Please do.  And if the U.K. doesn't want her, we'll be happy to take her.  We'll give you Britney, Madonna, and all the Pussycat Dolls for her.

Yeah, it's strange, aint it, that the only exciting North American female rock singer is Canadian  :P

He got a little esoteric and ambient for my tastes with his later albums ...

I don't like your negative connotation of "esoteric". Several of my fave albums are very esoteric, like Arena's Visitor, Contagion, and Pepper's Ghost, Caamora She, Ten's Twilight Chronicles, DT's Systematic Chaos, but maybe you don't like these albums either  :P

Not sure who you mean unless you're joking about Celine again.  I like Margo Timmins' (from Cowboy Junkies) voice as well as Sarah McLachlan (although I haven't really been into her music much in a while).  In general I've always felt kind of warm and fuzzy toward our neighbors to the north.

Again, not sure if you're kidding here.  Obviously I'm a big fan of those Arena albums, or I wouldn't be here.  Perhaps it would be clearer if I replaced the word 'esoteric' with 'experimental'.  I meant esoteric within the context of what I'd grown to love about his music.  Trying new things with music is certainly a feature of prog and not something to be discouraged, but my personal reaction to some of PG's later stuff (and you'll note I have him listed as an all-time favorite on my music profile, so it's not like I'm saying he's crap) was that they were experiments that didn't work very well (at least for me).

Also, cheese is still good.  ;D

Hoping it will click this time. Seems in good way so far  :)

I spent a part of the WE alone so I had the opportunity to listen to some music ... and at a decent volume  *horns*

I played Lou Reed's Growing Up In Public (one my fave albums from him, only second to Rock And Roll Heart) and a couple of Pendragon's, Windows Of Life and The Masquerade Overture. Also watched a bit of DT's Chaos In Motion DVD.

A cool classic rock/prog day  8)

Unlike some Marillion albums which were slow-burners for me, AoS stapled itself to my head on first listen and has never come loose since ;D

'Out of this World' should be played while reading http://www.marillion.com/news/2001/20010308.htm, of course *horns*

It's about time I looked into the Hogarth-era Marillion.  I only have the ones with Fish (not so much a comment on the change in singer as it coincided with my moving into a prog-barren wasteland).  From the songs I've heard, they do sound like a totally different band, but that doesn't mean they're not good this way too.  I've heard a handful of songs, and some impressed me.  I really like 'King' from the above album.  I realize I'm asking a Marillion fanatic, but would you say the whole album is of similar quality?

NP: R.E.M. - Up - 11. Daysleeper

When Matt mentioned this recently, it reminded me how much I love this song, so I decided to play it 6 or 7 times before starting up another album.  *horns*   I think they were beginning to go into a 'slump' around when this album came out, but this particular song is great and would've fit beautifully on Automatic for the People.

Similar quality, yes, but not all similar in style.  Well worth a punt, IMHO, but then you knew I'd say that ;D

BTW, dunno if you've kept up with Fish since Marillion days, but he does excellent stuff as well.  Personally I think both Fish and Marillion have matured greatly and gone from strength to strength over the years.  I don't regret them going their own ways at all, I've now got two sources of high-quality music where once there was only one *horns*

Yes, I did know you'd say that, but I appreciate the description nonetheless.  I think I will give this one a shot since it comes recommended plus there's at least one song on it that I know I'll play a lot.  BTW, you may already know this, but 'punt' means something completely different over here -- it's an American football term meaning to kick the ball away to the other team and surrender possession of it.  I would be much more likely to punt a Celine album than a Marillion one.   ;D

NP: Riverside - Rapid Eye Movement, which I happily own and have no intention of punting.   *horns*

That really takes the biscuit ;)

I'm currently marvelling at just how awesome 'Schools Out' is - another one of those 'only just ripped' albums that I've not played for eons.  Remember the sleeve that folded up into a school desk?  How cool was that?  To my lasting regret, I never had a copy with the paper panties for the inner sleeve :'(

I was moved to play this after seeing Alice in 'Waynes World' earlier.  I though I'd take an un-punt  :P

I hadn't heard much of Alice other than the song 'School's Out' itself until I was past my initial music-buying frenzy period, so I never saw the paper panties.  I'm afraid I only own a "best of" CD of his, but I do like it.  The man has serious balls for someone called Alice.   ;)

'Schools Out', 'Billion Dollar Babies' and 'Muscle of Love' are three albums that I grew up with in my teens and are thus, in my eyes at least, 70s classics in the same way that various Zepp or Purple items are.

Also, my very first girlfriend was a huge Alice Cooper fan, so that kind of reinforced things for me.  At the time Alice didn't tour over here (something like he was banned from coming into the country, I forget the exact details) but I had to promise I'd take her to see him when he eventually turned up.  Some years later Alice came over to play and my (by then ex) girlfriend got in touch and we arranged to get tickets.  She travelled down from where she'd gone off to live and we had a great time at the gig which was really nice.  Apologies if this is a bit too much like a chickflick ending – feel free to vomit copiously or bite heads off kittens, whatever you think best.

IMHO Alice's later career has been of variable quality, but the core 70s stuff is spot on.  My one regret (other than those paper panties) is that by the time I got to see him the 'classic' band line-up was a thing of the past.  I've seen him a good few times since, however, and he's never less than excellent on stage *horns*

Agree. I recently bought School's Out and Killer cheaply for good old time's sake, but I was so impressed with how good they still sounded that I bought Billion Dollar Babies, which also still sounded great  *horns*

But with those three albums, I presently consider that I have what I need of Alice - of course, unless you guys persuade me otherwise  ;)

I saw him and his band on their Welcome To My Nightmare tour in Cop - awesome  *horns*

The paper panties would'v excited me in those bygone days ... but nowadays I go "beyond" wrappings (kinda "esoteric"). But of course, with Jonesy it's different  ;D

Definitely.  A good album sleeve is the musical equivalent of seamed black stockings ;) ;D

As well as the Schools Out cover mentioned earlier, Alice had a couple of other notables.  Billion Dollar Babies was a gatefold made to resemble a wallet, complete with a billion dollar bill inside and various colour cards featuring band members that you could press out.  Muscle of Love came in a chunky cardboard box, complete with a simulated sweat stain.  Now that's what I call art...

Not to worry, I felt the need to get CDs of those old Roxy Music albums for similar reasons.  Music that brings up nice memories is good to have.   :)

NP  Queensrÿche:  Tribe

Strange, I switched to Tribe, and then forgot I had, and I thought I was still listenin to Q2k ... but Tribe is even more grungy-edgy than Q2k. I still hear QOTSA, but now also AIC  8)

Also strange, when everybody else in Seattle was doin grunge, Queensrÿche continued to do rock for a while, but then a few years later they made albums that were bigtime grungy  ???

I can understand why lots of fans got off the wagon with these albums, but to me this is MUSIC  *horns*
