Yesterday on my trip back and forth across the mighty Hudson to visit my mom:

There: Martin Orford - Classical Music and Popular Songs
This one's a grower.  Initially I thought it was good but not as good as the Old Road.  It sounded great on the car stereo; the keys are bright and clear -- I think I'll be playing a good deal more of it.

Back: IQ - Frequency
I'm liking it a bit more than I did at first, but I'd still rate it as not one of their better albums.  Pretty good, but I expect great from them.  Can't really tell if the loss of Orford made a big difference.  The new keys player sounds good, but mayhap Orford had a key role in their songwriting.

NP: Marillion - Marbles

A tribute to the lamb lies down on Broadway - Genesis Rewired

Bizarrely enough this actually got one of my friends into early Genesis. I went to an IQ concert and Nick D'virgilio was supporting them on his own. He played a few tracks of the album and my mate was hooked.

Kino - Picture

One of the very few cds that the Empress allowed me to bring on our vacation. Which doesn't mean that I was allowed to listen to it in her presence  >:(

Anyway, a great album. As much as I am thrilled by the Transatlantic forthcoming album, I wish Pete Trewavas would also find some time and motivation for another Kino album. Maybe it will see the light one day  ::)

In the meantime, maybe should I try Blind Ego's Mirror ?

Played:

Pantommind: Shade Of Fate

Bulgarian progmetal band  :o

http://www.pantommind.com/

Quite good, more like Circus Maximus than Nevermore, altho not quite as good. But considering that they'r Bulgarian, where you'd think that metal is virtually unknown, they'r surprisingly adept.

Got to know about'm thru Claus Jensen, who heads IntroMental. They had Pantommind for a while.

The lyrics are simple, but nice imagery, and a surprisingly good singer.

They just put out a new album, their second, Lunasense.

Riverside:  Rapid Eye Movement

One of the nice surprises here was that Ms 007 also liked it, particularly the title track, which certainly is a masterpiece.

Riverside have long been one of my pantheon groups, based initially on their terrific music. This time around I spent some time getting into their lyrics, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Mariusz Duda is a top-league bassist, fine singer, and while the English is rather simple here too (altho more advanced than Pantommind's), Duda proves himself to be well versed in dream psychology and mythology, and theosophy. A real nice read.

And these guys are really on the ascent  *horns*

Guys, how about getting more into the lyrics of prog groups ?  Lyrics are rarely discussed in the Room. The best prog groups make just as much of an effort with their concepts and lyrics as with their music - so we kinda owe it to'm to make an effort here  ;)

Riverside are rising major stars of prog without a doubt.  I got the special edition of the new album (as most of us probably did), and I particularly like the live bonus DVD.

As I think I've said before, I'm of two minds about this.  In principle, I'd be more than happy to delve into lyrics and discuss them, but certain lyrics (often ones that aren't very transparent) have come to have personal significance to me, and in those cases, it tends to bother me somewhat if I hear a strong argument for it meaning something else (since I consider how the music makes me feel more important than necessarily knowing exactly what the writers had in mind).   I would like to see a complete set of lyric for Gazpacho's Night and Tick Tock.  Some of the lines I've caught are really excellent, but I must admit there's a fair amount I haven't been able to make out yet.

NP: Marillion - Afraid of Sunlight

As it happens, I think the lyrics on this album are rather good, although also rather straightforward in most cases.

For me, it usually adds rather than detracts to hear other takes on lyrics than my own, but I respect that we're different there, Greenie  :)

I take it that there are some lyrics that you'd be happy to discuss ?  ;)

Well, I found the complete set of lyrics for Night forya, Greenie:  http://www.leoslyrics.com/albums/52059/;jsessionid=2823D473652B21607F59340FBE3A9BD8

In general, to find lyrics, google  'band'  'song/album'  lyrics

There are a lot of dumb cookies on the lyrics sites, but you get used to it.
