NP  Opeth:  Still Life

I'm backtracking Opeth. I'm actually not all that familiar with their pre-Damnation albums. Ghost Reveries gripped me seriously when it came out, and recently Watershed struck point-blank.

Once one's that hooked onto a group, they can pretty much get away with anything. Iac I'm hearing lots'o wonderful stuff in their earlier albums.

Just to make it clear:  Mikael Å is genius, but Opeth is by no means Mikael with backing; the other guys sure cut it bigtime  *horns*

Recently I listened to Damnation and Blackwater Park, and I really like those two albums! Maybe I even prefer Blackwater Park.
I'm slowly starting to like Opeth. Still not sure about the lyrics though...

Paxi, apart from the backward Satan reference in Watershed - if it really is what the rumor claims, I still havent found a definitive proof  ;) - I havent noticed anything about Opeth that disturbs my Christian sensibilities. If I understood Keith correctly, he hadnt either.

One could characterise Mikael's lyrics as variously "pagan", "seeking", and I would even say, at times "religious", but I can now state with a high degree of certainty that they're not "anti-Christian".

I think I even remember that somewhere in the material that Keith treated us with, Mikael said that he had no intent of conveying any anti-Christian sentiment.

So I no longer have any qualms about Opeth in this respect.

Not everybody places the limits at the same places. I mean, it's ok that you think it's ok. ;) But still this is subjective. Perhaps I notice something you wouldn't notice, or maybe you think something isn't bad, while I think it is. Of course a lot of this has to do with a feeling towards it, but these feelings should be based on objective facts. So, I wasn't really looking for an explanation of feelings, but arguments based on facts. But since you didn't find one, I guess I have to look for myself. There's no smoke without fire, that's why I'm very reluctant on bands like these, you know. When I find time, I will delve deeper into the lyrics of Opeth. I'll keep you informed. ;)

Do lyrics have to be anti-Christian to be wrong? And what exactly is anti-Christian?
And what do you mean by "religious"? In the Dark Ages, people where very religious, but that didn't have much to do with the Christian faith. Sorcery for instance. There were many rituals back then. And there still are now. Even within Christian circles. And of course not all rituals are good. Same goes with religious themes. Not every religious theme is ok. To throw a cliché in the mix: Jesus and the devil are both religious figures. And "a god" is a religious theme. And "church" is a religious theme. So what kind of themes are you referring to?
Furthermore, when you say that Mikael's lyrics are "pagan", alarm bells are ringing in my Christian ears. ;)

Ok, this is gonna sound strange but I don't know how to put it in another way...
I believe in Mikael's good will and sincerity. And when I see interviews with him, I can only say that he must be a wonderful person. He's intelligent, friendly and funny. And Mikael and Opeth are indeed very much different from most Black Metal bands. So when you say that he has stated that he has no intent of spreading anti-Christian sentiment, I'm not surprised.
But I also believe in the sincerity of my pastor. Still that doesn't make me a blind follower. And sometimes my pastor says things of which I think "Errmm... ok?". My pastor can be wrong sometimes. Like all of us. I'm sure you know that aswell. As a Christian, we have to be on our guard at all times, right? "Trust in no one" springs to mind. ;) But I'd like to add (for you and me) on matters like these, spiritual matters, we should trust no one (not even pastors) except God and the Bible. They give us insight and guidance in the spiritual like noone else can.

I have to say thanks to the recent polls on this board I 'discovered' Arena again. I listened to 'Songs' and 'Pride' last night, and now I felt the need to play Contagion.

Thanks Paco! :)

After playing a lot of Arena-music it is time for something heavy...

Yes, I find music in there. I can't believe you actually said that! :o I didn't find poetry and/or philosophy, but I don't look for that when I'm listening to Meshuggah. To be honest I rarely look for poetry of philosphy in music anyway. Sure it's a great thing when a song has the most amazing lyrics you'll ever find (or can relate to) but when it has not, I don't think I would listen to it any less.

Yes, it's amazing! But I have to admit that I like Frost*'s EIMA a lot more! ;D
"Frost*'s" that looks funny.

Now listening to Vangelis - Blade Runner, very entrancing. I can sit half an hour with my mouth half open and my eyes half shut, just listening to this landscapes. A trance indeed.
