Excellent CD methinks.  ;D
The first encounter with Glass Hammer was when i bought Chronometree which i immediately liked but i was amazed by Lex Rex and Shadowlands. Two great albums indeed.
Culture Of Ascent certainly belongs in that list of great Glass Hammer albums. Try listen to the two epics. Especially Ember Without Name is a jewel.

I'm certainly getting into it the more I play it.  I think part of the problem initially was the relatively pedestrian 'South Side of the Sky' cover for an opener combined with a rather lacklustre sound quality which seems to suck the life out of the music - at least to my ears.  Ember is certainly a stand-out track, I agree, and the album is definitely starting to register more after a few plays.  Could be one of those slow-burners that sees me suddenly going mad and buying their whole catalogue.  :D

The other part of the problem was that Glass Hammer turned up in the same package as the mighty Simon Says 'Tardigrade' - an officially recognised progasm which puts most stuff in the shade.  ;D

Indeedy.  8)  I'd also single out 'Halfway to Somewhere' as my favourite from the later years.

Same here it is such a bonus that they are supporting Spocks Beard.

SB Live

...and following the Steve Hackett link from my last entry brings me to:
Steve Hackett - Live Archive CD5: 70s.  This is full-on Hackett, whereas Tokyo Tapes is really Hackett plus others - although not at all poorer for it.

I've no idea how many times I've seen Steve Hackett, he could always be relied upon to come around more frequently than Genesis and played normal sized theatres into the bargain.  These archive release capture the sheer excellence of his stage show back then - pieces such as Steppes, Clocks and Tower Struck Down were every bit as much live classics as the comparable Genesis tunes.

Rock on, Ubermeister Stefanovitch Von Hackenschmidt  *horns*

NP   Brian May:  Back To The Light

Being a big Queen fan thru the ages, I just had to get this album.

What a gem !!!  And I'v only just started listening to it. The title song is a real killer, a true May piece, well thought thru and perfectly recorded and produced.

Freddie was The Voice, but I always liked Brian's music best. He was one of my great heros, and he has given me sooo much joi de vivre (just tryin to impress Bupsie here), also at times when I really missed it  :'( => :)

Céline Dion does all the singing on this album - no, just foolin, Steve  ;D   Brian himself does most of the singing, and here and there some of his friends chi(r)p in. Admittedly Brian doesnt have anything near the terrific vocal powers that Freddie had, but his voice is expressive, warm and genuine.

And there's of course some awesome guitar playing.

This album was a very personal offering by Brian. He writes a note about it in the cd booklet. He spent years preparing it, and released it in 1992. Of course, it's dedicated to Freddie (and to Brian's deceased father Harold, and Alfred Dobson (dunno)).

So guys, if you like songs like Brighton Rock (which totally swept me away in the mid-70's), Father To Son, and The Prophet's song, there's more of this wonderful stuff on Back To The Light.

Interesting (Wikipedia - Brian May):

"Brian has stated in interviews that he suffered from depression in the late 1980s, even to the point of contemplating suicide, and that drug use would have worsened any problems he faced."
