So, were they any good? ;)

Oh, they definitely were!

But there venue they were playing in was not worthy for a band like Fates Warning.
Much to small for my taste and I bet their taste as well.
When sold out, I think approximately 200 to 250 could attend over there but with a history like Fates Warning it almost felt like an insult, and it wasn't even near to sold out. :(
Too bad, really too bad.

They played the regular pieces though, good performance.
The Eleventh Hour, One, Life in Still Waters, Eye to Eye, Through Different Eyes. ...
And after the encore they ended with Still Remains!

But the whole concert lasted for about one and a half hour, way too short if you ask me.

The next time in 013, they really deserve that. Or the Boerderij.

A night at the opera by Blind Guardian

Hugely OTT like a mad mix of Queen and Helloween  8)
Yes, it's a good description. I just can't get used to it  :P The songs sound much better on the Live album of the following tour. I strongly recommend this live album to newcomers to Blind Guardian  *horns*

Oh, they definitely were!

Nice! Too bad they played in such a venue though. Maybe the gig wasn't promoted in the right way but then again, sunday evenings are known to be far from perfect to stage a concert so maybe that could also be a reason for the small crowd. Another reason I can think of is that maybe people are a bit tired of the old songs and want them to come up with something new first before they'll be persuaded to visit a concert again. But who knows. The truth will probably lie somewhere in between these points, I was just thinking aloud. :D

I completely re-discovered Queen since I went to see the We Will Rock You musical last weekend. Too bad I only have one album - a 3-disc greatest hits compilation - with all the classics. Although I really like a lot of those songs (especially Who Wants To live Forever at the moment, what a beautiful song) I feel the need to dig deeper into their catalog and listen to some more 'obscure' tracks. Now that's where you guys come in. I would appreciate some tips as to where to go, because their back-catalog is pretty extensive...

EDIT: Never mind, I just stumbled across this thread where I found a lot of useful information (and also a truckload of off-topic nonsense): http://shattered-room.net/index.php?topic=1516.0

Of course, suggestions are still welcome. :)

Okay, care to (try to) convince me by telling me why I should check these albums out first? What is great/unique about them in your eyes? Maybe a silly question but I really don't know! :)

By the way, I know that Nicky is very fond of Made In Heaven but the way I understand it after reading the Queen-thread, this album is much more poppy then their first albums. I don't know but for some reason the combination of 'Nicky' and 'poppy' sounds a bit strange! ;)

NP: James Labrie - Static Impulse

The brilliance of this album continues to amaze me. I liked the previous album (Elements Of Persuation) but this one is much better. It's more focussed, there's more melody, it's catchy as hell and the band clearly developed their sound. And of course James is on fire! *horns*

Another one of my favourite albums from last year. I heard they are in the process of mixing a live-DVD, looking forward to that! 8)

You like it?

I really can't stand this album.
One of the worst albums I bought last year.  :-\
I feel like that James has become a middle-aged man who yearns to be young again.  :-\

And besides that, and I never thought I ever would be saying this: Lately I'm not in a DT-mode.
Far from that.  ???

I am happy that you start appreciating Blind Guardian, Funkster.  Somewhere Far Beyond is my favorite album of theirs, including the mighty Theatre Of Pain and Quest For Tanelorn  *horns* ... and a Queen cover (Spread Your Wings) that I like a lot as a bonus track on the remastered edition ;D

Tom, what is Moon Safari like ?

Really? :( Why do you feel that way? Because the album features some screaming vocals (by drummer Peter Wildoer)? Or because all the songs are pretty short and to the point? I don't understand. ???

I only know the quoted songs from your list and these are pretty good (especially Killer Queen and Don't Stop Me now) so I got those early albums noted. Thanks!

My two fave Queen albums are Sheer Heart Attack and Made In Heaven, for different reasons, as I'v mentioned earlier in the Room - two musts.

:P

Actually I like great melodic pop too, e.g. Moonlight Shadow with Mike Oldfield and the lovely Maggie Reilly (I'v also heard it played live three times (same year); of course, everyone knows, and I expect, loves this song), Sparks' Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth (which probably is the most criminally ignored song ever, also in the Room  ;) ), and of course, talking about Queen, their Killer Queen (on SHA).

Gotta leave again, guys, busy. Well, at least ya got a sign of life from me.

So disappointed I missed their winter tour. Even if all the dates were far, far away from home, I would have made the trip. But I didn't know Avantasia other by its name at the time  :P

Sheer Heart Attack features Tenement Funster, Flick Of The Wrist and Lily Of The Valley and since I adore the covers of these songs 'some band' (:P) did on their last studio album I think I will start exploring this album first. Thanks Nick, and of course Funkster as well! :)
