Sweet Sweden Prog band

Man, they have sooo many great bands in these times. Like:

NP  Scar Symmetry:  Pitch Black Progress

What can I say ?  Whew, superb, great, wonderful, terrific, tremendous   *horns* *horns* *horns*

Just got Oscillation Point (Track 10 on PBP) on eternal repeat.

At this point I experience PBP just as great as Holographic Universe. PBP seems a bit more melodic, more clean singing; but I sure like the "unpleasantness" of HU too (another word chosen for you, Bupsie)  ;D

I can only agree with K. McGinn's review on Amazon.com:

"... the guitarwork is stunning but the soloing and leads deserve some extra praise. Every solo here is memorable to the point that one could pinpoint the solo and match it to the song. The Kaleidoscope God is a case in point, at over 7 minutes it displays some of the most epic soloing on the disc and weaves in some keyboards to enhance the effect.

Of course I wouldn't be able to end this review without mentioning the biggest standout element on the disc: the vocals of Christian Alvestam. I've followed his work since Unmoored's Kingdoms of Greed and this is by far the strongest performance he's done. Thats actually downplaying it though, as his work on Pitch Black Progress fulfills the band's promo-sheet of singing 'every style of singing known to metal' and proves his namesake as the genre's most diverse and underappreciated vocalist."

Now again I'm in doubt whether Opeth or SS are my fave Scandinavian group. F*, I just thought I'd reached the final solution (: SS - bad joke)  :-[  *#¤%&, another sleepless night .....

Note the "Progress", guys. It just struck me that prog bands talk little of "prog" explicitely. Well, why smear it in our faces ?  :D

SS actually have some of the best lyrics around, e.g.

"Now I move on,
To the subconscious states unknown
Dreamworld now gone, I am shown
Why I dream at night and on and on,
Waking through my intuition, this path I must know."

- Dreaming 24/7

and

"Caged inside, I cannot seem to end the battles
Breaking down, I worship the insane
Caged inside, this world knows its torture tactics
Born to pain but never again, no."

- Oscillation Point

Dark ... daaaark - just like Nevermore and Opeth. Hm .....

Interestingly, just like with Rush, it's the drummer who writes the lyrics (re SS, his name is Henrik Ohlsson). Guess not all drummers are dumb  ;D  Hi Deenie  :P

Måd, whadaya think of PBP ?  And Tom, you gotta get into this band  ;)

And Hanin, I don't know Moon Safari. What are they like ?

First impression is still the latter option i'm afraid.
Not that it's a really total crap but it most definitely is not the work of a genius band GnR once was.

But granted, that also was with a different line-up. Mat Sorum (great drummer indeed and recommended by a far lesser drummer called L. Ulrich (10 points to anyone who knows where this fellow chops his woods)) and of course Slash (great guitar player but also a heck of a music writer).

I do.

Especially after two minor classics they did released somewhere in the past.
No matter what you might think of Axl Rose, Use Your Illusion prts I and II are classics in my book and should be in your CD collection whoever you are and whatever you like.

Just my humble opinion.  ;)

Funny, some very nice lady from, coincidentally, also from Denmark ( ;)) recommended Scar Symmetry to me a while back.
But somehow i still haven't paid them any attention.  :-\

Should change that in the near future.

I promise.  ;)

The guy I drive with at work can stretch himself up to AC/DC and GNR (in terms of complexity), and I can stretch myself down to these two bands, so they're our common denominator. (If it was up to him, he'd play Elvis Presley most'o the time.)

So I'v had enough AC/DC and GNR for the rest of my life now  ::)

Those last weeks, I used to play Highway To Hell a lot in my car while driving to work. Songs like Shot Down In Flames or If You Want Blood, You've Got It really put me in a great mood for the day. Energizing is the right word for them (if this word exists). So maybe the guy you're talking about is a Scandinavian cousin of mine ?  8)

Not likely, as France is a black box. Not only do you guys keep your d*s within France, you even reincarnate there  ;D

Bups, I'm just thinking, Opeth, Scar Symmetry, and Nevermore may well be a bit too rough for you (except for Opeth's very acoustic Damnation), but you should definitely try out non-growly melodic progmetal bands like Circus Maximus, Seventh Wonder, Andromeda, Kamelot, Sieges Even, Vanden Plas, Angra, and of course also your own Demians. I'm sure you'l like'm. Aint I right, Tom & Måd ?  :)

Metal Gear Solid?
It's one of the rgeatest computer games ever.

When I was five years old or something, I used to play "Metal Gear" (1987) on an MSX computer along with my younger brother and my dad. Later, when I was eleven or something, during a "bring your toys and games" day at school, someone was playing a game and I recognised the music. The game was called "Metal Gear Solid" (1998) and he played it on a PlayStation. From there on I started playing "Metal Gear" again, and then "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake" (1990) and eventually "Metal Gear Solid" and "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty" (2001). I still have to play "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" (2004) and "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots" (2008), but those games are exclusively for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 respectively. I'm not sure I want to buy it just for that game...

The music of MGS2, 3 and 4 were composed by Harry Gregson-Williams and Norihiko Hibino. And the music is really very good. Very cinematic and thrilling.
Marillion's intro in "The Invisible Man" somehow reminds me of Metal Gear Solid's music.

Anyway, that's that Nicky.

Yeah, I'll do that one day, maybe when I come out of my present back-to-70's-hard-rock-classics period. But I need to find enough time (and incidentally money)  :P

I don't know whether one can call it a "compliment" as such, but iac both you and I have one, Bupsie. The difference, and that's what I was referring to, is that yours is French and mine English - if that makes any sense  :D
