BP  Arena:  SFALC

Very enjoyable  *horns*

So thanks to you, Paxi, from me too  :)

I do, however, miss Rob in the mix. John Carson is a good singer, but somewhat bland, I find. I miss the bite and snarl (not growl) of Rob  ;D  8)

Never got around to listening properly to this album before now, so it sounds almost like new to me. My way to Arena was thru Kino, which I enjoyed, and then I got The Visitor, which I enjoyed even more, and then there were Contagion and Pepper, which I enjoy supremely  *horns*

NP Jeff Loomis:  Jato Unit  (on repeat)

Whew - breathtaking  *horns*

Have you guys at all listened to this ?  It's some of the most original guitar playing I'v ever come across. Comon, guys, are we proggies or not ? Ya know, there's more prog than just Arena and Marillion (the latter group I wouldnt even characterise as prog, as you know, but some of you guys might disagree on that)  ;)

Tom, at least you oughtta go here.

Jeff claims that his nb 1 teacher was Jason Becker. One can actually hear that here, altho Jeff sure has pushed the envelope a lot further  8)

I know I'm somewhat provocative, guys, but sometimes you do seem like a bevy of aunties. And yes, Paxi, I'm difficult again - and ya know what: I don't care, I'v gotten kinda used to it. So, just come at me, guys, ya know that you'l get it back again  :P

Kim Wilde - Kids in America

I loved Kim's first album. Too bad it's almost impossible to find nowadays at a reasonable price  :P If somebody has an adress, I take it !

I saw her live in 1983, I think, and surprinsingly it was a hell of a gig  *horns* The musicians were very good and Kim, well, I don't think there was a single male in the audience that was not in love with her ...

Great memories  8)

;D you sob, Jonesey.

Gotta fix sumthin more suuuuutle for you now :P

NP  Opeth:  Deliverance   (on repeat)  *horns*

This one actually fooled me in the beginning. It starts out very heavy and growly and goes on like that for a while. That made me go over to more accessible stuff like Damnation (the most acoustic Opeth album despite the name). Now that I'v given Deliverance some spins, I can enjoy all the fine nuances in the first two songs. The last five minutes of the title piece is like a longdrawn or**** - whew.

Then we go over into PT-mode - well, not so surprising, as SW was fifth man on this album - and the last, sixth song has a circus-like mood, of curse (sic) ala Opeth.

Quite a varied album, it turns out.

What do you guys think about it ?

And what do you mean by "religious"?

I hardly need to answer that one, Paxi. Just take a look at their album titles: Damnation, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries; and further, MÅ sings about faith, repentence, eternity, visions  etc. If there's anyone around who takes religious matters philosophically, he's your man.

Do lyrics have to be anti-Christian to be wrong?

They can of course be wrong in other ways, like racist, sexist (like running down (symbolically this time) gays), promoting cheese, etc.

But if I experience a group as deliberately anti-Christian, like Slayer, I simply avoid'm. Not that I would run a campaign against'm - they of course have their right to free expression - it's just not my cup'o'coffee, as Mr. Mad would put it.

Quote
And what exactly is anti-Christian?

That's of course very subjective, Paxi. I can probably tolerate more than your typical Bible Belt Baptist preacher man  ;)

NP  Aghora:  Formless   *horns*

It's beyond me that in a forum where there are at least ten active members who really have been around and tackled groups like DT, Opeth and Nevermore, I'm the only person who knows Aghora, one of the absolutely most exciting prog metal groups in our time. OK, this music requires courage, endurance, guts, balls, or whatever you wanna call it, but there is some of that here in the Room  ;)

Aghora are based in Florida, and arose in the slipstream of the great Cynic. It's the first group I'v heard that combines the Hindu traditions with top-league metal musicianship. Surprisingly, they have female singers on their two albums (Danishta Rivero on the first, self-titled, and Diana Serra on the second, Formless), but this just adds to their multi-dimensionality.

Aghora's leader, Santiago Dobles, plays a guitar that knocks ya flat on the floor.

One can discuss whether this stuff is coherent. After 20+ spins, I'd proffer a careful Yes !

Recommended to adventurous heavy proggies  ;)

You're not alone, Nicky.  ;)
I know them too. In fact i even have their first album which is rather good i'd say.
The reason why i never have mentioned them is because the last time i actually played it...is quite some time ago.  :-\
Don't have their last album, Formless. Wonder if it's any good?

The music is okay but i couldn't get use to the female vocals.

Yeah, was surprising, wasnt it ? You'd expect more an Åkerfeldt type singer with that sorta music.

Well, I'v gotten used to Santiago's ladies now, and I find their singing quite beautiful.

But the whole thing is a challenge to our preconceived notions, aint it ?

And aint that what prog's really about ?

I thought his teeth were made of steel  ;D

Yeah, dunno, Måd. Just googled it. Looks like it's sumthin Mike Å made up, but there was no explanation on the first three google pages. (I hope you don't expect me to go thru all google pages.)

But yeah, shows once again Mike's originality  *horns*
