RPWL - The RPWL Experience

I was at Malmö Stadsbibliotek to try out some cd's that I don't have myself. Among the tested cd's were the following. You're very welcome to comment.

Nine Inch Nails:  Ghosts I-IV

You have to imagine the N's the other way around. I only listened to the first 3-4 pieces. They were rather slow, no real melody, more atmospheres and moods. Ghosts is basically Trent Reznor with friends. I noticed that Adrian Belew was in the mix here and there, but I didnt stay long enuff to check him out. My short listen didnt convince me (yet) to get the album.

Ministry:  The Last Sucker

A spoof of George W. Kinda NIN meets Megadeth. Some great, uncanny rhythms, but not much happening.

At The Gates:  Slaughter Of The Soul

Gothenburg Rock, ATG are actually considered by many to be the progenitors of this genre. Also rather regular metal tmm. I'm not a big fan of GR, my fave band in this genre being Dark Tranqillity, I much prefer the Stockholm groups Opeth, Seventh Wonder, Pain of Salvation, and Scar Symmetry (the latter a bit outside of Stockholm).

Black Sabbath:  Heaven And Hell

The first BS album with Dio. I was never a big fan of Sabbath, but with Ozzy there was/is an edge. With Dio, they seem to have become rather regular metal, kinda like Priest and Maiden.

Blue Öyster Cult:  Some Enchanted Evening

A group from New York. I had heard the name several times, that's why I tested them now. This album from 1978 iac sounded like pretty regular rock to me, nothin special.

Journey:  Escape

At the better end of classic rock, but for me, time has run from this type of music, and as I don't have any memories connected to this album, it's not one I'd consider getting .

So there was none of this that really gripped me  :(

Nice vivid lyrics tho:

"Some will win
Some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues"

Journey:  Don't Stop Believing

Sure you can

I don't know Ghost but two albums that are worth the attention are Fragile and Year Zero.
Both extremely good but...

only if you like Industrial Metal.

If not, exit's on the left.  ;D

Mad, I stil cannot say that I like the album as a whole, but this track is really stunning! What a great melodic guitarsolo! *horns*

EDIT: Ten Plagues is also quite okay... ;)

Wow, he's amazing. His playing is totally out of this world. :o I'm now playing Jato Unit and he's clearly got a lot of talent for heavy riffing and shredding! I like! *horns*  I think I'll have to get his album asap.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Right, Tom. You wouldnt think so from seeing him and hearing him talk, but his guitar playing is formidable, frightening at times. And Jeff and Warrel sure create some uncanny music in Nevermore. Fortunately Nevermore are slowly gaining currency in the Room - roomies deserve'm  *horns*  :)

NP  Angra:  Rebirth   *horns*

A Brazilian group, similar to Symphony X, with some Brazilian flavor and folklore. Any fan of SyX should check'm out. Rebirth is supposed to be one of their best albums.

If any of you guys are suprised by hearing Brazil mentioned as a prog metal country, then be no longer. To my mind, Brazil is at par with Poland in this respect. Angra, Symbols, Shaaman, Sepultura, Soulfly, and Cavalera Conspiracy have made their mark in the international metal community.

I was quite suprised a year or so back when I got around to ripping some Angra, there's a fair bit of prog in there. *horns*  About 10 years ago ('Fireworks' was first contact for me) I'd got them pegged as plain metal. Clearly I'm an *rse :-[  Class band. 8)
