Thanks, Mad. I'm definitely gonna get some Slayer stuff. (The Roskilde album is my friend's.)

I'm also intent on hearing some more Testament.

Man, so much great music around, it's amazing  :o

Yes, and one that you don't owe any money to into the bargain! ;D

After spending a year or three concentrating mainly on newer music, I'm currently heading in the opposite direction and doing some serious ripping of older stuff that I haven't heard in ages.  I've lost count of the amazing rediscoveries I've had since Christmas.  Alice Cooper, Bad English, Bad Company, Judas Priest, Metallica, Diamond Head, etc, etc.

There's a lot of heavier stuff in there, true, but I don't think that's intentional. It's just that I've given priority to ripping the more proggy stuff over the last few years and so the heavier stuff is only now getting it's turn...

You could have seen them live along with Judas Priest and Megadeth a few weeks ago in Denmark, Nicky. I guess it could have been to your taste ...

Megadeth is another band that I have never listened to. I dislike Metallica so much (the music, I mean) that I never dared to try bands in a supposed thrashier vein (i.e. Slayer or Megadeth). Maybe I am missing something  ::) I think Judas Priest had a thrash period too ?

About the Priest, Steve (and others roomies), what do you think of the Live Meltdown album ? I read a few rave critics despite Rob Halford's absence.

NP Pendragon - Pure

Track 1 : Indigo  Finally, I see a great Arena influence in this track (at least in its first part) : could have been on The Visitor or Contagion

Unfortunately I've not heard either of the two live albums from the Tim 'Ripper' Owens period.  I don't see why there should be anything wrong with them, I hasten to add, I've just not gotten around to buying them.  By coincidence, I almost played 'Demolition' over the weekend - might give it a spin later today.

Personally I prefer Sad Wings/Sin After Sin/Stained Class/Killing Machine to the later stuff. I felt they lost a little something when they went on to the more formulaic metal later in their career.  Nothing wrong with the latter, of course, and I can't deny they helped to define the genre, but the four albums I mentioned will always be the 'special' ones to me.  It's that 'growing up with them' thing again. 8)

I've heard Priest with Ripper doing Painkiller a while back.
Man that sounded bloody awful.  :o
The original is way better.  8)

As for Megadeth: It has similarities with Metallica but personally i think Megadeth is better.
Especially albums like Rust In Peace, Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia are great. After that they became a bit soft, and Mustaine had an arm injury but with The System Has Failed and  United Abominations they returned to their form.
Cause of Injury: Lack of Adhesive Ducks.

;) Thanks for the tips, Mad (and Steve). Still, would you say that Megadeth is significantly less agressive than Slayer or is it more or less the same kind of musical style ?

Judas Priest - Demolition (Tim 'Ripper' Owens era)

Edit: First time I've played this one for years and, typically, I'd forgotten how good it is.  Not really 'traditional' Priest because the vocals change the overall sound significantly, but I love it.  At the risk of upsetting the JP purists, I prefer it to some of the later Priest albums with the mighty Halford.

Dunno yet, Bups. The only groups in that broccolibowl that have really gripped me so far are Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Testament. And even from them it's a big jump to advanced progmetal groups like Queensrÿche and Nevermore (the metal groups in my prog pantheon). But I must admit that it's a long time since I'v heard Megadeth, and I'v only heard Priest sparsely, so there's a lot of exploration for me to be done. That's why I like to get tips from you guys about these groups  ;)

But to be honest with you, Bups, if you really wanna hear the crëme della creme of metal, then you gotta work your way into Queensrÿche and Nevermore  *horns* ;) ;)

That's of course just an opinion, but it's a passionate one  ;D
