If you give her a kiss and tell her she's the most wonderful woman on earth, she'll let you do anythin. "Woman, thy name is vanity!"

Already tried : this definitively doesn't work with her  ;D

:D OK, Nicky, I admit this one is very funny (but it is still a good song IMHO)

NP Madness - It must be Love ... to prove that it takes only a few words to express the essence (and the irrationality) of love  ::)

Yeah, French women are too independent   ;D

What to do? Hm, .....  OK, tell her that you've become a Muslim. That automatically creates a hierarchy within the family. (Cap, you didn't see this.)   ::)

Yeah, Spock's Beard, one of the real great bands  :)

NP  Guy Manning: Night Voices  (on MySpace)

Beautiful, melodious, deep music.

Thanks for the tip, CC. (This is an example of music that I quite well could have missed out on, were it not for the Room.)  :)

From their 2007 album. It sounds very ok.
Nice music.
All prog metal fans should check it out!

;D Tom. I hope you're nicer than Clive's BM. What actually made you choose this as your alias? Did you know at that time how mean and evil the real BM was?

But I can follow you in that the song is a killer.

Nicky.

I basically chose this as my alias because it just was my favourite Arena-song at the time! I also liked the dark, sinister mood the song has.

First post of the day! (hurray...)

At the moment I'm trying Paradox Hotel again (The Flower Kings).
I like the intro (with the table tennis sounds) and the first song is ok too (Monsters And Men), although a bit too much if you'd ask me. They really want to sound like the 70s...

The rest of the cd is totally boring to me, but maybe I get a revelation this time.
Track three is playing now. Piano/vocal. Sounds ok too.

Still playing:
The Flower Kings - Paradox Hotel

I've popped in the second disc and it's nice music, but it doesn't have that magic, or that "something" that I want.
The funny thing is that I like almost everything related to Roine Stolt (Transatlantic, Kaipa, The Tangent) and I think he can handle his guitar quite well and he is a very emotional singer.
I like his guitarplaying and his voice very much, but The Flower Kings...

There are no stand out tracks and it doesn't grab me at all.
They are desperately trying to sound like a 70s progressive band with every cliché that has to do with it.
Maybe a bit more Power instead of Flower would have done the trick... (The Power Kings, hehehe)
Maybe Paradox Hotel is just a very bad album, perhaps some of you can give me suggestions for a specific cd.

This album cost me 10 euros, so it isn't that much of a disaster, but these are moments that I wished I had tried it before I bought it.
Sorry if that isn't what you want to hear...

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put Dream Theater's Octavarium in my disc player, 'cos my ears are aching from The Flower Kings.
By the way, I'm glad that I downloaded Octavarium before I bought it, because now I own almost every DT release. Yes I buy cds too, take a look at my listenings profile.

I just had the feeling that I should tell you all this, since there's so much going on about this issue.

Paco, I have Paradox Hotel and Unfold The Future, I've played them a couple of times, and at this point they haven't gripped me either. I can recognise your characterisation.

On the other hand, pretty much everything DT have put out from Words And Images on is great, both music and lyrics.

NP  Pain Of Salvation:  The Perfect Element  (Part I)  (on repeat)

Not as astounding as Scarsick, but very special and interesting, rocks well now and then, certainly a classic prog album.

Toto - Wings of time (Kingdom of Desire)

Dream Theater - Never Enough

On repeat.
Because I can't get enough of this song.

Come on Nicky, this album is better than Systematic Chaos. Be serious man.
Especially lyrically.
The lyrics touch me.

Paco, Octavarium is awesome, but SC is superawesome   :)

NP  Sieges Even:  A Sense Of Change  (on repeat)  (also a kinda SC)

Hm, took a lot of spins, but now I'm getting into it. I must say, SE are really among the best. Highly original, but certainly also melodious and everything else too. Impressive!

They've had four singers - guess the Holzwarth bros are toughies - all of them topnotch. Jogi Kaiser is the singer on A Sense. (Why are there so many German musicians called Jogi or Yogi - sons of flower power parents?)

No way out now: I simply have to get their entire catalog. Hey, Uncle Rocky, where are you?

Quote from: Nicky007 on Mon, 2007-09-24, 20:41:22(Why are there so many German musicians called Jogi or Yogi - sons of flower power parents?)

That reminds me of RPWL. World Through My Eyes is musically brilliant, but when I take a closer look at the lyrics, I must admit that the lyrics are very Hindu...
"I become part of the river once again."
"Shiva calls your name, why don't you sleep."
Add Yogi Lang's name to it and there you have it.

Maybe something to discuss about.

Pain Of Salvation - Scarsick - 04 - America

At summers End they played (at least) the first 5 tracks off Scarsick, they were fantastic!

And the lyrics?

OK, Paco, I'll check up on them. I always find DT's lyrics very inspiring.

Great pic, John. Did you take it yourself? One really gets an experience of three great musicians who take their art very seriously.

Just saw some stuff about Burma. I hope that they can get a democratic process going there at last.

John Petrucci - Glasgow Kiss

This song and the LP Suspended Animation are so good that I fail to understand all the bashing they received  ???

Definitively a must-get album for you Nicky and Maddox (plus many other roomies)  ;)

As we talked about earlier in the Room, Bupie, there are lots of dumbasses that try to attract attention by running down music, particularly music that appeals to more serious listeners. The more famous the group, the stupider the attacks.

The absolute peak of stupidity is the on/off statement about DT's albums; in fact, it's so tasteless that I'm never ever gonna mention it again in the Room (and hopefully never see it either here).

I have developed an instinct that immediately tells me whether a critique is serious or not.

Not that I mind negative criticism. But the absolute minimum for a critique of an album must be:

- Five thorough listens
- A reasonable effort to understand the lyrics
- Familiarity with several other albums of the group
- No hidden agendas, e.g. promoting some other group, hating the guts of the musicians, national biases

I'm listening to Los Endos by Genesis.

In a public room at school, with the speakers on. ;D

Some nice responses and some less nice responses, but it's cool.
