NP  Guns N' Roses:  Chinese Democracy

GNR is now strictly speaking Axl & friends, but as I'v become - surprise, surprise - a big Axl fan, that's quiiite OK with me, and this stuff sounds  *horns*

- so I aint missin Slash and Duff :-\

Just as cooly aggressive as before, even more actually >:(

This is one of the most belabored albums in rock history, but it sure has been worth all the effort. Gratz, Axl & guys :)

Dream Theater - "Dream Theater"

The first half of the album is really good! The instrumental Enigma Machine is a bit of a letdown (expectations were too high?). I don't think it's particularly a good instrumental. But it must be said, the guitar solo in it (the 'slow one', right after the bass part) is reaaally nice! Like I said before, they've done much better instrumentals... But OK, you know, it's not baaad. The Enemy Inside on the other hand, is not bad at all. A decent Dream Theater song, like how we expect it to be. So it's a plus! The Looking Glass is the only song that surprised me, because of the happy feel of the song. I like it very much, it's possibly my favourite of this album. Another plus!
With The Bigger Picture the cheese enters the album. This is pretty much LaBrie's fault, and no pun intended. I have something against choruses where the vocalist sings the title of the song, especially so obvious. The song is a bit of a ballad, and not their best in my opinion. I do like the 'encore' though.
Behind The Veil is instrumentally alright (it's actually a pretty cool song!), but the lyrics and vocal line in the chorus are so cliché and cheesy. I find it unbearable... :-\ It's the only occasion I can think of where I'm so much put off by the cheesiness in lyrics. :o It ruins it for me... :'( Especially because the rest of the song is great! A hesitant plus from me.
Surrender To Reason is somewhere in between the previous two songs. The lyrics are much better (thanks to Myung apparently) and the music is better than The Bigger Picture, although not as good as Behind The Veil. Still, another careful plus.
Along For The Ride is nice, but not a standout.

The big epic, is something that needs an analysis of its own. So I keep that for another time.

It looks as if I'm negative about the album, and perhaps I am, I want to provoke discussion a bit! ::) But it's absolutely not a bad album! I play it regularly, but mostly just selections of it. Because this is just that, an album full of catchy songs that are somewhat alike when you listen to all of them in one run. But they're still catchy songs. And while I am a little bit disappointed, because of Mike's departure, and because I'm sure they could write a 100% great album when they would take their time (a break?), I still like the album enough to put it on my top 10 list of 2013!

To be continued...
(I promise, Nicky ;) )

Nice, Paxi ;)

Along For The Ride can become an addiction. When I start playing it, I have to replay it several times. It deceives, cuz as I said earlier, it has a structure like a pop song, but remember: this is DT - nuff said :)

I haven't yet gotten sufficiently into the lyrics, but in general, I dig Petrucci's Biblically inspired lyrics 8)

Whether Self-titled is slightly better or worse than any other DT-album doesn't interest me much; all DT-albums from Awake on maintain the highest prog standards, and Self-titled does too  *horns*

NP  GNR:  Chinese Democracy  (on repeat)

This one has surprised me bigtime. I expected that I'd like it better than most other GnR fans, but I consider it a real prog masterpiece - man, so much cool stuff put in with care  *horns*

Already got some songs for my Classic list :)

Guys, get this super album !

Try this for an appetizer - for destruction ;)

Good isn't it  :D

Yeah, quite good. But ChinDem and this grip me more:

NP  Testament:  Live in London  (2005)  *horns*

Funky, to my recollection, you'r also a big Testament fan. With Dark Roots Of The Earth, they became pantheon with me. This live recording rips up everything !!!

If you want comparisons, one could say Metallica, Annihilator and Anthrax, but Testament have really carved their own niche in metal, therefore pantheon 8)

Live in London is a good place to start. Excellent recording, and it catches the phenomenal energy.

Guess I'm just a bit heavier than you guys. We have to live with this ;)

Arcane Roots - Resolve

It's highly energetic, a bit repetitive, which is probably part of the "concept".
Arriving somewhere, but not here....

I have to listen more to Sepultura - both eras - and Nile, to form a reasonable opinion of'm .....

Two must-haves for you, Funky: Outworld I, and Angra Holy Land. These two will become favorites of yours, I assure you. And then we can share them :)

NP  Angra:  Fireworks

It's a great album, no doubt, but I have to listen to it a bit more to see how it matches up to Holy Land. It's somewhere between HL and Rebirth, both chronologically and musically, HL having a lot of Brazilian rhythms and atmosphere, Rebirth being more power metal.

Here's a nice song from Fireworks:
