Nice! 8)
Since bands only go come to "013", Tilburg or "De Boerderij", Zoetermeer, I stopped traveling all across the country going to concerts.
Instead, I rather buy new albums.

PH

Today I played two albums I don't play very often:

Devin Townsend - "Deconstruction"
Devin Townsend - "Ghost"

The former I won't be playing much in the future. It's musically mostly alright, but the lyrics....
The lyrics are totally not my thing and some parts of the 'lyrics' are making me cringe.

"Ghost" is very very very ambient. And because of that, I know I won't be playing this much either.

Tuomas Holopainen - "The Life And Times Of Scrooge"

I like this.

If you don't want to hear all the speeches, jump to 11 minutes, where they play Sweet Child O' Mine *horns*

Axl didn't wanna join the ceremony - surprise ? ;) - so Myles Kennedy does the vocals. He's of course super, but still it's a bit spot-off, as it should'v been Axl. To me Axl is the one who most of all incorporates GNR, with Slash of course a close second. Axl was the superb "madness" of GNR, and without him they are a great rock band, but not the unique marvel that they were. It's Axl who makes GNR pantheon 8)

"Deadwing" is one of my absolute favourite prog albums.

Deadwing is the great masterpiece of PT, daring, experimental, at times real harsh and heavy *horns*

Quote
It's in my top five of 2005. "Octavarium", "Pepper's Ghost", "?" and "Picture" are the other four.

You're right about Octavarium and PG, Paxi. Who made Picture ?

I like the brutalness of Shallow. The instrumental middle bit where it goes crazy (and with the unintelligible vocals) is an adrenaline moment for me. But I agree that Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is probably the best track on the album.

Maybe surprising to you guys, I like Lazarus best. What a wonderful song :)

It's among my alltime fave songs together with Midnight Shadow, Ascension, I Will Remember (Queensrÿche), and some other great songs.

Yep, here's another one. I have "The Platinum Collection" (3cd), Hours, Heathen, Reality, Reality Tour Live, Next Day and am familiar with Earthling and Outside. Great stuff. Heathen is my favourite of the later works, before that I don't really know the albums except for the tracks that are on "Platinum Collection". He has quite a serious discography indeed.

My alltime Bowie fave is Diamond Dogs. That album swept me off the ground in those days *horns*

Do you mean Moonlight Shadow or do you mean this?
(hmm... you learn something new every day by googling a few words...)

It would be cool if you actually meant this song by Harry Gregson-Williams, but somehow I think you're probably just talking about Mike Oldfield's fantastic song. A really nice one!

Yes, Flags And Footprints is a really good song! It also made such an impression on me. I used to play the song three times in a row before going to the next one. I love how it mixes heavy guitars with a very gentle melody. A really catchy power ballad.

Interesting. Long time since I listened to any PT. You inspired me to think about my top five.

1 - Fear of a Blank Planet
2 - In Absentia
3 - Deadwing
4 - The Incident
5 - Lightbulb Sun

Going to listen to Deadwing as soon as I get home. I used to play Open Car with my band years ago. I remember our drummer struggling with the rhythm at first but once he got hold of it... 8) It's such a cool song to play.

Another Deadwing-related memory: While on holiday in Malta in 2011 some band was playing covers on a square near a beautiful church. I was walking by and thinking "hey I know that song". Turns out they were playing Shallow! Although the singer sucked it was nice to hear some prog on the streets. I think I was the only one in the audience who knew the song though. ::)

Hey guys, have any of you heard Pendragon's new album called 'Men Who Climb Mountains'? I think it's a bit of a let-down. I have listened to it a few times but it does nothing for me. It sounds a bit uninspired to be honest. I miss the passion (how's that for a reference? ;D)!

NP: Threshold - For The Journey

Great album. I always thought Mac was the best singer Threshold ever had. But Damian Wilson is really impressing me, first on March of Progress and now on For The Journey.  *horns*

My PT top five at the moment: ...

That actually makes sense, Paxi 8)

I haven't heard PT enough to rank their albums with certainty. I have to listen to them more soon ....

Particularly Blank Planet - which I'll have to get anew, as I lent it out to somebody, you know :(

I would definitely put Deadwing on top. But then it gets difficult ???

I actually couldn't do that with many groups. Maybe only Beatles, Floyd, Zep, and Sagoth - and Outworld, as they only made one album ;D

Even with Arena and DT I would vacillate, altho I've listened to'm masses.

Quote
"Picture" is by Kino.

OK, I had forgotten that one. But I have it, and I enjoyed it very much at the time I got into Arena, particularly Losers Day Parade. Man, that's almost ten years ago now :o

I'll have to listen to it again ....

I actually have four albums by Neal. I haven't listened to'm sufficiently. Will take him up again ....

Quote
That IS surprising indeed. But it is also a very nice song.

Well, I'm very much a romantic too ;)

You know, what raises Sagoth above so many other metal groups imo is that they're drenched in melody ;)

Quote

You're right. I often make that mistake: Calling it Midnight Shadow ::)

I think I'll tell Mike to change the name ;D

Man, how I can listen to that song again and again 8)

Just like the other three.

Paxi, have you listened to I Will Remember ? Also one of the absolute killer songs. It has sort of a monastic mood. And Geoff's singing is absolutely sublime :)

And the album Diamond Dogs ? It's very goth, but also tremendously melodic - very special in a 8) way.

IMO it's a big improvement in comparison with 'Passion'. That awful rap and yodel ::), don't play the album that often. I find 'Men Who Climb' mountains a great album with great melodies and guitar solos. There are only 25 seconds I don't like: the repeated lyrics 'I trusted you' in the track 'Faces of Darkness' :-\. Needs more listens though. But Teunis, please tell me, where are the guitarsolo's? Sure, there are a few leads here and there, but not the big solo's we're used to.  ::)

JP  Queensrÿche:  Rage For Order  and  The Warning

Just realised how utterly fabulous these albums are *horns*

I just wanted to hear I Will Remember, and I ended up hearing the whole album. Also I Dream In Infrared and Walk In The Shadows are immense.

So, who's Rÿche here ?

I know that Mad's enthusiastic about the first albums - so Mad, you don't need to answer, just go off to work ;)

Anyone else ?

NP  Stormlord:  At The Gates Of Utopia

Wiki: Stormlord is an extreme metal (self-classified as "extreme epic metal") band from Rome, Italy. They have released five full-length albums, which are: Supreme Art Of War (1999), At The Gates Of Utopia (2001), The Gorgon Cult (2004), Mare Nostrum (2008) and Hesperia (2013). Their prominent use of keyboards compared to many other black metal bands gives their sound an epic feel, much like power metal.

Cool, better than Rhapsody as I remember them, but I gotta get back to them too ....

Also remind me of Swedish Skyfire - but probably noone here knows them :(

Stormlord were mentioned in the Sagoth Fan Group. There's the epicness, speed, but not much else in common.

But let's see, Utopia's already better on second listen 8)

Don't really like stereotype answers or in this case, lists, but it is quite similar to what you lot think.
I could've made a bigger list, but decided to keep things simple, as the music is complex already.

With Believe Pendragon started to change a bit but I didn't really like that album.
That was different with both Pure and Passion but now I don't really listen to Passion anymore.
Pure however, is still one of their best albums, especially Indigo is such a gem!

I really like their new album as well.
Nick sings, if one could call it singing in the first place, better than ever (!?).
Solo's are scarce but the melodies makes up for that. ;)
