PH

Kaipa - Vittjar
Threshold - March Of Progress
The Flower Kings - Banks Of Eden

These three were added to my collection today.
Kaipa and Threshold were absolutely required since I am a big fan. I love Kaipa's playfulness and Threshold is always catchy.
The Flower Kings is a different cup of tea. I only own "Paradox Hotel" which isn't really bad, but I don't play it very often. Besides, if this album wasn't only ten euros, I wouldn't have bought it.
Now I have "Banks Of Eden" which is said to be one of their best, and I am very curious since I love really EVERYTHING Roine is involved in, except for his main band...  :-\

If you try anymore Flower Kings the try Space Revolver which is my favourite FK cd. I think I have Vittjar on the way but have never clicked with Threshold but I only own Hypothetical and Extinct Instinct

Well, I am actually a big fan of Roine Stolt, and his album "The Flower King" is on my "to buy" list for as long as I can remember. If I can find it. I've been told that the two subsequent albums ("Back In The World Of Adventures" and "Retropolis") are kind of the same, so I think I'll go for these albums.
Still, "Banks Of Eden" got rave reviews and I am very curious.

Going to play Threshold first though. The last two studio albums were really good.
"Hypothetical" is really good, but Threshold really did it for me with "Subsurface" and "Dead Reckoning" (also their fanclub release "Replica" is better than it suggests).

PH

Yesterday, I ordered six albums. These were:

- 1973 - Tubular Bells
- 1974 - Hergest Ridge
- 1975 - Ommadawn
- 1978 - Incantations
- 1979 - Platinum
- 1980 - QE2

They are all part of a collection box called:
"Mike Oldfield Classic Album Selection (Six Albums 1973-1980")
And all of them have been recently (2009-2012) remastered.

Nicky007

Paxi, get Mike Oldfield's wonderful live album "Exposed" from 1979 too. Rocks bigtime - still  *horns*

Among the many treats, there's a fine live recording of Tubular Bells, juicier than the original  8)

I'd rather stick to studio stuff first Nicky.
I do have a couple of live albums in my collection, but most live stuff is DVD stuff actually. Some exceptions are:
Arena / Smoke And Mirros live disc (came with the live dvd)
Dream Theater - SCORE live disc (because I was really into Dream Theater at the time)
Kaipa - live disc (came with the boxset I bought)
And various Ray Wilson live cds. That's because there's much Genesis material on it and because I want to keep that special evening alive back in 2006.

Most of the time I don't play live cds at all.

Re: Mike Oldfield

I really would like to have the remastered versions of "Crises" and "Discovery". There are some amazing songs on those albums.

Alright, I updated the photo on my front page.

OK, Paxi, so you removed some stuff, and moved the remaining stuff around. So  ???

PH

Hahaha!
Actually, I removed my video games to another cabinet.
I moved a few of my DVDs to the lower right shelf.
Now there's more room for music!

For example: In the upper photo, the great orange packaging, which is TransAtlantic's "The Whirlwind", has been replaced by "Storm Corrosion" in the lower photo.
In the lower photo, "The Whirlwind" is moved quite a bit to the right. Which means there are more discs.
And the empty space in the up-right corner is filled with great cds now.

And on top of that (and on top of the shelving unit) there is more nonsense stuff.

So, yes... it's... a bit different... :-\

The restriction was that one couldnt read the cd and dvd titles  ???

I wont treat you guys to photos of my shelves: Got some 1500 cd's now (only good ones), 250 dvd's, some 1500 books (some of'm over 1000 pages), and piles of newspapers and magazines (in my bedroom, drives Ms 007 nuts, of course).

Well, being proggie has its consequences  ;)

Today, two cd's arrived on the doormat:

Roine Stolt - "The Flower King"
Finally!! After spending months (actually years) looking for it, I found it in print at the Free Record Shop internet store. It was only ten euros! You don't hear me complain, but surely, this album is a lot more worth than that!

It's still there, so if any of you Dutchies don't have this album yet, spend ten euros on this cd now and get it tomorrow!

The Tangent - "COMM"
For only ten euros I couldn't resist. Their music is really an acquired taste and I don't expect to like it a lot (same with their two preceding albums) but on the strenght of "The World That We Drive Through" and "A Place In The Queue" I'm certainly gonna try!

I expect Porcupine Tree's "On The Sunday Of Life" soon, to complete my collection. Not really a fantastic album per se, but I already have every other Porcupine Tree studio album (including "Nil Recurring", "Voyage 34" and "Recordings") so I figured "what the heck".

