Ye of little faith ;)  I'd say either of the 'Sleeping in Traffic' volumes (most probably the second) are the easiest place to start.

Challenging groups are often hard to appreciate on first listen, and if you throw talking with friends and drinking into the mix, there's a good chance most of them won't really see what you're getting at, although perhaps some will be intrigued enough to try another listen.

Well, I had actually already played some of my fave music for three of my four guests. The fourth guy was into Deftones, so it wasnt so far to DT and SyX.

I started out with SyX's New Mythology Suite, which everyone liked. My very intellectual friend from the Hegel-group sat poring thru several SyX album lyrics. They seemed to be very impressed (as they should be).

DT was received even better. Everyone was completely taken by the wonderful Count Of Tuscany (the song, that is, not the guy  ;D ), so I decided at that point to stick with DT, as it was getting late, and I didnt expect my neighbors to be equally appreciative of DT at that volume.

My guests seemed to leave with the impression that groups like SyX and DT are very serious about their trade, and they gained an understanding of the passion one can have for such music (and lyrics).

Two of'm had come by car, so they didnt drink; but I can't claim that I walked entirely straight into bed - but iac I wasnt bothered by any germs  ;D

I'm always looking for new ideas, so I do find progmetal (which is still fairly new to me as a genre, let alone the individual bands) of interest.

I'm the type who, when I find something that grips me, I go straight to the heart. So once I was back into Zep-mode five years ago, I simply had to ferret out what good stuff had come up since then.

Didnt take me long to find DT, SyX and Kamelot, who represent the core of what grips me most.

Admittedly, Nevermore took me a couple of years to appreciate, as they'r rather grating; but as you know, I now find them exhilarating. And their lyrics are also very evocative. A group for the advanced proggie, but then also a must  ;)

I take it despite the names, you don't need to be familiar with volume 1 to "get" volume 2?

NP: Mastodon - Crack the Skye

Mastodon is just an awesome name for a metal band IMO.   ;D

Metal? Are you serious?  ;). Well, it's indeed a little bit too heavy for my taste, but there are a few ballads on this album that  *horns*. The last track for example is great  8).

I heard a fair bit of SyX on Pandora.  Some of it I liked; some didn't really grab me.  I'll listen some more -- maybe they're a band you need to let marinate a bit.   ;)

JP: The Dust Connection - 3 song EP dl as recommended by Mad
NP: Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Linings

NP XTC - Drums and Wires

Seems that I am caught in a 80's new wave revival at the moment. It's good for my relationship with the Empress but I doubt it will last long (the revival, that is) : a Transatlantic is on its way to take me off ...
