Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare

OK, Bups, so you'r venturing into Vaiworld - great  8)

If you like what you hear, I can warmly recommend the later album Fire Garden, which I consider even better than P&W. I'd say you can skip Sex & Religion (despite the singer being a fave of one of our Roomies; the music just isnt up to Vai's usual standards imo). Alien Love Secrets is great too.

I have all SV's soloalbums - guess I must be a fan of his  ;D

JP  Eleven:  Thunk

I actually find this album just as wonderful (and weird) as Avantgardedog and Howling Book  *horns*

Just goes to show once more that one should always check up things for oneself  8)

Natasha was/is imo the most exciting female singer in progworld. She had an enormous range of expression. Just hear her wailing on No Ground - shattering !!!

NP  Eleven:  Self-titled (album nb 2)

Here, for the first time, I can hear the Janis Joplin thingy  :)

I never read that review, but I agree very much, particularly on the "boring".

That DeTo is overwrought is no news - neither for us nor for him - he does it purposefully. In fact I could easily go with his extreme singing on that album; my beef is that I only like three of the songs on it (forgot which now), the rest I find boring. It's Vai who for some reason wasnt quite up to it. Maybe the chemistry between the two guys got rotten (wouldnt surprise me; DeTo is probably quite a handfull)  :-\

The following Vai albums I find great:  Real Illusions, Fire Garden, The Ultra Zone, Alien Love Secrets, Passion & Warfare, and Alive (in that order)  *horns*

Light And Sound, Sound Theories, and Wild Things I havent listened to enuff. Maybe some other Roomie can help out there  ;)

The remaining albums are either boring, or they'r for me unnecessary anthologies.

What is this revenge for, my messing up the name of your favorite IQ album?  I haven't heard Sex & Religion either, but in any case, I don't think I'd describe "singer" as Devy's main profession.  As Nicky says, he's clearly overwrought on purpose, although he is capable of pulling off some decent melody when the mood hits him.  Bottom line though is that  DeTo's guitar playing and musical composition are his big strengths, and even then, he's clearly not for everyone.  And yes, I know you guys are just teasing me, so no worries.   ;)

NP  Queensrÿche:  OM II

This album haunts/obsesses/possesses me  *horns*

Was long in manifesting itself fully (also enjoyable), but now it really gets me !

OM I is rather accessible. It tells a terrible but relatively comprehendable story. And the music is prog, but it also rocks easily.

OM II otoh has been looooong underway - 18 years - and a looooot of stuff has been goin on in the mind of a certain Geoff. OM II is a musical-poetical-political-philosophical-spiritual tour-de-force (I'm only using these longhaired words to please Bups  ;D8)

Guys, ya got some monumental albums waitin forya:  OM I & II, Zero Order Phase, and Twilight Chronicles iac.

Just to tellya  ;)

How is The Whirlwind? I want it, but have heard mixed reviews.

Since I have not been able to listen to music over the past several days, due to illness and procedures, I listened to music all last night, and still haven't gone to bed.

That's one nope from the north pole. Nothing yet. Also, I am at work, so even if it did appear today, I wouldn't have had the chance to actually get it.

NP: Katatonia - Night Is The New Day

What a great dark and moody album. Perfect for rainy autumn days. *horns*

I'm a bit surprised to be honest that Katatonia is rarely mentioned in here. I think their music would be greatly appreciated - if given a chance.

If you're interested you can get a preview of the album here: http://www.nightisthenewday.com/introduction.html

It should arrive today so right now I can't comment but I have high hopes  :)

UFO - Walk On Water

It's my UFO week. So far, I only have half of their studio albums, which means a decent number of 9, and none of them is bad or even mediocre. Really impressive ...

JP  Ten:  The Twilight Chronicles

Yup  *horns*

NP  PT:  Lightbulb Sun

Just before I encountered Arena initially, I was deep into PT. I could afford it (if ya don't ask Ms 007  ;D ), so I simply purchased their entire catalog at the time. I was less metal in those days, and I enjoyed enormously the ethereal intelligence of Steven's initial excursions  8)

Then came Arena, Deadwing, DT, Nevermore, all that, and I forgot all about early (well, actually 5-6 albums) PT.

Now that I listen to demanding stuff like OM II and ZOP, I like to alternate with some lite early PT stuff.

I had a period some three years ago when I listened a lot to Katatonia, Tom  *horns*

I have three of their albums.

The thing about Katatonia is, like with Cure, that their spectrum is rather narrow; they create a great mood, but there's not much drama  :-\

I'm still working on it, OM II hasn't quite gelled for me yet. It's certainly a grower and an intriguing album, that should be judged on its own merits instead of comparing it to OM I. OM II has been much criticised but I think Queensrÿche have taken a brave step with it after the landmark that was OM I. They're different albums because Queensrÿche is a different band now, there are 18 years between the albums and the protagonist Nikky (that does it for you Nicky, doesn't it ;) ) is a different person now. Note to self: must listen to OM II this weekend.

Yep it's kind of different isn't it.

Still I believe it will be a grower.

Band's are never the same when your fav singer is replaced (for whatever reason).