PH

Opeth's "Ghost Reveries" is the latest addition to my collection.
Found it for only 8 euros. A bargain for such a masterpiece.
Indeed, a masterpiece!

PH

Updated the photo again. Perhaps Nicky can spot the differences now?

I'll help you a bit Nicky.

Steve Hackett's "Please Don't Touch" and "Genesis Revisited II"
Spock's Beard's "X"

Disorder -> order -> disorder, and you got yerself a bottle of splotch, and a big beaker so that you can drink it in one gulp  ;D

OK, Paxi, let's take a look at your new purchases:

Haken's Aquarius is a supergood choice, this band is one of the most exciting around  *horns*

I'm also very happy that you'r getting well into Yes. These guys have done (and still are doing seemingly) some unbelievable music and lyrics, and they'v had an influence on all serious musicians that goes far far beyond their sales numbers *horns*

I havent heard Spock's latest - which I definitely will - but I'm severely impressed by everything from Snow onwards, at this point very much prefering the D'Virgilio era  *horns*

All these three groups are pantheon with me  8)

I'm also impressed by Steve Hackett's stuff. He isn't pantheon with me .... but that's probably cuz I havent delved deeply enuff - yup, even I havent been all around  :-[

Gazpacho and DeeExpus are a bit light for my taste ... but OK, definitely fine groups  :)

What I'v heard of Glass Hammer - I actually have their Inconsolable Secret - is rather New Agey to my taste, but their Perilous looks interesting, and I'l check it up .....  ;)

Marillion - yeah, OK, nice music ... but why did they have to become so middle-aged  :-\

The other stuff I have on my To Check list .....

Yeah, OK, Paxi, you aint doin too bad  8)

... but if you'r enjoyin DT, Haken and Opeth, you could very well do some RH, SW, CM, Anthriel and Eumeria (just to mention five great melodic prog groups ... and we'l wait with the ruffstuff)  ;)

Actually, the bottle is something my mom brought home when she returned from her holiday in Curaçao. I don't think I'll ever drink from it, since it smells funny... The big blue beaker is where I keep all my stuff that doesn't belong anywhere but I cannot bring myself to throw away.

It's definitely good stuff. These four albums anyway. I really like "Fragile" and most of "Close To The Edge". It's must have material. Especially considering most of new Prog bands are build around the fundaments of bands like Yes.

Too bad D'Virgilio has left the beard. I really like his drum playing and his voice. I like both eras of Spock's for different reasons. 2013 is gonna be an exciting year. I already preordered the new SB album. This time I won't miss the special 'preorder only' bonus track. "Their Names Escape Me" was a really nice (and very different) song and I should hit myself on the head for not having preordered that album...

DeeExpus is not much lighter than anything above.
Gazpacho might be light in instrumentation perhaps. But not light in lyrical contents and (musical) ideas. It's not 'in your face' but it's great evening headphones stuff.

I'm well acquainted with the bands you mentioned (except Eumeria, which I only know from some YouTube videos). I need to get Seventh Wonder and Circus Maximus into my collection in physical form. ;) Just haven't found them in the shops yet, or I was busy with other bands. Royal Hunt is ok, but they don't grip me as much as Seventh Wonder or Circus Maximus. Anthriel is cool 8) but I'm waiting for a new album.

You obviously still haven't listened to their imo most monumental album Collision Course, or anything from their golden period, Fear (1999) - X (2010)  ;)

It's typical: People think that the albums with D.C. Cooper gotta be their best, but that's not at all the case  :-[

André handpicks his musicians, and he does it real well  8)

So are you going to add Tales from Topographic Oceans as well?

One of the 'bad' thing about CD's is that you don't get the full Yes experience. The Roger Dean covers were awesome and the majority of the Yes Albums were gatefolds as well, which doesn't really translate into the CD world.

One of the good things is that you can easily take the music to lots of places. For example: the car. Or when you rip it to mp3s, well, anywhere really! But indeed, the album cover experience is not to be underestimated.

Yes are one of the few acts from the late 60s, early 70s that are still doing exciting stuff and continue to push their boundaries. In fact I can only think of Judas Priest who also still are at it. Fly from Here is a super album, and real edgy, one of their best imo  *horns*

And these are guys in their Viagra age  ;D

Stones have been doin the same stuff over and over again (hm, this phrase reminds me of somethin  :P ) for the past 40 years, and Genesis are a total sellout - sad  :'(
