Hey Bups, these guys are real heavy  :o
Right, and so ... ?  ;D

QuoteOne of my pantheon groups. I can particularly recommend their latest two albums, Something Wicked Part 1 & 2  *horns*

Nicky.
Let me digest this triple live CD first (after a brief hesitation, I picked it over JP's Nostradamus, they were disposable at the same prize), I'll see afterwards for the studio albums  ;)

I doubt it : you have found your Celine but I haven't found my Britney yet ...  ;D

Back to Iced Earth, interesting that you recommend their last two since they are the ones that received the worst critics, press and fans alike, of their whole discography. If I don't mistake, the first is with Owens on vocals and the latter with Barlow : his return had raised a lot of enthusiasm amongst the fans but they seem very disappointed by the musical result, not because of Barlow's performance but because of Schaffer's compositions. Could you tell me more about the whole thing ?

You were on your way to buy a copy of Nostra, and in a whim you took another album  ::)

I have to keep reminding myself that you'r a Frenchie. Frenchies are like women: They don't submit to logic  :P

Well, if you had to do a trick like that, Iced Earth certainly isnt the worst you could choose  :)

Could you tell me more about the whole thing ?

Guess I could  ;)

Yeah, I was offline for a few days, out in the countryside  :)

OK, so what are my credentials re this matter ?  I have listened a lot to Framing Armageddon and The Crucible Of Man, thrice to The Glorious Burden, and to some tracks on the other IE albums.

One of the things I like about IE is that their lyrics are so intriguing. The Glorious Burden is about defining moments in the history of the USA. Armageddon and Crucible are about ... yeah, what ?  Well, quite a lotta things, amongst others about how humans have defaulted on treating this planet well. Long ago another race fled into the mountains, and now they'r so frustrated about us humans (particularly the French  ;D ) that they'r preparing to take over instead of us. So they'r training a newborn baby in all the arts to be the leader of this cause. Whew, quite something  8)

Musically Armageddon is my fave IE album. That's cuz ... it's great  *horns*  It's got good beats, most of'm quite fast (mainman Jon Schaffer is an acknowledged rhythm guitarist), lotta melody, Ripper is a fabulous singer (he's also terrific on Priest's Demolition and Jugulator, and on his own group Beyond Fear's albums), and there's some masterly musicianship by some of the best musicians around.

Crucible is also great, and Matt Barlow sings excellently - he is one of the best metal singers -  but he doesnt grip me nearly as much as Ripper  :-\

Well, Matt's a great guy, he became a police officer due to 9/11, returned to rock after some years, and was the original IE singer and a good friend and brother-in-law of Jon, so .....  :)

And now we have Ripper's fine group Beyond Fear. I'v listened a couple'o times to their self-titled album. Takes time. Very heavy, there's Ripper's powerful singing, and quite a lotta things goin on. Guys  ;)

Played:

Cynic:  Traced In Air

I had barely registered that Cynic had put out this album in 2008. Pretty much automatically I had added it to my SL. Now I got a chance to listen to it. And man, what an experience  :o *horns*

Well, get together the two Seans, add Paul Masvidal, and what do you expect ?  ;)

All albums with these guys are toprate, but on Traced you have something extra:  The expected maniacal exciting musicianship, but also some surprisingly classy guitarplaying, and singing and harmonies that are beyond this world, in more than one sense  8)  Reminded me of Three - surprisingly - but the Cynic guys really topped their instrumentation with some wonderful ethereal singing. That's mainly Paul's work; he really puts effort into forming and intonating the words.

Traced In Air is a groundbreaking masterpiece. After about ten minutes I knew that Cynic had to go into my pantheon  *horns*

Tom, Mad, Iggy, Jonesy (hey, stay for a while, man)  ;)

Adagio:  Sanctus Ignis  &  Dominate

Sanctus is from 2001, their debut album, and Dominate is from 2005, their third album. Four years between, but man, are they different:  Sanctus is very SyXish, many references to classical music, and should be accessible to most Roomies. Dominate is very heavy and dark.

Looking forward to hearing their latest album Archangels In Black (2009).

Guess the Frenchies can do a thing or two well.

Guess I kept Sideshow and played it a few more times  ;D *horns*

Tom, does that mean you weren't impressed with their other recent albums or was it just a long wait?  I just have A Natural Disaster, and I'm interested in another to try.

Hindsight (the last track) off we're here because we're here was the first to grab me.

No, I was actually very impressed with their other 'recent' albums, but the last regular studio-album dates back to 2003! In the meantime they did release an acoustic album entitled Hindsight in 2008 (if I'm not mistaken) which consists of re-worked versions of older songs. Also a very good album, but I was looking forward to a whole new studio-album so I'm glad they finally found a recordlabel and came up with this great album.

If you like A Natural Disaster I think you should buy the new album next, and then work your way back with A Fine Day To Exit and Judgement.

NP Magenta - Metamorphosis
Magenta is really a special band for me. Along with Transatlantic, they are my favorite current symphonic prog band. I am really touched by their sense of melody and poetry.

Thanks guys.  The new one won't be released here for another week, so I think I'll grab Judgement.  If the quality is as expected, I'll probably pick up the rest of them eventually.
