Hey, sounds great. We need'm, you know. And they're multipurpose  ;D

Anything serious ?  Well, you don't need to tell me yet. I'm just nosy - been around with Mad a bit too much  :D

No, I'm not really into Steve Vai to be honest. I don't really have a good reason why ....

No, you can't have, cause there aint any good reason not to like him if you're into DT and that stuff.

Give Fire Garden a run. That's a masterpiece - and you'l like it, for sure; else I'l give a round of Blue Chimays to the whole Room  :o

You're welcome! I already had a feeling that you would like Dark Suns.

Betcha !!!  That's great stuff, man  *horns*

But I'l have to make do with their MySpace stuff until Uncle Rocky turns up.

Fortunately Dark Suns have quite a lot of fine music on MySpace.

Have you tried out Disillusion, Tom (and Mad) ?  Another great group from Leipzig  *horns*

Your description of their music is quite accurate I think, so there's no need to add something to that! :)

That's gettin away with it a bit too easily, Tom. Don't you think that this great group merits some more attention  ;)

Yeah, whadaya think, Tom - and other roomies ?

I'm having some problems with that one. Every so often I give it a run, but it doesnt really grip me yet. I feel that I'm missin somethin, as several people around me rave about it  ???

Let's have some takes on this one, guys  ;)

So I guess that makes me the most heavy of us both! Yeah! ;) ;D

:P Tom.

If you wanna test, then try with Holographic Universe. That one pretty much lies at my limit of heaviness. When it gets heavier than that, it becomes disturbing to me  ;)

No, I'm not really into Steve Vai to be honest. I don't really have a good reason why, but sometimes when you listen to something that you are 'supposed' to like that special feeling is just not there. A feeling I do have with guitarplayers like John Mitchell, John Petrucci, Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert for example.

Funny, you describe Joe Satriani and John Petrucci while in my book Steve Vai should be in that list too. His playing is a bit different than the aforementioned guitarists but nevertheless quite good.

I sorta agree with you there. Some great tracks on it, especially Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams but the album has the ability to grab you by the throat but then...

I consider SV far more exciting and varied than JS, actually up there with Master JP. And I consider SV's solo albums from Fire Garden on (almost) equal to DT's, also lyricswise (the guy is very spiritual, and btw veggie too)  ;D  *horns*

Come on man! >:( YOU made me like Pink Floyd! It's not that I don't open my eyes to new music! ;) And I DO check out your recommendations Nicky! :) You just have to realise that everyone has an opinion of their own. Not everybody likes the same music. ;) And even if you like the same music, it can even be because of different reasons. "If you like ... then you'll like ..." doesn't have to be true for everyone, because every person listens to different things in the music.

OK, I'l admit that you have a valid point there.

But I bet you still havent listened to the CC links that I wrote down for you. They're still there btw  ;)

And you know, sometimes one has to read between the lines. E.g. if someone, particularly someone knowledgable, insists that there is far more to a group or artist than you find on some MySpace list of samples, then that's a lead. Some groups are great not because of hooks but because they build up an atmosphere, and you simply can't get that feeling with 1-2 minute samples.

But I'm happy that you found Floyd. They are AWESOME  *horns* *horns* *horns*

There's something wrong with you ;)

Seriously just goes to prove that because we have a lot in common we still don't all like the same things. Take the Flower Kings (A bloody long way away) All the elements in their music I should like but I can't listen to them. I've played Paradox Hotel 20 - 30 times and it does nothing for me.

NP Stride - Imagine

It makes me think. Nicky, if you want to improve your French and learn about some prog and non prog metal bands, you can check this website http://metal.nightfall.fr/index.php

The design is rather impressive and they are fond of Nevermore and Circus Maximus (I should try the latter one day) amongst others. They even reviewed Imagine and a bunch of ... Ten LP that they define as hard fm/AOR  ;D

... Ten LP's that they define as hard fm/AOR  ;D

I'l see what they write.

What is "fm" ?  - frog metal ?  ;D

I have to comment this a bit: Usually reviewers havent gotten much into the concept and lyrics. The thing is that Gary Hughes and Clive are some of the few real philosopher musicians in rock. That in itself raises Ten (and Arena, needles to say here  ;D ) above the mass of rock. Next, many people fail to realise how much expression Gary has in his singing. I agree that Ten arent as wildly complex as e.g. Nevermore and Scar Symmetry (but then again, who in the Room listens to these ? ), and not as experimental as e.g. Arena and Pallas, but they're at least as prog or proggish as e.g. Threshold, and I find Ten more melodic than Threshold. So I hope I'v gotten a bit closer to putting the right words to this matter.

So, let's see what Nightfall In Metal Earth have to offer. Sounds promising !

Au revoir and tot jeans, as Tom would say  :P

As a Toto fan, needless to say that the melodic and polished aspect of Ten's music is not a problem for me per se and I agree that Gary Hughes is a very good singer. But on the Essential Collection, I feel that most of the songs would have much more impact with an harder approach. They also lack memorable/adventurous soloing. But, hey, that's just me  :)

I don't quite get you, Bups. Arent the rockers on Essential hard/heavy enough for you ?  And I personally find Chris Francis a very exciting and varied guitarist. Are you sure that you'v gotten properly into this album ?  :-\

And I still think that you should get Twilight, their best and most proggish imo  *horns*

Yeah, I'm enjoying surfing around in Nightfall. It's rather strenuous with the language tho. I'v gotten somewhat used to Dumas, but modern rock reviews are quite a different kettle of foie gras. I'm spending a lot of time with WordReference.

But it's good. Soon I'l write my first ballad in French, for accordion and electric guitar - and growl  :o

I like it better than Transgression on first listen. Let's give'm a few more spins .....

The track "Slave Labor contains references to the self-immolation of a person against the corporate world, e.g. Kathy Change." -- Wiki - Archetype

"Kathy Change (1950 - 22 October 1996) was a West Philadelphia performance artist and political activist who killed herself in an act of self-immolation on the University of Pennsylvania campus in 1996. Born Kathleen Chang, she legally changed her name to Kathy Change to indicate her commitment to political and social change.

For 20 years she gave colorful one-woman street performances on Penn's campus and around Philadelphia to protest the government, during which she danced, sang, played the guitar, waved handmade flags, and made speeches. In a packet of her writings that she delivered to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Daily Pennsylvanian, and several of her friends and acquaintances on the morning of her death, she explained the rationale behind her suicide:

I want to protest the present government and economic system and the cynicism and passivity of the people...as emphatically as I can. But primarily, I want to get publicity in order to draw attention to my proposal for immediate social transformation. To do this I plan to end my own life. The attention of the media is only caught by acts of violence. My moral principles prevent me from doing harm to anyone else or their property, so I must perform this act of violence against myself. . . . It is a waste of energy to get angry and gripe at the government. The government must be replaced with a truly democratic self-government of, for and by the people. Those working in industries essential to maintaining life should democratically take over their workplaces and organize an emergency economy to supply the needs of the people. The rest of the people should meet in their communities to organize a new directly democratic community-based self-government." -- Wiki - Kathy Change  :(
