apokryfer (av gr. 'skjult'), apokryfiske bøker, skrifter som minner om bibelbøker, og er anerkjent som et slags tillegg til Bibelen.
Gammeltestamentlige apokryfer er en rekke jødiske skrifter (300 f.Kr.-70 e.Kr.) som ikke finnes i den hebraiske kanon, men som er tatt med i tidlige kristne oversettelser av Det gamle testamente (f.eks. Septuaginta). Det er uenighet om hvilke skrifter som skal regnes med til de gammeltestamentlige apokryfene. Fra og med Luther ble betegnelsen apokryfer vanlig blant protestanter. Han gav skriftene en lavere status enn de kanoniske. Etter at Luther hadde markert et negativt standpunkt til apokryfene, inntok den romersk-katolske kirke snart det motsatte syn. På Tridentinerkonsilet i 1546 ble det bestemt at de apokryfe skrifter var en del av kirkens kanon. Derfor kalles disse ikke apokryfe av den romersk-katolske kirke, men deuterokanoniske. Derimot kalles på katolsk hold ofte pseudepigrafene for apokryfe skrifter. En vanlig betegnelse på både pseudepigrafer og gammeltestamentlige apokryfer er intertestamentale skrifter. Med denne mer nøytrale termen vil man gi uttrykk for at tekstene verken er gammel- eller nytestamentlige, men at de stammer fra tidsrommet mellom de to testamenter.

Nytestamentlige apokryfer knytter det seg store definisjonsproblemer og stor uenighet til. De fleste vil hevde at nytestamentlige apokryfer er tekster som er bærere av informasjon om Jesus og apostlene, og som presenterer denne i de tradisjonelle nytestamentlige sjangere. Tilblivelsestid kan variere fra 100-tallet til tidlig middelalder. Antallet varierer sterkt i ulike oversikter (ca. 30-ca. 100).

Det er vanlig å inndele nytestamentlige apokryfer i apokryfe evangelier (f.eks. Jakobs protevangelium, Tomasevangeliet), apokryfe apostelgjerninger (f.eks. Johannes' gjerninger, Paulus' gjerninger), apokryfe brev (f.eks. 3. Korinterbrev, Titus' brev) og apokryfe apokalypser (f.eks. Peters apokalypse, Marias apokalypse).

I de senere år har denne litteraturen tiltrukket seg forskernes interesse i stadig økende grad, ikke minst etter funnet av Nag Hammadi-tekstene. Selv om de nytestamentlige apokryfene ikke inneholder historisk informasjon om Jesus og hans samtid, fremstår de som svært viktige kilder til kunnskap om fromhetsliv og teologi i senantikken.
