Knight Area - Under a New Sign

How does it sound, Steve ? I was thinking of trying them.

Magenta - Metamorphosis.

Probably not quite as good as "Seven" but this CD is a real grower, reveals something new everytime I listen to it.

It's on its way to my house so I should be able to check it soon.

NP Marillion - Estonia (on Marbles Live, which is a GREAT album  *horns*)

I like Knight Area.  Not my favourite band, but certainly very nice.  I'm not much good at categorising bands, but the 2 CDs I've got are very definitely prog   *horns*

Keyboards sound very Gabriel-era Genesis, but the overall music doesn't.  More at the traditional end of the prog market than the Dream Theater Prog Metal end.  Well worth checking out.

NP: A.C.T Silence.  Indeed a good album, as was suggested by the good folk of this forum.  Some parts sound very much like a prog 10cc which is certainly different!

Next up: The F2 Music sampler from progrock.co.uk, featuring Magenta, Chimpan A, Credo & Ezra.

I think you can label them as 'neo-progressive symphonic rock' or something like that :P. But labeling them is a waste of your time. You'd better give them a listen right now Bupie!

I pre-ordered it from amazon.co.uk but it went straight to 'unavailable' when released so I need to pick up a copy from elsewhere, methinks.  I currently own no Magenta CDs whatsoever, but I'm listening to the 5 tracks on the F2 Music free sampler at the moment - they're completely awesome.  *horns*  I must get myself sorted in the Magenta department!  :)

Yes, agreed completely.  I'm also particularly fond of the 'Smoke' and 'Mirrors' pair that you can get from the website.  Really, really good performances of the songs included.

There's a '.' too much there, Mad. (And a band/group are plural.)  ;)

Well, that depends. I haven't got access to my bookshelf, and the free internet is not something I trust implicitly, but I think in general that a band is plural  ;) in the UK and singular in the US.

Anyway, I found this thing that I feel shed some sensible light on the matter, and seemingly confirms my suspicions:

1. Grammar: Traditional Rules, Word Order, Agreement, and Case

ยง 20. collective noun
Some nouns, like committee, clergy, enemy, group, family, and team, refer to a group but are singular in form. These nouns are called collective nouns. In American usage, a collective noun takes a singular verb when it refers to the collection considered as a whole, as in The family was united on this question or The enemy is suing for peace. It takes a plural verb when it refers to the members of the group considered as individuals, as in My family are always fighting among themselves or The enemy were showing up in groups of three or four to turn in their weapons. In British usage, collective nouns are more often treated as plurals: The government have not announced a new policy. The team are playing in the test matches next week.     1
Be careful not to treat a collective noun as both singular and plural in the same construction. Thus you should say The family is determined to press its (not their) claim.     2
Collective nouns always refer to living creatures. Similar inanimate nouns, such as furniture and luggage, differ in that they cannot be counted individually. That is why you cannot buy a furniture or a luggage. These nouns are usually called mass nouns or noncount nouns. They always take a singular verb: The bedroom furniture was on sale.

Well, that depends.

Yeah, I'v also seen band/group treated as singular. But for "rock band/group" the most common form by far is plural, and this also refers to the members as individuals, in contrast to a group of e.g. soldiers.

It seems to me that the plural form is pretty much established now.

NP  DT:  Octavarium  (on repeat)

A terrific album  *horns*

I find all the songs on it great, and I consider the track Octavarium by all means epic.

This plural/singular thing is just another tool to enhance the power of language, written or speechical. ;D If you are conscious about this, you can enhance the sense of a unit by saying "Arena is playing live next month", whereas I guess it is a recognition of the individual members to say "Arena are playing live next month". It might be a fashion thing. For a while, a romantic vision of the collective has been popular, while the respect and acknowledgement of the individual, even if part of a group, are modern notions.

But any way, I'd support any conscious choice.

Now playing with the thought of dinner...

I agree, even on the dinner deliberations  ;D
