sounds like bonk, scratch, scream, yowl, pull your cat's tail   ;D

For me, it's exciting and uplifting. (Something wrong with me?   :D )
