NP  Andromeda:  Chimera

Inspired by Måd  :)

Good to know that you actually pay attention to what i say.  :P ;)

QuoteGood, but not top-league to my mind.

Have to agree on that. II=I is still their best album to date.
Chimera has some decent songs on it but the album is indeed not the best in its kind.

QuoteAnd you gotta skip the first track, which is rather dull; don't understand why they placed it there  ::)

What?? ???
Periscope is beyond doubt the best track on Chimera!  :o

I'm shocked.  :-\

QuoteI consider the first Extension, which was composed and lyrics written entirely by Johan, as better than anything Andromeda has done since...

Extension is indeed a fine album.

Quotealtho I havent yet heard The Immunity Zone. Maybe Måd can fill us in on that one.

Nicky.

Well eh...yeah.

TIZ.  :-\

If you think that Chimera is below their skills than you probably shouldn't listen to The Immunity Zone.
Not that it's all that crap but it travels the same road they walk on since Chimera.
Definitely no classic to me.

NP> nothing yet.
Just turned on the pc.

NP  Genesis:  Undertow  (on repeat)   *horns*

Anyone looking for a stuck-on song on Three (hey, Paxi) should try this one. I even went headbanging (ok, slightly) during the chorus, which means that the stuff rocks  8)

Nicky.

Although I have this album, I rarely play it.
There are some fine songs on it for sure. Undertow is one of them! 8)

OK, I raised my periscope and could see that you were shocked, Måd  :o

I just tried playing it again, and it still doesnt do much for me. There's a middle section that sounds nice, and there's some excellent riffing and drumming (btw guys, Thomas Lejon also does drumming for A.C.T, which is also Malmö based), but that's about it afaic. I dont really like David Fremberg's singing, particularly not on Periscope. Already the next song, In The End, which is much more Reinholdz, is a great improvement over Periscope imo.

It's utterly beyond me that Reinholdz didnt keep Lawrence Mackrory  ???

I actually liked Mackrory's singing so much that I bought Seethings' Parallels two years ago, where Mackrory's much more upfront, but unfortunately none of the instrumentalists have anything near the talent of Reinholdz and Lejon. Can't recommend Parallels  :(

OK, thanks, Måd. I definitely have to have it - I have to have everything with Reinholdz - but it can wait then .....

I remember that my bro listened a lot to Hawkwind some 35 years ago. I myself found'm a bit too, hm, experimental ?

What do you like about'm, and what can you recommend ?  We have three of their albums in the family collection of LP's (from my bro); I could try out some of that .....

Classic/early Hawkwind is a kind of space/psychedelic rock that is captured to perfection on the Space Ritual live set, so that's as good a place to start as any.  It's not a live greatest hits really, as they're not a 'hits' band apart from the obvious Silver Machine.  But it's very much a greatest tracks, in my opinion.

There's also the late 70s Charisma years to consider, after they parted company with United Artists.  A much tighter band, with the emphasis on shorter songs rather than rambling freak-outs.  Apart from Space Ritual, my fave albums are from this period. 'Quark Strangeness & Charm', '25 Years On' and 'PXR5' in particular.  Rob Calvert was on fine form lyrically at this point and has left a fine legacy.

I guess this is all very personal, however, as I saw them a lot in the late 70s and they were always entertaining.  Also, the first time I ever saw Motorhead was when they supported Hawkwind, quite a family event as Lemmy had not long left Hawkwind *horns*

Mad..............................it clicked!

After dinner I dimmed the lights, put the Amaseffer-cd in the stereo and sat down with the booklet so I could read the lyrics and let the beautiful artwork sink in.

Now I can't understand why I could only manage to listen to a couple of tracks and then had to move on to something else. It's a stellar debut-album and now I'm eager to find out what they still have in store for us! *horns*

My favourite tracks now are 'Birth Of Deliverance' and 'The Burning Bush'.

Mind you, I still think that Demian's Building An Empire is a bit better, but at least I am finally able to appreciate Amaseffer's album! ;)

Angra: Rebirth

So what's your first impression, Iggy ?

It's an album that grows a lot with several listens  *horns*

The first few times, it can be rather wearisome.

There's some awesome power metal in this one, but it's not hackneyed clichés, like with Dragonforce  8)

Iac, Iggy, hold out until the last piece, Visions Prelude. It's well worth it - whew  *horns*

Tom, Måd, Jonesey, and John, sumthin for you guys  ;)

Here, check up Justin Gaines "Corporate Rocker"s review on Amazon.com:

"As much as I love the early Angra albums, Rebirth is the album I'm most likely to wear out from repeated listens. Rebirth comes across as a more polished, more mature version of the band's debut album Angels Cry. All of the elements that made that album a classic are present here, from the high-speed guitars to the prominent keyboards to the fantastic melodies to Angra's signature Brazilian musical elements. On top of that, the band finally has a vocalist who doesn't have to rely exclusively on high notes. Edu Falaschi is a major talent, and his powerful soaring voice is no doubt a welcome change for those who were put off by Andre Matos's high-pitched style (which to be honest I never minded).

This album is so powerful and so melodic that it took all of 30 seconds of the first song (after the brief instrumental intro) to have me totally sold. Very few power metal albums leave me breathless like Rebirth did, and six years later it still has every bit as much an impact. Aside from that throwaway intro track, there isn't a weak moment on the whole album. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Every single song is strong."

You don't need to tell me about this one. AHM, Meddle, Dark Side Of The Moon (both live and studio) - I must'v heard each of'm over 1000 times - literally, guys. They were icons of my youth  *horns*

"The title 'Atom Heart Mother' was found when Ron Geesin pointed to a copy of a newspaper and suggested to the band that he would find a title in it. Roger saw an article about an operation that had been done on a mother to provide her with an atomic powered pacemaker, and remarked, 'That's a nice name. We'll call it that. Atom Heart Mother.'"

Isn't it an awesome feeling when that happens?  8)  OK, Amaseffer worked for me pretty quickly, but the principle is valid nevertheless.  Marillion's 'Marbles' and Radiohead's 'OK Computer' took an awful long time to click with me, but somehow seem the better for it now. *horns*
