JP: IQ - Dark Matter
NP: Knight Area - Realm of Shadows

Egads, two in a row that aren't Phideaux!

By the way, does anyone know what "Knight Area" means?  Is it a parking lot for knights to store their horses?

Manatee, if you like prog-metal then Shadow Gallery is simply a must-have.

Not that technical as DT but more song-based.
Very enjoyable to say the least!

The answer to do I like prog-metal appears to be "sometimes."  I'll see if MySpace has a page for these guys.

NP  Trivium:  Shogun

Excellent, in the range of Into Eternity and Between The Buried And Me, also near Scar Symmetry, altho less harsh, and Mastodon, tho more metalcore  *horns*

Shogun is their latest studio album (2008), outta four albums in all.

I have their earlier Ascendancy (2005), which I didnt like on first runs a coupl'o years ago, as it seemed to me more noise than music, but now I can see that I'l have to get into this band .....

Interestingly there are currently several North American groups making top-rate music in this range  ;)

JP  In Flames:  A Sense Of Purpose

Otoh there's not much in the Gothenburg metal scene that I enjoy. The Gothenburg-groups strike me as being rather rough, unpolished, and unmelodic. Guess I'v left my Sturm & Drang rather far behind me, and I prefer polished, elegant progmetal like Trivium's (at least from Shogun on).

I have heard that Trivium sound like early Metallica Nicky ? Is that a fair assesment ?

Is that a fair assesment ?

By no means !

Metallica were groundbreaking in the 80's. Their music was raw, straightforward, fast and thrashy. So were Hetfield's lyrics.

Metal has covered enormous territory since then.

Trivium today are metalcore, i.e. totally crossover, and completely virtuoso in all genres, in fact so much that they can actually compose pieces, and here and there slow down to some real moodiness.

Great groundbreaking band  *horns*

JP: Phideaux - Chupacabras

I know I keep mentioning these guys, but the epic (20+ minutes) title track on this one is really excellent.   *horns*

NP: It Bites - The Tall Ships

Basically pop, but it's John Mitchell pop, so it's good anyway.

I don't think that Shadow Gallery are Prog Metal. They can be loud but I don't think the Metal bit is necessary.

Try Room V special edition though with 2 CD's.

NP Gazpacho - Night.

Is it heresy if I say I prefer this to Tick Tock?

Well, Digital Ghosts is definitely their heaviest one. Unfortunately the three tracks on their MySpace are all from this album. I agree with you that 'Room V' should be a good start.

Yep you are certainly correct about Digital Ghosts being the heaviest.

The Butterfly Man

The Devin Townsend Project - Addicted

It's great. Listening to it has become really addicitve. It's heavy and in your face, but it's very upbeat at the same time. The song structures are also kept quite 'simple' this time around. For this album DT shares vocal duties with Dutch singer Anneke van Giersbergen and this works really well. I think she adds a magic touch to this album with her soaring vocals in a lot of songs.

Favourite tracks so far: Hyperdrive!, Numbered!

At the beginning of the year I only knew the name Devin Townsend, I wasn't familiar with his music at all. How that has changed since then with two brilliant albums that were released in the course of just one year... :o

Played:

Trivium:  Ascendancy

Still can't like this one  :(

It's a very angry album, with a lotta shout and little melody  :-\

It's amazing that they could make Shogun, such a mature masterpiece, three years later (Mad  ;) )  *horns*

Death Cab For Cutie:  Plans

Nothing to do with death metal; on the contrary, quite gentle atmospheric rock, with nice metaphors  8)

Greenie, you must know these guys  ???

Life Of Agony:  Broken Valley

Again, no metal band, as one would expect, but more hard melodic rock. Nice, but not edgy  8)

Whitesnake:  Good To Be Bad

David Coverdale sings fabulously. It's a pity that he never found a stable group of progressive musicians to work with. The best I'v heard with him is the album Coverdale-Page that he did together with Jimmy Page  *horns*

They made only that one album together.

The Whitesnake stuff I'v heard is excellent and gripping here and there, but only barely progressive  :-\

After listening to Devin Townsend's Addicted pretty much non-stop for a couple of days I played the following albums this morning:

- Editors - The Back Room
- Coheed And Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume 1: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness
- Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
- Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

I'm not sure if these bands are 'prog' enough to appeal to Roomies, but I like them very much and that what matters (for me anyway...;)).

NP: Rammstein - Liebe Ist Für Alle Da *horns*

It's on Soul Searching Sun (1997), Tom.

I'v only heard Broken Valley (2005). I'l listen to it a couple more times, and then bring it back to the library, and unless it starts gripping me seriously, I don't think I'l pursue LOA further  :-\

I'l have to get back to C&C soon tho. Thanks for reminding me  :)

I'm hoping mine will arrive today.  I was much the same at the beginning of the year, but the seven brilliant albums before Ki already had me convinced.   ;)   Looking forward to the Anneke van Giersbergen collaboration.  I liked her voice right away when I first heard The Gathering, but they just didn't have very many songs that grabbed me.

Just barely.  I know the name and have heard a song or two, but I haven't really heard enough to form an opinion.

Whitesnake wasn't taken very seriously here when they were current -- possibly since they're best known for the video of Coverdale's then actress-girlfriend posing on the hood of a car.  I heard a song on the radio several months ago, and I was surprised how much I liked it.

NP: Kamelot - Epica

Epica really needs to release an album called Kamelot just to confuse people even more.   8)

Naturally I had to play this right away.  I like it.  It's almost pop by Devin standards.  By the way, Hyperdrive! is a new version of the same song (no !) from Ziltoid the Omniscient.  I like both versions.  The female vocals are an interesting wrinkle.
