Hope i did not case any offence Tom  :-[

No it's okay funkster. Keep rocking! 8) *horns*

QuoteMy view is that there is just good and bad music - just depends on your personal taste eh  :)

Indeed, in my view it only gets nasty when opinions are stated as facts, that's what starts to make me feel slightly >:(. Especially when I don't agree with those 'facts'. ;)

The thing is, some people tend to look down on any music that isn't considered prog. I experienced this a lot in the prog-community over the years and it makes me cringe. I'm not saying that you or funkster are acting this way, but I just wanted to prevent the bashing of mainstream music on this nice board.

I don't in general feel a need to project myself as a music snob, but between us proggies, I think it's obvious that e.g. the DT-guys exert themselves a lot more in making an album like Scenes than The Killers do in making an album like Sam's Town  ;)

And therefore people like you and me find Scenes more fulfilling  :)

There have aways been artists who feel a need to go deeper than others. Take e.g. Beethoven versus Mozart, or Kubrick vs Bruckheimer.

And correspondingly, listeners who feel a need for stuff beyond mainstream.

NP  Atomic Soul

"Atomic Soul is Symphony X's lead singer Russell Allen's debut solo album. It was released on April 26, 2005." - Wiki, Atomic Soul

Very different from SyX. Michael Romeo and Michael Pinella join in on some songs, but mainly Russ has used musicians from other bands. Not really prog, but great songs, and Russ lets us experience an amazing range of moods with his singing  *horns*

Nicky.

I know what you mean Nicky but not everyone likes deeper more involved music and it is a matter of personal taste.

Anyhoo , lets draw a line under this and move on

Now listening to some R n B/urban/hip hoppity stuff coz i is down wiv the kids  ;)

Sure, Scenes is more interesting than Sam's Town to people who are into progressive rock and/or metal, but I think a diehard Killers-fan would disagree. Like funkster said: It all boils down to a difference in taste and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. What I think is wrong, is to put one genre of music explicitely above the other and claiming that to be a fact. Again, you didn't do that so there is no need to protect yourself. Like I said, I only wanted to protect The Room and not attack anyone personally. I hope you don't feel offended.

There are also lots and lots of listeners and artists who don't feel that need to go 'deeper', so to them mainstream music can be fulfilling enough. Each to their own, right? :)

Again I agree with funkster: Let's move on!

NP: Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare *horns* *horns* *horns*

I'm just wonderin why there arent more people who want challenging stuff  ???

Doesnt the radio stuff get cloying after a while ?

I actually play a lotta A7X these days, really go for'm. They'r young (apart from Mike P), so their lyrics don't challenge me that much, but there's a tremendous amount of youthful energy, wonderful melody, and tasty twists and turns  *horns*

I have to wait with Nightmare tho, as I can't afford to buy any cd's currently, and they don't have it at Cop Main Library yet  :(

Played    Testament:    The Formation Of Damnation    The Gathering

Damnation is their latest, from 2008. They don't really dish up anything new here. There's not much composition either. The guys are excellent musicians, so it's exciting enuff, but it just sounds like they pretty much got together and jammed until there was nuff material for an album  :-\

What I like best is Paul Bostaph's drumming - great drummer  *horns*

The Gathering, their previous studio album from 1999, gripped me more. With this album it sounds like they wanted to push the envelope  *horns*

Great group iac. A good choice when ya need somethin energetic without dragons and endless solos  ;)

Nicky , i saw Testament on that tour having last seen them in 1987 supporting Anthrax

Formation is an ok album but their debut , The Legacy , is far and away their best album and up there with the best metal albums ever in my opinion

After the gig where this album was recorded Rob gave me a promotional copy of Contagion (containing the whole album split into 72 tracks to impede piracy), a few months before it was officially released. Ah, memories! :)

Get OM II too, Tom, just as brilliant  *horns*

These days I'm going thru the Kamelot albums from Dominion to Ghost Opera. Super experience  8)

Mark Vanderbilt sang on Eternity (first) and Dominion (second). He's a great singer, but then Khan took over, and he's spellbinding  *horns*

Kamelot are a true progmetal group. Dominion is nice cuz it's quite simple and very melodic, some nice classic passages. Then starting with Siége Perilous, Khan's first album with Kamelot (the group's third), the music gets more and more complex.

Wiki, Siege Perilous: "In Arthurian legend, the Siege Perilous (also known as The Perilous Seat) is a vacant seat at the Round Table reserved by Merlin for the knight who would one day be successful in the quest for the Holy Grail. This knight is either Perceval or Sir Galahad, depending on the version of the story. The Siege Perilous is so strictly reserved that it is fatal to anyone else who sits in it."

It was a nice surprise that some of the passages reminded me of Gary Hughes' Once And Future King - another album that's waitin for you guys  ;)

Guess that certain themes evoke certain moods in rock musicians  8)

NP  Sieges Even:  Tidal  (on repeat)

I really dig this song  *horns*

Tom, what do you think  ;)

A thing I like about her is that she doesnt at all play on her sexuality - a rare thing in rock these days - all clad up to her neck in a dark robe; it's just the music - m-u-s-i-c - and the music is divine  :)

Mad, ya gotta let this run for a while - put yer thoughts on standby for a moment in eternity .....
