Marillion - Somewhere Else

[The Butterfly Man]

Okay, now that Marillion released their new studio album 'Somewhere Else' (well, the release date is April 9th but it was already in the shops yesterday so I bought it! ), what is everyone thinking of it?

I listened to it a couple of times, but to be honest it doesn't do much for me (yet) . However, I do think the album needs to grow on me some more. I'll just keep on listening to it, just as long as needed for me to really like it!

Still have it on pre-order so it should arrive here next Tuesday. (i hope). Already heard a few tracks of it and some snippets and i like it a bit. But it seems that it isn't as good as Marbles or their previous work. Up until Radiation that is.

I reckon this is probably Marillions best album to date. As soon as I heard those awesome bass slides in The Other Half I knew this was gonna be an awesome album. There isnt one single track I dont like

Well, to be honest, it's not that bad at all. There are some nice songs on the album but overall it's not better than the already mentioned .com and Anoraknophobia for instance. They can do a lot better than this.

But...

ehm...

What the heck did happen to Steve Rothery? Did someone inflate him?

Ah, after many listens, it finally began to grow on me!

I still think that Marbles is better, but Somewhere Else is a pretty good album in it's own right. I Guess I´m just spoiled after the genius that was (and still IS) Marbles .
Favourite song has to be 'Voice From The Past' by a mile. What a GREAT song!

I''ve listened to this album, but don't really like it that much...
Perhaps I should listen some more to it.

This album seems to be splitting our opinions!

For me this is the first Marillion album i've liked since Fish left. There are some absolutly superb songs on it! And Mrs Jib likes it!

I do like the album. Don't think it's great but there are some great songs on it. Personal favourite is The Wound and Somewhere Else. But...

Now it comes...

A few great tracks doesn't make a great album. To me it's a bit better than Anoraknophobia  and way better than .com and Radiation. Indeed it doesn't defeat Marbles ( yet ).
Maybe i need a few more spins to really appreciate it.

best marillion album after the fish era without a doubt "seasons end"...but we all no doubt have our favs as the wall is pink floyds best many will argue its dark side of the moon....off to see waters on tuesday...cant wait

i have only this last week found out about arena...now im dieing to see them......love prog rock off to see marillion at rock city in june...never been a lover of hogarth...marillion to me is with fish...saying that in the hogarth era they have written some awsome stuff like the great escape...and all of brave.

It's a shame you think that, Mark because the H-period definitely has great songs too. Tracks like The Space, Neverland and Afraid Of Sunlight to name a few are classics.
I think Steve Hogarth is technically a better vocalist that Fish, especially the last few years. But where Fish tries to remain true to his roots, the new Marillion tends to go towards the rock-side. Thankfully they re found their self lately thanx to excellent albums like Marbles and Somewhere Else, which isn't a classic but holds very good songs indeed.

Oh...and Most Toys btw.

dont get me wrong i own all of marillions albums its just i was with them from the very beggining....and followed them avidly as a younger man...the top show being the garden party at milton keynes i realised then they had made it big time after me seeing them at small venues......superb i thought and they deserved it.i was never happy with fish's pro scottish albums with anti england undertones so never bought another album after his solo debut vigil in a wildernes of mirrors.......H i agree has made many more albums..however i loved the style of the first 4 albums.......clutching at straws being a masterpiece...and underated.

i will love marillion forever i grew up with them...i have bought ltd edition marillion artwork from mark wilkinson and they sit proudly on my walls at home.....ive not seen marrillion for over 10 years.....so im looking forward to june

I stopped listening to marillion after they released Holidays... I must admit that brave is really good (excet the 2 heavymetal like songs).
I listened to marbles and somewhere else when they were released... They are really good pop albums, not marillion albums. They should change their name...

Now, you must explain me which two songs you mean by that, frenchsting. The only two i can imagine are Living With The Big Lie and The Paper Lies. Last one is indeed pretty rough but heavy metal? Not in my opinion. 

And Living With The Big Lie is simply awesome. 

Please, ladies and gents, give Steve H. a chance. He deserves it. After all he is the vocalist of Marillion for over 17 years now. Fish did a lot less. 
To me the music of Marillion evolved and not changed simply because Steve H. became the singer.

I did, several times. I just can't stand his voice. Too bad for me - and for Marillion ( )...

I agree Peter but what i meant was that a lot of people are still stuck in the Fish period and only heard a few songs, or less from Steve H. and think that they are experts. Not on this forum by the way, but a good example is a friend of mine.

We talked about Marillion one day and he said that Fish was the better vocalist. Well each to his own of course he's entitled for that opinion but when i asked him how many songs or albums he heard of Marillion with Steve H. he replied: about four songs. He even knew the names of them, starting off with Hooks In You and ending with No One Can.

How can someone be an expert when from the nine albums with H. he only heard a few tracks? 

Like i said, some people are still stuck in the Fish era which isn't bad but only if you know what Marillion sounds like with H.

I certainly think that H-Marillion music is fine and can be - and should be - appreciated and enjoyed by any proggie. The lyrics are arguably more profound than those of the Fish-era. But one can't help wondering: What happened to all the excitement?

It's not a law of nature that musicians must become more sedate with age. Look at Arena - still the crazy guys at 40 and 50+ - and look at old Percy: At 60, he's still running around with his crazy hair all over the place, joking and humoring people, and f&f: Making groundbreaking prog.

Well i saw them on thursday night in Liverpool and they were wonderful - 1hr 45 minutes of emotion and brilliant playing. If you catch them on the tour then you are in for a treat
